I’d love some feedback on a Croatia road trip for late June 2026. We’ll be travelling as a multigenerational family:

  • Grandma in her 70s

  • Two adults in our 40s

  • Two kids (around 10)

Interests:

  • Kids: swimming, beaches, water parks

  • Adults: old towns, natural scenery, good food & wine

This is the middle portion of a 5-week Europe trip from Australia (Amsterdam beforehand, Germany afterwards). We have 13 nights in Croatia.

We’ve done several European road trips before and are comfortable driving. We like to do something every day (we don’t really do “rest days” unless someone is sick), but we stay flexible with weather and energy levels.

I’ve chosen four bases based on interests, drive times, and accommodation that suits our needs. I have a loose daily plan that can easily be shuffled.

Main questions:

  1. Is it reasonable to stay in Cavtat and commute into Dubrovnik for 1–2 days?

  2. I’m tempted to add one more night on the Makarska Riviera by cutting one night from either Šibenik or Cavtat. Thoughts?

Overview Itinerary (13 nights)

  • Fly into Split, pick up car

  • Šibenik – 4 nights

  • Tučepi (Makarska Riviera) – 2 nights

  • Korčula – 4 nights

  • Cavtat – 3 nights

  • Fly out of Dubrovnik

Detailed Plan

Day 1: Arrive Split → drive to Šibenik (sleep in Šibenik 4 nights)
Day 2: Krka National Park
Day 3: Day trip to Zadar
Day 4: Aquapark Dalmatia + beach
Day 5: Drive south, stop in Split (sleep in Tučepi 2 nights)
Day 6: Biokovo Skywalk + beach
Day 7: Drive to Korčula (via ferry) + beach (sleep in Korcula 4 nights)
Day 8: Korčula Old Town + Pošip winery
Day 9: Pupnatska Luka Beach
Day 10: Island hopping from Korčula
Day 11: Drive south, stop in Ston (sleep in Cavtat 3 nights)
Day 12: Dubrovnik Old Town & city walls
Day 13: Lokrum Island or Mount Srđ
Day 14: Fly out of Dubrovnik

Any feedback, especially around pace, base choices, or where you’d steal/add a night, would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Hi! 😊

First, to answer your questions: yes, it’s totally fine to stay in Cavtat and visit Dubrovnik from there. Cavtat is only about 30 minutes from Dubrovnik Old Town and is much calmer and less crowded. You’ll probably really appreciate having a peaceful place to return to after exploring the Old Town. One thing to keep in mind is that parking near the Old Town is very limited and extremely expensive, so I’d recommend using the local bus, Uber, or a water taxi instead of driving your own car.

Secondly, I’d definitely try to add a night on the Makarska Riviera. If you can’t take that night from Šibenik since it seems fully planned, you could take it from Korčula instead. Tučepi has absolutely gorgeous beaches, and once you see them, you’ll wish you had a whole week there! If you use those days mainly for swimming and water sports, Korčula can still work well in 3 days / 2 nights, just without beach time.

Overall, the rest of your plan sounds really good. Personally, I’d choose Mount Srđ over Lokrum. Lokrum is quite expensive and, in my opinion, a bit underwhelming if you’re not planning to swim. Since you’ll have better beaches at other stops anyway, it’s not really a must. Mount Srđ, on the other hand, offers some of the best views in Croatia and for about the price of Lokrum tickets, you could all enjoy a lunch or dinner at Panorama instead. Plus you can do it with your own car!
