ONE DAY IN OSIJEK, CROATIA: EXPLORE THIS SLAVONIAN GEM

If you’re visiting the eastern region of Croatia anytime soon, Osijek is the biggest town you’ll likely stay in. Here’s how to spend the perfect one day in Osijek!

Although Slavonia isn’t as popular as the coast, it’s still absolutely lovely and worth visiting. As a local who was born and spent 23 years in Osijek, I’ll show you the best things to do to make the most of your time in this beautiful town. Keep reading to find out how to spend the perfect day in Osijek from a local!

WHERE IS OSIJEK?

Osijek is located in eastern Croatia, near the border with Serbia and Hungary. It is the largest city in the region of Slavonia, and fourth largest in the country. Osijek is situated along the right bank of the Drava River, which is one of the most prominent symbols of the town.

Osijek is approximately 280 kilometers (about 174 miles) east of Zagreb and they’re well connected. That means that you can reach it easily by car or by bus. Osijek can be a good destination for a day trip, but you can also spend 3-4 days exploring the town and the surrounding region.

WHY VISIT OSIJEK?

There are many reasons why you should visit Osijek, even if it’s just for a day. Osijek is a charming and cozy Croatian city which will show you a whole different side of Croatia. There are no huge concrete buildings, hordes of people, or insane traffic jams in Osijek. Here you’ll experience a relaxing and beautiful town full of stunning nature and lovely, friendly people.

BEAUTIFUL HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE

Osijek has several stunning historical landmarks worth checking out, which are totally unique to everything else found in Croatia.

Firstly, there’s Osijek’s old town, Tvrda. Tvrda is a well-preserved Baroque fortress with cobbled streets, historic buildings, museums, and cafes. It was built between the 17th and 18th centuries and for years it was the administrative and military center of the city. Today it’s the cultural and social hub of Osijek. It very popular area for both tourists and locals, with plenty of restaurants, cafes, bars, and galleries.

Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul is another breathtaking landmark in the city. You’ll find it in the city centre, right next to Ante Starcevic Square. It’s a neo-Gothic cathedral with a stunning spire and intricate details, and it’s definitely one of Osijek’s architectural highlights.

GREEN SPACES AND NATURE

Osijek is one of, if not the greenest city in Croatia. It’s has incredible nature in and outside the city centre. There are over 17 parks in Osijek, so visiting in summer or autumn is especially charming.

The symbol of the city is its river, Drava. The town is located along the river, offering one of the prettiest riverside walkways in the country. Besides Drava, there’s also Kopacki Rit Nature Park. It’s a wetland area just outside Osijek, ideal for birdwatching and outdoor activities.

FOOD AND WINE CULTURE

Osijek (Slavonia region in general) has incredible cuisine. Some of the most popular hearty Slavonian dishes are kulen (spicy sausage), cobanac (a traditional stew), and fis paprikas (spicy fish stew). If you’re visiting Slavonia, make sure you try at least some of these dishes.

Additionally, the surrounding Slavonia region makes excellent wines, so you can try great wines in Osijek, as well as some really strong rakija (a traditional Balkan spirit).

AFFORDABLE AND LESS CROWDED

Slavonia and Osijek are far from the popularity of other Croatian towns such as those on the coast. Osijek is very popular among Croatians because it offers a great quality of life, and many people love living there, but it’s still not very well-known or widely visited by tourists. However, that doesn’t mean that they’re less worthy of a visit. The fact that they’re less popular will give you an advantage of experiencing the city with barely any crowds.

The charm of Osijek is that it offers a more relaxed, authentic experience than some other touristy places. It’s also more affordable, with cheaper accommodation and more appropriate restaurant prices.

CLOSE TO OTHER EASTERN CROATIAN LOCATIONS

Osijek is the centre of eastern Croatia, and it’s close to several other interesting destinations such as Vukovar, Ilok, Djakovo, and the Baranja region which is famous for incredible history, gastronomy, and wine.

WHERE TO STAY IN OSIJEK?

Osijek has a few great hotels you could book for your stay. If you prefer an apartment, there are several of them available on Booking.com or AirBnB, so you won’t have any problems finding accommodation.

HOTEL OSIJEK

Hotel Osijek is the most popular hotel in Osijek, and it’s situated right in the city centre. It’s become somewhat of a landmark of Osijek, and everyone knows it. Any destination in Osijek will be at most a 20-minute walk from your hotel. The hotel is modern and has its own restaurant, with another restaurant and a sweet shop adjacent to the hotel. HOTEL MATERRA

Hotel Materra is the most luxurious accommodation you can get in Osijek, and if you’re visiting for a relaxing weekend, this place is perfect for you. It’s around 15 kilometres from Osijek, situated in nature without any possible distractions. The hotel is stunning, with modern, breathtaking rooms and amenities, and a mouthwatering restaurant. As it’s out of town, you’ll need a car to get to Osijek, so keep that in mind. Check out the hotel here!

WHAT TO DO IN ONE DAY IN OSIJEK

HAVE A COFFEE IN THE MORNING

Start your day with a coffee. Coffee culture is very prominent in Osijek, just like the rest of Croatia. There are several places where you can stop for a coffee, but I would highly recommend stopping by at The Kavana, which is right next to the Cathedral, or at one of the cafes on Promenada, where you’ll get amazing views of the river Drava.

BIKE OR WALK DOWN OSIJEK’S PROMENADA

There are two main social centers in Osijek, and Promenada is definitely one of them. This riverside walkway offers possibly the best views in Osijek, and it’s the perfect place for relaxing or light recreation. There are several different restaurants and cafes along the promenade, so you can sit down and relax if you’re tired of walking.

I would highly recommend using this walkway for walking or biking from the city centre all the way to Tvrda. It’s a stunning walk, but an even more fun bike ride. You can rent a city bike (NextBike) right across the cathedral and for 0,66 cents cycle from the city centre to Tvrda.

EXPLORE TVRDA

Tvrda is Osijek’s old town and it’s a must visit if you’re in the city. Tvrda was built between the 17th and 18th centuries during the time of the Habsburg Empire. It was originally designed as a military and administrative centre, but today it’s a civilian district and one of the more social spaces in the city.

Locals love going visiting Tvda for a coffee, drinks, or a good meal, but also for a great night out. If you want to experience Osijek’s nightlife, Tvrda is the place to go. If that’s not your thing, there are various museums and galleries you can visit during the day instead!

WALK DOWN EUROPSKA AVENIJA

If you’re a fan of charming streets, Europska Avenija is the one for you. This street is one of Osijek’s most notable streets, with huge historical and architectural significance for the city. It runs through the heart of the city, and it connects the city center to nearby neighborhoods.

It’s mostly known for its impressive row of Art Nouveau buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The buildings feature characteristic details such as ornate facades, decorative motifs, wrought-iron balconies, and colorful tiles. These buildings give the street its distinct, historic charm and are a great backdrop for some lovely photos. Walking down this street will surely be one of the more visually appealing activities in Osijek!

WALK OVER THE OSIJEK PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

The Osijek Pedestrian Bridge is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, going over the Drava River and connecting the city center with the green spaces and Osijek Zoo on the opposite bank.

Its official name is the Pedestrian Bridge over the Drava, and it is loved for its beautiful design, scenic views, and the way it lights up beautifully in the evening.

The bridge spans about 210 meters and it’s a relatively easy and accessible walk across the river. The pedestrian bridge is completely free and I would highly recommend going over it for some of the most stunning views of Osijek.

VISIT THE ZOO

Osijek has a ZOO, which can be an interesting activity if you’re visiting with children. The ZOO is not huge, but still enough to see some of the more interesting animals. It has got over 600 animals and it gets over 100.000 visitors each year. The entrance ticket is 2 euros for children and 4 euros for adults, and the ZOO is open every day of the year.

TAKE A RIDE ON KOMPA

Once you’re done with the ZOO, get back to the city center by Kompa. “Kompa” is a small ferry that connects the ZOO area to the city center across the river. This ferry is a free and quite interesting way to cross the river without wasting your time driving around town to get to the opposite bank. This way, you get a quiet way to enjoy the Drava River views and it definitely adds to the ZOO visit’s experience.

MARVEL AT THE ST. PETER AND ST. PAUL CATHEDRAL

This cathedral is one of the key landmarks in Osijek, and you’ll find it right in the city centre. The St. Peter and St. Paul Cathedral is a masterpiece of neo-Gothic architecture and it’s one of Croatia’s most remarkable churches. It’s known for its striking red-brick facade and towering spire, which stands at about 90 meters. That makes it the tallest church in Croatia outside of Zagreb. You can visit the church completely for free.

WHERE TO EAT IN OSIJEK?

Osijek, and Slavonia in general, is known for an incredible gastronomy scene. There are so many different restaurants you can try which will blow you away. Here’s a short list of some of the best ones:

LOCAL/SLAVONIAN CUISINE

• Carda kod Baranjca
• Cingi Lingi Carda
• Citadela
• Madarska Retfala

These are some of the best restaurants offering exclusively Slavonian cuisine. In these restaurants you can try the famous kulen (spicy sausage), cobanac (a traditional meat stew), perkelt od soma (a traditional fish stew and my favourite traditional meal!) and fis paprikas (spicy fish stew). The restaurants are good value for money, but none of them are in the city centre. You’ll need a car to reach them, or book a taxi/Bolt.

LOCAL AND ITALIAN CUISINE

• Strossmayer 2 (Pizza/Italian)
• El Paso (Pizza/Italian)
• Rustika (Pizza/Italian)
• American Bar Dollar (Burgers/BBQ)
• Lumiere (Bistro)
• Ventidue (Pizza)

These are some of the most visited restaurants with more international cuisine. Most of them are focused on Italian cuisine with great pizzas, but there are others which offer a dash of French and American cuisines. They are quite affordable and almost all in the city centre, reachable by a short walk.

DESSERTS

• Waldinger
• Morsel (ex Rocher)

If you’re looking for an excellent sweet treat, these 3 options will surely satisfy your sweet tooth. Che Che and Waldinger are excellent cake/ice cream shops with absolutely delicious sweets. If you’re up for something bigger, Morsel offers excellent pancakes and waffles which can be both sweet and savoury. All three are situated in the city centre, so you can reach them easily.

CONCLUSION: ONE DAY IN OSIJEK

Osijek is my absolute favourite place in the world! I know I’m biased since it’s my hometown, but it’s truly beautiful, welcoming, friendly, calm, and authentic. Visiting Slavonia will give you a completely different perspective on Croatia, especially if you have a week or so to explore the surrounding areas like Ilok, Vukovar, Djakovo, Papuk, and more. There’s plenty to do, and the food scene is incredible, so it’s hard not to love it!
