HVAR TRAVEL GUIDE

Hvar is Croatia’s most popular and sunniest island, and it’s likely already on your itinerary. As a local, I’ve visited Hvar many times, and there’s plenty to do there. These guides will help you plan your trip like a local too.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Hvar located?

Hvar is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea, just off the Dalmatian coast near Split. It’s one of Croatia’s most visited islands and a staple on almost every itinerary.

How do you get to Hvar from Split or Dubrovnik?

From Split, you can take a ferry or catamaran. It’s very easy and quite a popular route. From Dubrovnik, there are direct catamarans in the summer, but in the shoulder season you need to take a car ferry from Drvenik or a catamaran in Split.

What is Hvar known for?

Hvar is known for its sunny weather, clear sea, historic towns, amazing beaches, and a lively social scene compared to other islands. You’ll also find lavender fields, great food, and lovely boat trips from there!

Is Hvar worth visiting?

Yes, definitely. It’s an amazing place where you can enjoy beautiful beaches and crystal-clear sea, along with historic towns and a lively nightlife scene. Hvar really does have it all and is more than worth a visit. However, it’s not for everyone. Here’s my blog post to help you decide whether Hvar is the right destination for you.

How many days do you need on Hvar?

Around 3 to 5 days if you really want to experience the island and have time to relax, however, even if you have one day it’s enough to see Hvar Town!

How do you get around Hvar island?

Most people rent a scooter or come with a car, especially if they want to explore beyond the main towns. But there are also buses, local taxis, and water taxis if you prefer not to drive.

Can you bring a car to Hvar?

Yes, you can take your car on the ferry from Split to Stari Grad or from Drvenik to Sucuraj. Just keep in mind that parking in Hvar Town can be limited during busy months.

Is Hvar crowded in summer?

Yes, especially in July and August. If you’re after a quieter experience, April, May, June and September are the best options.

Can you swim in Hvar in May or October?

You can, although the water is a bit cooler in May, but there are people swimming if you dont mind the cold. But in October you will have no issues entering the sea for a swim as its still warm from the summer.

Where should you stay on Hvar island?

Hvar Town is great if you want to be in the middle of everything, while Stari Grad is better for a quieter, more laid-back atmosphere. Here’s a blog post comparing Stari Grad and Hvar Town! We also really enjoyed staying in Vrboska, but that’s only if you have a car with you, otherwise you’re too far from everything!

What are the best beaches on Hvar?

There are so many incredible beaches on Hvar island. My favourites would definitely be Dubovica and Malo Zarace, but check out my blog post on best Hvar beaches to get more information!

Is Hvar good for nightlife?

Yes, Hvar has one of the best nightlife scenes in Croatia, at least it used to be like that. Nowadays it’s a bit quieter due to noise restrictions, but it’s still lively without being overwhelming, and there’s a good mix of bars, beach clubs, and clubs.

Is Hvar safe for tourists?

Hvar is very safe, just like Croatia in general. Like anywhere, keep an eye on your belongings and take care on nights out, but there’s nothing serious that could happen to you!
