LOOKING FOR ISLAND ITINERARIES?
Not sure which Croatian islands to visit or how long to spend on each one?
Choose one of the island itineraries and I’ll show you the best things to see and do, where to stay, how to get around, and how to make the most of your time from my first-hand experience!

Which island is best for nightlife?
For years, Hvar was the go-to spot for nightlife. With the new noise restrictions, it’s not as crazy as it used to be, but it’s still lively. Outside venues and bars close at midnight, but indoor parties go on as always. Pag is also super popular for parties at one of the many clubs on Zrce Beach!
Are the Croatian islands expensive to visit?
The more popular islands (like Hvar, Brac, and Korcula) are definitely expensive, while the less popular ones are usually more affordable. Groceries and everyday things can sometimes cost a bit more just because you’re on an island, and ferry ticket prices depend on how far the island is from the mainland.

How do you get to the islands?
Croatia has three main ferry companies that run passenger boats and car ferries: Jadrolinija, TP Line, and Krilo. It’s always best to book directly with them, and only use a third party if you can’t get tickets from the official sites.
When is the best time to visit croatia FOR BEACHES
If your main goal is to enjoy Croatia’s beach life and hop between islands for swimming, sunbathing, and crystal-clear Adriatic waters, I’d definitely recommend visiting from mid-June to the end of September. This is the best time to make the most of Croatia’s beaches, spend long, sunny days by the sea, and enjoy everything island life has to offer.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
How many islands does Croatia have?
Croatia has more than 1,200 islands, islets, and reefs along its Adriatic coast… so, a lot! However, only around 48 of these islands are inhabited year-round and can be visited by ferry.
Which Croatian island is the most popular?
The most popular Croatian island is definitely Hvar, it’s on pretty much everyone’s itinerary. Right behind it are Brac and Korcula, which are also big favourites. I’d have to say my favourites are Korcula and Lopud!
Are there hidden or less touristy islands worth visiting?
There are so many islands worth visiting that don’t get as many tourists. Vis, for example, is popular because of the Blue Cave, but not a lot of people actually stay there for a few days since it’s a bit further from the mainland. Cres is beautiful, as well as Šolta, Lastovo, and Dugi Otok.
Where should you stay on the Croatian islands?
It really depends on what you’re looking for, but if you want to make the most of your stay, I’d usually recommend choosing a larger town as your base. You’ll have more restaurants, things to do, day trips, and ferry connections nearby, which makes exploring the island and travelling onwards much easier. Of course, if you’re renting a car, you’ll have much more freedom to stay in smaller villages or quieter areas without depending so much on public transport. It really comes down to your travel style and the kind of holiday you want!
Which Croatian islands are best for families?
In my opinion, Brac, Korcula, Rab, and Pag are all great choices for a family holiday. They offer a variety of beaches, plenty of places to explore, and a more relaxed atmosphere in many areas compared to busier spots on Hvar. Rab is particularly worth considering if you’re travelling with younger children, as it’s known for its sandy beaches, while the other islands offer a lovely mix of pebble beaches, shallow bays, and family-friendly seaside towns.
Are Croatian islands crowded in July and August?
Yes, Croatian islands can get very busy in July and August, especially the most popular destinations and their main towns, but that doesn’t mean every island is overcrowded! From my personal experience visiting Korčula in July and August 2026, I found it much calmer than Hvar, and it was still easy to explore and enjoy the island. My advice is to look beyond the most famous destinations and consider smaller islands, quieter villages, or places that take a little more effort to reach. You can still enjoy a wonderful summer holiday without feeling surrounded by crowds everywhere you go.
Which Croatian islands are best for a weekend trip?
This really depends on where you’re staying on the mainland. If you’re based in Split, Brač and Hvar are great options for a short island escape, and Vis can also work well if you plan your ferry connections carefully. From Dubrovnik, you can explore nearby islands such as Lokrum and Lopud on shorter trips, while Korčula and Mljet are lovely options if you have more time. Just make sure to check the ferry schedules before planning your trip, as connections and travel times vary depending on the island and season.
