THE ULTIMATE 3 DAY HVAR ITINERARY: HOW TO SPEND THE PERFECT 3 DAYS ON HVAR ISLAND

If you’re looking for the perfect 3 day Hvar itinerary, this is exactly how I would spend three perfect days on the island as a Croatian local.

Hvar is probably the most popular island in Croatia, and almost everyone includes it in their itinerary. While not everyone has the time to stay for long, I’d absolutely recommend spending at least a few days here if you can. I’ve visited Hvar many times over the years, and this is how I would plan the perfect 3 day Hvar itinerary if I wanted to see as much of the island as possible while still leaving enough time to relax and enjoy the incredible atmosphere. Let’s get into it!

WHY SPEND 3 DAYS ON HVAR ISLAND?

Three days is the perfect amount of time to spend on Hvar in my opinion. If you only have one day, you can still see the highlights and get a great feel for the island, so it’s absolutely worth visiting even on a day trip. On the other hand, if you have more than three days, you’ll have plenty of time to relax on the beach and enjoy the sea, but the activities can start to feel a bit repetitive, especially if you don’t have a car.

Three full days, however, feels just right. It gives you enough time to properly explore Hvar Town, see some of the other beautiful parts of the island, and still fit in a boat tour, beach time, or even a wine tasting. For me, it’s the perfect balance between sightseeing and relaxing, which is exactly how I like to experience Hvar.

3 DAY HVAR ITINERARY:

DAY 1: HVAR TOWN

Day one is the perfect day to explore Hvar Town and its most important landmarks. I highly recommend spending the morning exploring the old town. Visit the Hvar Theatre, St. Stephen’s Cathedral and St. Stephen’s Square, walk around the old port, stop by the Franciscan Monastery, and get lost in the gorgeous stone streets of the old town.

Sit down for lunch at one of the many excellent restaurants in town, like Fig Hvar, Dva Ribara, or Grande Luna.

After lunch, make it a beach afternoon. Either head to Pokonji Dol Beach or check out one of the beaches along the waterfront, like Bonj Beach or Beach Club Hvar. You can also visit Hula Hula Beach Bar or Falko Beach Bar, grab a drink, and take a dip in the sea.

In the evening, go up to Fortica Fortress for sunset. You can reach it by car or on foot, and it’s absolutely worth the climb. Fortica offers one of the prettiest views in Croatia and is simply a must while you’re in Hvar. The sunsets here are especially magical. The entrance fee is €12, but even if you don’t want to pay, there’s a gorgeous viewpoint right next to the fortress, so you can still enjoy the view without going inside.

Finish your first day with an incredible dinner at a restaurant like Dalmatino or Mediterraneo Restaurant.

DAY 2: EXPLORE THE ISLAND

On day two, use your car or grab a taxi and explore the rest of Hvar. The two places you absolutely need to visit are Stari Grad and Jelsa.

Stari Grad is the second most visited town on the island, and it’s incredibly charming. It has a beautiful old town that’s perfect for wandering, and the main landmark you shouldn’t miss is Tvrdalj Castle, the former home of Petar Hektorovic. The town itself isn’t very big, so around an hour is enough to see the main sights and enjoy the atmosphere.

Jelsa is another small town, and while it’s lovely to walk around, I mostly recommend it because of its excellent wineries. Winery Tomic is my top recommendation if you feel like spending the afternoon tasting local wines. Before that, you can have a great lunch at Restaurant Jelsa right in the town centre.

If you’re in the mood for a swim afterwards, check out one of Hvar’s iconic beaches, like Dubovica Beach or Malo Zarace Beach. Both are much easier to reach if you have a car, but if you’re getting around by taxi, there are also several lovely beaches within walking distance of Jelsa where you can spend the rest of the afternoon by the sea.

DAY 3: BEACH OR BOAT TRIP DAY ON PAKLENI ISLANDS

The final day is all about enjoying the sea, and honestly, there’s no better place for that than exploring the Pakleni Islands. If you just want a relaxed beach day, you can easily take a water taxi from Hvar Town and hop between some of the most beautiful stops in the area. The most popular ones include Mlini Beach, Palmizana Beach, and the famous Carpe Diem Beach Club if you’re looking for something a bit more lively and luxurious.

If you prefer something more adventurous, there are also plenty of amazing group and private boat tours available. Spending the day on a boat is honestly a special experience because you get to stop in hidden coves, swim in crystal-clear water, and reach beaches that you simply can’t access otherwise. Whether you go by water taxi or join a boat tour, this is the perfect way to end your time on Hvar!

WHERE TO STAY ON HVAR

I always recommend staying in Hvar Town. Yes, Hvar Town is the most expensive and the most crowded option, but it’s also the easiest base, especially if you want a more active holiday. Most of the island’s activities, restaurants, bars, landmarks, and boat trips are all based here, so everything is really convenient and within easy reach. There are also several beautiful beaches just a short walk or boat ride away, so you still get plenty of sea time without needing to travel far.

If you want a more relaxed holiday with fewer trips into Hvar Town, then I’d instead recommend Stari Grad or Vrboska. Both are much quieter and perfect for a slower pace (we actually stayed at an amazing resort in Vrboska!). However, if your goal is an active and fun holiday with everything at your fingertips, Hvar Town is definitely the best choice. Here are my top recommendations for where to stay on Hvar!

WHERE TO EAT ON HVAR

There are incredible restaurants on Hvar, but the majority of them are located in Hvar Town. Smaller towns on Hvar still have some nice restaurants, but Hvar Town is really where you’ll find the best dining options, from fine dining spots perfect for special occasions and celebrations to more casual restaurants.

It’s the kind of destination where food is a big part of the experience, so I always recommend planning ahead. Many of the best restaurants book out quickly, especially in summer, so reservations are absolutely needed if you want to secure a table. Here are my absolute favourite Hvar restaurants, just make sure to book in advance so you don’t miss out!

CONCLUSION: THE BEST 3 DAY HVAR ITINERARY

Hvar is an absolutely incredible island, and 3 days is just enough time to explore it properly and enjoy the stunning Adriatic Sea. I think dedicating one full day to Hvar Town and another to exploring the rest of the island is the perfect way to see the highlights, and then you still have an extra day just to relax and enjoy the beaches and crystal-clear water. With amazing food, beautiful scenery, and the incredible sea, you’ll definitely want to come back.
