IS ROVINJ WORTH VISITING IN 2026? HERE’S MY HONEST OPINION!

Is Rovinj worth visiting? I’ll tell you my honest opinion as a Croatian local right here in this blog post!

I’ll tell you immediately that yes, I absolutely think Rovinj is worth visiting in 2026 or any other year! It’s one of my favourite towns in Croatia and somewhere I recommend to almost anyone visiting Istria. But Rovinj isn’t perfect for everyone, so whether you should visit really depends on what you’re looking for, and that’s why I’m here to help.

This is my honest opinion on who will love Rovinj, who might want to choose somewhere else, and is Rovinj worth visiting for you personally!

ROVINJ IS WORTH VISITING IF…

…YOU LOVE BEAUTIFUL OLD TOWNS

If you love beautiful historic towns, you’re going to love Rovinj. The Old Town is easily one of the prettiest in Croatia, and it’s definitely in my top 3 favourite old towns, right behind Dubrovnik and Korcula Old Town. It has narrow cobblestone streets, and while Dubrovnik and Korcula are mainly made out of stone, Rovinj is full of colourful houses, so it gives you a completely different experience from other Croatian old towns.

You’ll also find little squares and gorgeous views of the Adriatic everywhere you turn, so the whole experience in the Old Town is absolutely magical. I honestly never get bored of wandering around here, and it’s one of those places where you don’t really need a plan. Just get lost in the little streets and see where you end up! It’s not huge, so you definitely won’t need days to explore it, but trust me, there are streets you’ll want to walk down multiple times!

…YOU WANT TO TRY GREAT FOOD AND WINE

Rovinj is a great destination for foodies, especially if you’re interested in Istrian cuisine. As a foodie myself, I can tell you that you won’t be disappointed with the food here, as long as you do your research and don’t fall into the tourist traps. In Rovinj, you’ll find everything from fresh seafood and handmade pasta to truffles, local olive oil, and some really excellent Istrian wines.

I really have to encourage you to try truffle pasta or any other truffle dishes because they’re an Istrian specialty and some of my favourite meals whenever I come to Istria. Some of the restaurants I recommend are: Articoka, Da Giorgio, and La Fondiaria. Wine is another huge recommendation. Istria is, along with Peljesac, one of Croatia’s biggest wine regions, so you can count on trying some exceptional wines here. Always ask for local wines in restaurants!

…YOU WANT TO EXPLORE ISTRIA

Rovinj is fun and beautiful on its own, but it’s also a great base for exploring Istria. It’s a small town, so if you have several days, I’d definitely combine it with a few other destinations on the peninsula. You can easily take day trips to places like Pula, Motovun, Groznjan, and other beautiful towns around Istria, while still coming back to Rovinj in the evening. I especially love this because you don’t have to keep changing hotels every night, but you still get to see a lot.

We usually stay in Rovinj or Pula, because those two offer some of the best accommodation options, and then use them as a base for exploring the rest of Istria. And trust me, the rest of Istria is absolutely worth exploring!

…YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A ROMANTIC DESTINATION

Rovinj is incredibly romantic, especially in the evening when the Old Town starts to light up and you can walk along the waterfront before stopping for dinner. It’s a great destination for couples because you can spend your days exploring, swimming, eating great food, and drinking wine without feeling like you have to go anywhere else.

It also has some of the best hotels in Istria, which can be perfectly luxurious for a honeymoon, and the wineries around the region are pretty magical and romantic too. A place like Grand Park Rovinj or Meneghetti Hotel & Winery would be one of my first choices for a honeymoon in Istria!

…YOU’RE VISITING OFF-SEASON

I absolutely love Rovinj at any time of the year, but it’s especially gorgeous outside the main summer season. It’s much quieter, you can actually enjoy the Old Town without huge crowds, and autumn in Istria is especially lovely.

October is also a fantastic time for food and wine, with truffle season and plenty of local events happening around the peninsula. We visit every autumn and absolutely love it even more than during the summer season. We’ve also visited quite a few times in March, but autumn still wins in my opinion! If you’re not coming specifically for guaranteed beach weather, I’d seriously consider visiting in September or October.

ROVINJ ISN’T WORTH VISITING IF…

…YOU’RE LOOKING FOR THE BEST BEACHES IN CROATIA

I wouldn’t choose Rovinj if your main priority is having the best beaches in Croatia. There are a few beautiful places to swim around Rovinj, but most beaches really can’t compare with the beaches in Dalmatia, the Makarska Riviera, or the islands, for example.

I’ve visited plenty of beaches in Istria, and while there are some really nice ones, they just aren’t as appealing to me as the ones in Dalmatia. So if you’re considering Rovinj and Istria simply for a beach holiday, I’d probably say they aren’t worth visiting for that reason alone, and I’d tell you to explore Dalmatia instead.

…YOU WANT TO ENJOY NIGHTLIFE

Rovinj has plenty of places to have a drink and enjoy an evening out, but it’s not really a nightlife destination. If you’re looking for clubs, big beach parties, and nights that don’t end until early morning, I’d choose somewhere like Split or Hvar instead.

Rovinj is much more about a nice dinner, cocktails by the sea, and a relaxed evening wandering through the Old Town. I’m not a party person, so I absolutely prefer a night in Rovinj over Hvar, but if you’re looking for active nightlife, Rovinj probably won’t be for you.

…YOU WISH TO SPEND YOUR HOLIDAY ONLY IN ROVINJ

I wouldn’t necessarily come to Istria just to stay in Rovinj for an entire week without exploring anywhere else. Rovinj itself is relatively small, and while you can easily spend a few days enjoying it, I’d say 2 days max without getting bored.

I think you’d be missing out if you didn’t explore the rest of Istria because Istria as a whole is an absolute gem and I absolutely adore it. There are so many incredible little towns, wineries, truffle experiences, and other places nearby that it’s definitely worth leaving Rovinj and exploring everything Istria has to offer.

…YOU DON’T WANT TO RENT A CAR

You absolutely can visit Rovinj without a car, but I just told you not to spend your holiday only in Rovinj, and to explore Istria comfortably, you’ll really want a car. Rovinj itself is very walkable, so you don’t need a car to enjoy the town, but if you want to visit Motovun, Groznjan, wineries, truffle farms, and other smaller places, I’d definitely recommend having one.

Public transportation isn’t really great in Istria, and booking organised tours can get expensive. You also tend to fly through everything in one day, so you get a pretty limited experience of Istria. With a car, you can explore at your own pace and actually experience everything properly.

…YOU HAVE A STRICT BUDGET

Rovinj isn’t the cheapest destination in Croatia, especially during the summer. Since I mentioned it’s as beautiful as Dubrovnik and Korcula, you can more or less expect similar prices. Accommodation in and around the Old Town can get expensive, especially if you’re looking for a nice hotel, and some of the nicer restaurants aren’t exactly budget-friendly either.

You can absolutely visit Rovinj on a budget, but I’d recommend doing it outside the summer season and choosing your accommodation carefully. Otherwise, staying in Rovinj might not be worth it for you, but staying in a smaller town in Istria and visiting Rovinj as a day trip might be a much better option!

IS ROVINJ WORTH VISITING FOR COUPLES?

Yes, absolutely! I think Rovinj is one of the best destinations in Croatia for couples. You can spend your days exploring the gorgeous Old Town, swimming, taking boat trips, going for wine tastings, and enjoying amazing dinners together.

It’s romantic without feeling overly touristy or like you’re visiting a destination that was made specifically for couples, which is something I really like about it. As a couple, we visit Rovinj at least once a year and absolutely love it every time. It’s really enjoyable and relaxing, and you can just slow down and enjoy your time together.

IS ROVINJ WORTH VISITING FOR FAMILIES?

Yes, Rovinj can be a great destination for families, especially if your kids enjoy being outdoors and exploring. There are beaches, boat trips, cycling routes, and plenty of day trips around Istria, so you can easily keep everyone entertained. Istria is also full of great family hotels, both near Rovinj and in the surrounding area, so you can really get the best of both the accommodation and the destination here!

IS ROVINJ WORTH VISITING FOR A DAY?

Yes, you can definitely visit Rovinj for a day, especially if you’re already travelling around Istria. You can explore the Old Town, visit the Church of St. Euphemia, walk along the waterfront, have lunch, and enjoy the atmosphere before continuing your trip. You don’t really need more than 1 day if you just want to walk through the Old Town, but if you’d like to explore it slowly and in more detail, then I’d recommend staying longer!

HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED IN ROVINJ?

I’d recommend spending at least 2 days in Rovinj if you have the time. You can see the main highlights of the Old Town in a day, but staying a little longer means you can slow down, enjoy the restaurants and beaches, and maybe even take a boat trip.

If you have longer, make Rovinj your base and explore the rest of Istria. If you only have one day, you can still see the highlights and get a good feel for the town. We usually visit for a weekend, so just one night if we’re only visiting Rovinj, and at least 2 nights if we want to explore somewhere nearby.

WHERE TO STAY IN ROVINJ

I’d stay as close to Rovinj Old Town as possible if it’s your first visit. This means you’ll be able to walk everywhere, easily go out for dinner in the evening, and really enjoy the town’s atmosphere. There are plenty of hotels, apartments, and guesthouses both in the Old Town and just outside it, so it really comes down to your priorities. Staying in the Old Town is more expensive, while staying just outside it can give you more affordable options.

If you’re using Rovinj as your base for exploring Istria, I’d prioritise accommodation with parking instead, so I wouldn’t necessarily stay in the Old Town.

These are my favourite places to stay in Rovinj: Eden Hotel by Maistra Collection, Lone Hotel by Maistra Collection, Hotel Squero, Monte Mulini Adults Exclusive Hotel

CONCLUSION: IS ROVINJ WORTH VISITING?

Yes, I absolutely think Rovinj is worth visiting. It’s one of those Croatian destinations that I can recommend without hesitation, especially if you love beautiful Old Towns, good food, wine, and slow travel. I wouldn’t choose Rovinj if you’re looking for the best beaches or biggest nightlife in Croatia, but if you want a beautiful and romantic town that you can also use as a base for exploring Istria, it’s hard to beat.

Personally, I continue to visit Rovinj again and again, and I think it’s one of those places that gets even better when you visit outside the busiest summer months. If you’re planning an Istria trip, I’d definitely put Rovinj on your list.

Hi. For accommodation you failed to mention Valalta Resort. We’re from Australia and stayed there for three days while visiting Rovinj and it’s only 10 minutes away. Such a nice relaxing place to stay, including for families, with its own sandy beach. It’s not the usual accommodation, but worth a mention.
