As a local Croatian, I’ve visited Hvar and many nearby spots, and these are the day trips I’d personally recommend. Some are easy to do on your own, while others are more fun if you take a boat tour. Keep reading to see all your options once you get to Hvar!

IS HVAR A GOOD BASE FOR DAY TRIPS?

If you’re staying in Hvar, you’re in a perfect spot for exploring nearby islands. Day trips to some of the most beautiful places on the Dalmatian coast are easy to arrange because boats leave daily, and you can choose between ferries, tours, taxi boats, or even renting your own. This gives you plenty of freedom to plan your day however you like. Another great thing is the variety. One day, you might relax on quiet beaches, and the next, explore historic towns or visit famous caves. Hvar really is a fantastic base that gives you plenty of options for every kind of adventure!

PAKLENI ISLANDS

One of the easiest and most popular day trips from Hvar is a visit to the Pakleni Islands. They’re just a short boat ride from Hvar Town, so you don’t need to plan much. You can get there in minutes and spend the whole day by the sea. You’ll just need to decide whether to take a boat taxi to one specific spot or join a tour that covers more of the islands, giving you a chance to see more.

Once you arrive, you can swim, snorkel, or simply relax on the beach. Most spots are quiet and peaceful, perfect for enjoying nature and the stunning sea. Some places, like Palmizana, have beach bars where you can grab a drink or lunch, so they’re ideal if you want to lounge by the beach but still have some amenities. It does get a bit crowded and the area is small, but it’s beautiful. You can reach it by water taxi from Hvar for about €10 return. If you’re looking for something really low-key, you can also take a water taxi to Mlini Beach, a tranquil and relaxing spot away from the crowds.

BRAC ISLAND

My favourite day trip from Hvar has to be Brac Island. You can take a ferry from Hvar Town to Bol, which takes less than an hour and costs around €25 one way. The main highlight in Bol is definitely Zlatni Rat, one of Croatia’s most famous beaches. That said, I’d also recommend checking out Kotlina Beach, which is my personal favourite!

You can spend the day swimming, sunbathing, or trying out water sports. Be sure to take some time to explore the town of Bol, with its charming small streets, cafes, and restaurants. While Brac has so much more to offer, even a single day trip is absolutely worth it.

VIS & BLUE CAVE

This is one of the most exciting day trips you can take from Hvar, and it’s probably one of the most popular day trips in Croatia overall, though it usually starts in Split. The main attraction is the Blue Cave, a stunning cave that glows with vibrant blue light inside. To enter, you reach the cave by your tour boat, then transfer to a small boat that can fit inside the cave. Keep in mind that the Blue Cave entrance fee is separate from your boat tour, so it can get quite pricey.

After visiting the cave, you’ll likely stop at Vis Island, which is quieter and less crowded than Hvar and is exceptionally beautiful. Tours usually include a stop at Stiniva Beach, a breathtaking spot, though it can get crowded with all the tours visiting. For booking, the best options are through platforms like Viator or GetYourGuide, though it’s also possible to try booking on the spot. Just be aware that during peak season, last-minute spots can be hard to secure, so I’d recommend booking early!

KORCULA ISLAND

Korcula is a bit farther away, but it’s definitely worth a visit if you enjoy history and old towns. The town feels like a smaller version of Dubrovnik, with stone walls and narrow streets. Korcula is probably my favourite island in Croatia, so even if you don’t plan to spend much time there, it’s worth visiting as a day trip. The ferry takes about 1.5 hours and costs around €25 per person, one way. You can travel with Krilo, TP Line, or Jadrolinija.

Once you arrive, I recommend exploring the old town, enjoying some delicious local food, and visiting Lumbarda for excellent wine tastings. If you don’t mind a longer trip, Korcula offers a completely different experience compared to the other islands and it’s absolutely worth it!

ALL IN ONE BOAT TOUR

If you only have one day for a trip and want to see as much as possible, you can opt for a boat tour with multiple stops. This way you can explore a lot in just 8–10 hours. The first tour includes Blue Lagoon, Blue Cave, Vis, and Pakleni Islands, while the second tour covers Budikovac Island, Green Cave, Blue Cave, Vis, and Pakleni Islands. Both are excellent choices if you want to maximize your day, and they come with great reviews!
