WHERE IS ROATAN

Roatan is a beautiful Caribbean island off the coast of Honduras. It belongs to Honduras, and it takes about two hours by ferry to get there from the mainland. Because it’s so stunning and tropical, it’s also a very popular stop for many Caribbean cruises.

IS ROATAN WORTH VISITING

Yes, Roatan is definitely worth visiting. This island completely swept me off my feet! Roatan is known for its clear water, coral reefs, and relaxed atmosphere, and it’s unbelievably beautiful. With friendly locals and stunning natural scenery, this island is truly an amazing destination for a holiday. My only problem with this island was that we had just a few short hours there (our cruise left at 3 p.m.). I can only hope I’ll get to come back and see more of this beautiful place.

ROATAN CRUISE PORT INFORMATION

Roatan has two main cruise ports: Mahogany Bay and Port of Roatan in Coxen Hole. Mahogany Bay is a modern, resort-style terminal with shops, restaurants, and even its own beach area. This is where we stopped with our MSC Divina cruise. There were plenty of tour guides and taxis offering island tours, but even if you don’t want to leave the port, there’s still plenty to do right there.

The Port of Roatan is closer to town, with easy access to local markets, tours, and transportation, but the port itself isn’t as pretty and there isn’t much to do inside. No matter which port your ship docks at, you can reach popular spots like West Bay Beach, West End Village, and some of the best snorkeling areas along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef very quickly, so it doesn’t make a huge difference where you arrive.

ROATAN THINGS TO DO IN ONE DAY

These are the best things to do in one day in Roatan. We did all of these with a tour ($150 for two people with Herminio Tours), but you can also grab a taxi and choose exactly what you want to do if all of these attractions aren’t your style.

VISIT THE WEST BAY BEACH

Visiting West Bay Beach is definitely one of the best things to do in Roatan. I’ll honestly be dreaming of this beach for months. West Bay is known for its soft white sand, clear waters, and super easy access to the coral reef just offshore. The beach is split between several resorts, so you’ll most likely need a day pass to enjoy it fully, but trust me, it’s absolutely worth it.

We chose Paradise Beach, where the day pass was $25 per person. It included a lounger, a gorgeous swimming pool, Wi-Fi, and bathrooms. The beach itself was stunning. You can swim in calm, shallow water or snorkel just a few meters from shore to see colorful fish and coral. You can easily spend the whole day here. We definitely didn’t want to leave because of how incredibly beautiful it was.

GO SNORKELLING

Snorkelling in Roatan is one of the island’s top activities, and if you enjoy it, you absolutely can’t miss out on it here. Thanks to the calm water and easy access to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, you can snorkel just a few minutes from Paradise Beach. You can also take a short boat tour for even better reef spots, but honestly, you don’t need to go far at all to see amazing marine life. Whether you’re a beginner or more experienced, Roatan offers some of the easiest and most memorable snorkelling in the Caribbean.

If you don’t want to book a tour, you can snorkel right at West Bay Beach. The first spot is “The Wall” (also known as the West Bay Reef), located at the far western end of West Bay Beach near the rocky point. You can actually see it from Paradise Beach, and you can easily walk there along the sand.

If you have your own gear, just swim out about 50–100 feet and you’ll reach the reef drop-off with coral, fish, and really clear visibility. If you don’t have gear, you can rent it on the beach or join a snorkel tour that includes equipment. This is the most famous and easiest snorkelling spot on the island, so expect more people, but it’s absolutely worth checking out.

For something super easy, you can also snorkel directly in front of Infinity Bay Spa & Beach Resort. The reef here is very close to shore, shallow, and perfect for beginners. You can buy a day pass for Infinity Bay, or start at Paradise Beach and walk over, it’s really close!

VISIT AN ANIMAL SANCTUARY

Visiting an animal sanctuary in Roatan is a fun and memorable way to experience the island’s wildlife up close. We visited one in Coxen Hole, where you can learn about rescued animals while getting safe, guided interactions with sloths, capuchin monkeys, and tropical birds.

Tickets are $15 per person, and it’s totally worth it. These small, family-run places focus on education and conservation, and there are around 4–5 sanctuaries on the island, so you can choose whichever one suits you best. You’ll get to feed the animals, hold them, and take loads of photos, all while learning about them in a way you probably haven’t before!

VISIT A RUM FACTORY

Visiting a rum factory in Roatan is a fun, quick stop that gives you a taste of the island’s local flavors. The most popular spot is the Roatan Rum Company, located on a hill in West Bay with beautiful ocean views. It’s not actually a factory, it’s more of a shop with tastings, but it’s still such a great stop. You can sample their flavored rums (definitely try the cream and chocolate one!), taste their rum cakes (incredible!), and see how their small-batch island rum is made.

The visit is casual and free, and since it’s on your way to West Bay Beach, you really shouldn’t skip it. It’s an easy way to enjoy a bit of local culture and pick up a tasty souvenir. We brought home a bunch of rum cakes, try the Banana and Vanilla ones, they’re delicious!!

VISIT A CHOCOLATE FACTORY

This is another thing you shouldn’t miss if you want to learn more about local traditions. The chocolate factory in Roatan is also more of a shop than a true factory, we visited the Mayak Chocolate Shop. Here, we got to sample different chocolate flavors and browse loads of locally made treats. The visit is quick, free, and super easy to add to your itinerary, so definitely try to include it in your day!

CONCLUSION: ROATAN THINGS TO DO

Roatan is an absolute gem, and you’ll definitely enjoy your day there. Honestly, I’m already jealous if you haven’t experienced this beautiful island yet. I’d highly recommend getting a tour so you can explore the whole island with your own driver, but at the very least, get a ride to West Bay Beach. You’ll find some of the prettiest Caribbean waters you’ll ever see!
