Hvar is the most famous island in Croatia and easily one of the top destinations in the country. If someone is visiting Croatia for the first time and has limited time, Hvar is almost always the island that ends up on the itinerary.

Hvar has become extremely popular over the past few years, and with that came bigger crowds and much higher prices. Because of this, Hvar isn’t for everyone anymore, especially if you’re travelling on a tighter budget or want a quieter holiday.

As a Croatian who spends every summer on the coast, I’ll share my real, honest opinion on whether Hvar is still worth visiting in 2026, so keep reading!

HVAR IS WORTH VISITING IF…

YOU WANT TO ENJOY BEAUTIFUL BEACHES

In my opinion, Hvar has some of the most beautiful beaches in Croatia. The sea is incredibly clear, and the beaches are surrounded by stunning nature, which makes them even more special. Dubovica Beach is the most famous one and definitely the standout, but many people also love Malo Zarace. I personally think Velo Zarace is absolutely gorgeous as well.

Hvar is also a great destination if you enjoy beach bars and beach clubs. Some of the most popular ones are Hula Hula Bar, Beach Club Hvar, and Carpe Diem on the Pakleni Islands. They are on the pricier side, but it’s hard to beat relaxing by the sea on a sun lounger with a cocktail in hand!

YOU WANT TO ISLAND HOP

Hvar is one of the main island-hopping bases from Split, but you can also easily go island hopping from Hvar itself. Just because you’re staying on the island doesn’t mean you’re stuck there. In fact, Hvar is a great base for exploring nearby islands.

The most popular islands to visit from Hvar are Vis and Brac. Vis is close to the famous Blue Cave on Bisevo, while Brac is home to the stunning Zlatni Rat Beach. If you don’t want to deal with ferry schedules and planning, you can simply book a boat tour from Hvar that takes you to one or even both islands. You also really shouldn’t miss the Pakleni Islands. It’s a small archipelago right next to Hvar and the most popular island-hopping destination from the island!

YOU WANT TO ENJOY THE SUN

Hvar is one of the sunniest places in Croatia, with over 115 sunny days per year. It’s known for great weather, and even when there are storms on the mainland or elsewhere on the coast, Hvar often stays sunny. It’s not just during summer, spring and autumn are usually very sunny too, so you don’t need to worry too much about the weather if you’re visiting in the shoulder season. We usually visit in April and it’s always been sunny!

YOU WANT SOME KIND OF NIGHTLIFE

Compared to other Croatian islands, Hvar still has the liveliest nightlife (with the exception of Pag and famous Zrce Beach). For years, Hvar was the main party destination in Croatia, and many people came to the island specifically for nightlife.

In recent years, and especially in 2025, local authorities introduced stricter noise regulations to bring back a bit more peace to the town. Because of this, nightlife in Hvar is more controlled, but it’s definitely not gone. Parties are now mostly held indoors, bars play quieter music outside, and many of them close a bit earlier than before. However, nightclubs still operate normally, and places like Carpe Diem Beach Club and many bars in Hvar town stay open until midnight, so you can still enjoy a fun night out.

YOU WANT TO EXPLORE GORGEOUS OLD TOWNS

I think you’ll really love the old towns on Hvar, they’re incredibly charming. The two you should definitely know about are Hvar Town and Stari Grad. Hvar Town is the most popular and it’s almost impossible to skip it. It has a beautiful old town, lively promenade, historic churches, and narrow streets full of restaurants and bars. One of the highlights is Fortica (Spanjola) Fortress, which will give you absolutely stunning views over the sea and nearby islands.

On the other hand, Stari Grad is much calmer and more relaxed, and feels even more authentic. It’s one of the oldest towns in Croatia, with stone houses, quiet streets, and plenty of great photo spots. The main highlight here is the Petar Hektorovic Castle, which you shouldn’t miss. HVAR IS NOT WORTH VISITING IF…

YOU’RE TRAVELLING ON A BUDGET

Hvar hasn’t been affordable for a long time, and it honestly gets more expensive every year. If you’re on a strict budget but still want to see Hvar, I wouldn’t stay for too long. A day trip from Split is a great option, or you can stay in one of the smaller villages on the island instead of Hvar Town. Just keep in mind that in that case you’ll need a scooter or a car to get around.

Hvar Town itself is very expensive, from accommodation to food, drinks, and especially nights out. The last time we were there, we asked a local for a more affordable restaurant recommendation and they just laughed and said, “We’re in Hvar, what do you expect?” That pretty much sums it up. If you’re really watching your budget, you’ll probably be sticking to bakeries and simple meals. Overall, if money is a concern, a day trip to Hvar Town is more than enough to experience it.

YOU DON’T LIKE CROWDS

Hvar is a very popular island in Croatia, and that also means big crowds, especially in peak summer. Most visitors stay in or visit Hvar Town, so during summer it can feel completely overcrowded. If you want a calmer experience, I’d suggest staying somewhere else on the island, like Stari Grad or Jelsa, which are much more relaxed.

We’ve also visited Hvar in spring, and at the end of April Hvar Town was almost empty. It was a completely different experience and honestly much more enjoyable. If you want to see Hvar without the crowds, shoulder season is definitely the best time to visit.

YOU WANT NON-TOURISTY EXPERIENCES ONLY

If you’re mainly looking for authentic and local experiences, I honestly wouldn’t recommend visiting Hvar in summer. While there are some unique and local things to do, they’re quite hard to find because most of the island, especially Hvar Town, is very tourist-focused during peak season. The town turns a bit into a tourist trap, prices go through the roof, accommodation is often overpriced, and restaurants are extremely expensive for food you can easily get elsewhere.

To really experience something authentic on Hvar in summer, you’d have to dig deep and actively search for it. Otherwise, I’d suggest visiting a less popular island instead, like Vis for example. It’s close to Hvar, much calmer, and still feels genuinely local and untouched.

YOU WANT SANDY BEACHES

Sandy beaches are really rare in Croatia, and Hvar is another island where you won’t find them. The beaches on Hvar are absolutely beautiful, but they’re mostly pebbly or rocky. If sandy beaches are what you’re after, you should check out Rab, Korcula, or Lopud instead.

YOU WANT PLENTY OF THINGS TO DO

While Hvar is a big island, it only has a few small towns, and none of them have a huge amount of things to do. You can see Hvar Town and Stari Grad in one day. Most of your time will be spent on the beach, exploring vineyards or lavender fields, and trying some restaurants. If your budget allows, you can take boat trips to the Paklinski Islands or Vis (Blue Cave). Overall, you can see the main sights on Hvar pretty quickly, so if you’re staying longer, most of your time will likely be spent just relaxing on the beach.

MY PERSONAL TAKE – IS HVAR WORTH VISITING IN 2026?

It really depends on what you want from your trip. If you’re looking to party, the new version of Hvar might be a bit restricted for you. But if you want charming old towns, crystal-clear sea, and relaxing vibes, you’ll absolutely love it. Hvar is stunning, and for true peace, stay outside Hvar Town. Personally, I adore Hvar and would visit every year if I could!

Yes, Hvar is definitely worth visiting. The island is stunning, with charming old towns, crystal-clear sea, beautiful beaches, and still lively nightlife. If your budget allows, I’d recommend staying a few days. If you’re on a tighter budget, it’s better to do Hvar as a day trip and save money for a more affordable island like Vis or Šolta.
