MIAMI 4-DAY ITINERARY: HOW I LOVE TO SPEND 4 DAYS IN MIAMI
Planning a trip to Miami and wondering how to spend 4 days there? I’ve visited Miami several times, and in this guide I’ll show you exactly how I’d plan my Miami 4-day itinerary.
Miami is big, and if you don’t know what you want to do, you can quickly become overwhelmed. You could easily spend four days just exploring South Beach, so trying to combine different areas and even day trips can be quite tricky. That’s why I’m here! We usually go on cruises and then stay for another 4–5 days in Miami, so we’ve had quite a few trips to Miami by now, and this is exactly how I love spending my 4 days in Miami!

MIAMI 4-DAY ITINERARY AT A GLANCE 👀
| Day | Where you’ll go |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | South Beach, South Pointe, Lincoln Road & Ocean Drive |
| Day 2 | Downtown Miami, Little Havana & Key Biscayne |
| Day 3 | Miami to Key West road trip OR shopping |
| Day 4 | Everglades National Park |
This Miami 4-day itinerary is based on our own trips to Florida and is designed to give you a mix of beaches, Miami’s different neighbourhoods, Cuban culture, and at least one day trip. I think that’s exactly what you need to get a good feel for Miami as a whole, but you can of course make it much more relaxed and simply stay around Miami Beach!
HOW TO GET TO MIAMI
You can reach Miami in many different ways, but we’ll go through the most popular routes. Firstly, you can come to Miami by air. Miami International Airport (MIA) is the primary airport serving the city. It’s huge but very well organized. You can book a flight to MIA from all major airports in the USA and worldwide.
If you’re in the United States and prefer to drive, you can plan your route that way. Miami is well-connected by highways to many major cities so you won’t have any troubles driving.
Our option is a bit different – we come from Europe to Miami on a cruise. If that’s a type of travel you think you’d enjoy, I’d recommend MSC repositioning cruises which can take you from Europe to USA in the fall, or from USA to Europe in the spring. We had the most incredible 3 weeks on the cruise, and then had an additional week to enjoy Florida!

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT MIAMI
Miami is one of those all-year-round destinations, so you can visit this city whenever it’s convenient to you. However, depending on your preferences when it comes to weather, crowds, and prices, there are some months that might be better for you than others. Check out our advice on what’s the best season to be in Miami:
Winter (December to February) is the peak tourist season in Miami due to its mild and comfortable temperatures. Average temperatures range from 60°F to 77°F (15°C to 25°C). Many events, festivals, and art fairs take place during this time so you’ll have plenty to do and see in winter. The prices of accommodation will be significantly higher in winter, so keep that in mind.

Spring (March to May) is also a popular time to visit, with pleasant weather and fewer crowds compared to winter. Temperatures range from 66°F to 84°F (19°C to 29°C). There are still many tourists who enjoy higher temperatures, and spring break is just around the corner bringing more young people for spring break parties. But overall, it’s less crowded and more affordable than winter.
Summer (June to August) is the rainy season, and temperatures can be hot and humid. Average temperatures range from 76°F to 89°F (24°C to 32°C). While it’s less crowded and cheaper, be prepared for afternoon showers and the possibility of hurricanes. Be very careful with weather updates!
Fall (September to November) gives you a good balance of warm temperatures and fewer crowds. Average temperatures range from 72°F to 86°F (22°C to 30°C). Hurricane season is still a consideration, so keep in mind that some days with bad weather are possible. We were in Miami during last week of November and had rain during 3 out of 7 days there. It’s usually very quick showers but there were a few longer periods of rain as well.
If you enjoy fun events and don’t mind crowds, winter and spring may be ideal. If you prefer fewer tourists and can tolerate some heat and rain, fall could be a good choice. Just be aware of hurricane season considerations if you plan to visit during the summer or fall.

WHERE TO STAY IN MIAMI
There are a few main areas where you can stay in Miami, but the most popular options are usually Miami Beach, Brickell, and Downtown Miami. In my opinion, the best place to stay is South Beach, a neighbourhood in Miami Beach. Although it can be quite pricey during the high season, I think the location is much better if you want to explore Miami and spend time at the beach.
The first time we stayed at the Fritz Hotel on Ocean Drive, and it was ok. The other two times we stayed at Kenmore Village Hotel and The Fairwind Hotel, and we liked both of those hotels more than the Fritz.
There are plenty of hotels to choose from in South Beach, depending on your budget. If you have a bigger budget, you can stay directly on Ocean Drive or even closer to the beach and promenade. If you want something more affordable, choose a hotel a couple of streets back from the beach. You can also look at Mid-Beach and North Beach if you want something more luxurious, quieter, or more family-friendly.
I have a whole guide on where to stay in Miami for every type of budget, so make sure you check it out below.

HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED IN MIAMI?
I think 4 days is a great amount of time for a first trip to Miami. It gives you enough time to enjoy Miami Beach, explore Little Havana and other parts of the city, and take a day trip or two. Of course, if you have longer, I’d recommend staying a bit longer, as you can then add a few extra day trips, and there are some really great ones around Miami.
If you only have 2–3 days, you can still see the main highlights, but I’d skip the day trips because you’ll barely have enough time to explore Miami itself. I have a blog post on how many days you actually need in Miami, so make sure you check it out if you still haven’t decided how long to stay.
DO YOU NEED A CAR FOR 4 DAYS IN MIAMI?
You don’t necessarily need a car for 4 days in Miami, especially if you’re staying around South Beach. You can walk to many of the main attractions, use Uber or Lyft when you want to go further, and rent a bike if you want to explore Miami Beach. However, I would recommend renting a car if you’re planning to do day trips, especially if you want to drive to Key West or visit the Everglades. We usually rent a car when we’re in Miami, as it gives us much more freedom and makes it easier to explore places outside the city. You can just rent it for the days you know you’ll do day trips.

MIAMI 4-DAY ITINERARY: WHAT TO DO AND SEE IN MIAMI
DAY 1 – SOUTH BEACH
Spend some time at the beach
Relaxing and swimming at Miami Beach is probably the most iconic part of any Miami vacation, so this is exactly where I’d start. The gorgeous South Beach stretches for about 2 miles along the eastern shore of Miami Beach, and you can easily spend a few hours here swimming, sunbathing, or playing volleyball right near Ocean Drive.
You can enjoy a few peaceful hours or meet new people, because the beach is always lively without feeling too overwhelming. We usually bring our pickleball paddles and have fun playing on the beach, which is honestly one of my favourite ways to spend a morning in Miami!

Cycle to the South Pointe Park
A place we visit absolutely every time is South Pointe Park and Pier. It’s a gorgeous green oasis right at the southern tip of Miami Beach, and it’s definitely a place you shouldn’t skip. From the pier and park, you’ll get beautiful views of the South Beach shoreline, Port Miami, the Downtown Miami skyline, and Fisher Island. If you visit in the evening, you can also watch the huge cruise ships leaving the port, which is such a fun experience.
When you’re done enjoying the views, you can also head straight to the beach for a swim. The park has walking trails, picnic and barbecue areas, benches where you can sit and relax, and even a little café where you can grab a drink or a quick bite. We love this stop and usually get here on rented Citi Bikes, which you’ll find all over Miami Beach. Cycling around Miami Beach is very fun, and I definitely recommend it!
You can easily rent a Citi Bike at various locations around Miami Beach. It’s 11.95$ for 2 hours. Read more about their pricing online.

Shop at Lincoln Road
Lincoln Road in Miami Beach is a fun pedestrian promenade, known for its mix of shopping, restaurants, and entertainment. There are rows of both affordable and high-end stores, so you can enjoy some shopping or simply window-shop as you walk around. It stretches across several blocks, and in the evening, it’s a great place to grab dinner or have a drink. We always make sure to stroll down Lincoln Road when we’re in Miami. We don’t usually shop here, though, because we always save our proper shopping for Sawgrass Mills!

Visit Espanola Way
Espanola Way in Miami Beach is a charming and historic street in the heart of the city’s Art Deco Historic District. It’s known for its Mediterranean-style architecture, great dining options, and lively atmosphere.
The street is lined with all kinds of restaurants, from Italian trattorias and Spanish tapas bars to Latin American eateries. You can try food from all over the world here, so we love strolling through the street and seeing if any of the restaurants catch our eye. It’s especially nice in the evening when the street becomes more lively!

Go for a drink on Ocean Drive
In the evening, Ocean Drive, one of Miami Beach’s most popular streets, really comes alive. Cafés turn into outdoor lounges, luxury cars cruise up and down the street, and the bars and clubs fill up with people. The atmosphere is lively and there’s always something going on. The iconic Art Deco buildings also light up in different colours at night, which looks really cool.
Grab a drink at one of the lively bars along Ocean Drive, sit outside, and enjoy the atmosphere. It’s one of those places where you can easily spend a few hours just watching everything happening around you.

DAY 2 – DOWNTOWN MIAMI
Experience Bayside Marketplace
This day is a bit more all over the place, but none of these destinations require hours and hours to explore, so you can easily see them all in one day with some Uber assistance.
Biscayne Bay is home to Bayside Marketplace, a fun and actually quite lively waterfront destination where you can enjoy shopping, dining, and entertainment. It has an open-air layout, so you can simply stroll around and enjoy the views of the sailboats on the bay and the Downtown Miami skyline in the distance.
We usually come here for a walk and to experience a bit more of Downtown Miami. It’s a nice change from Miami Beach and doesn’t require a huge amount of time, so it fits perfectly into a day of exploring different parts of the city.

Immerse yourself in the culture in Little Havana
Grab an Uber from Bayside Marketplace to Little Havana, which is essentially the heartbeat of Cuba in Miami. This colourful neighbourhood is full of Cuban heritage, and it’s an experience you definitely need to have when visiting Miami. Calle Ocho is the main street of Little Havana, and it’s full of lively salsa music, Cuban restaurants, cafés, and shops.
Don’t forget to stop by Domino Park, where locals gather to play spirited games of dominoes. You’ll also find plenty of colourful artworks and rooster statues around the neighbourhood, so take your time to walk around and take some photos while you’re here.

Go swimming at Key Biscayne
Finally, spend your afternoon and end your day at Key Biscayne. This picturesque island just south of Downtown Miami is one of our favourite places in the area. Key Biscayne is known for its beautiful beaches, Crandon Park, and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. We absolutely loved spending time in the state park, but Crandon Park and its beach also completely swept us off our feet. If you have a few hours in the afternoon, check out my Key Biscayne guide to see exactly how you can spend your time there!
You aren’t allowed to bring any glass to the beaches, so be mindful to buy plastic bottles if you want to have a drink at the beach!

DAY 3 – ROAD TRIP TO KEY WEST OR AN EASY SHOPPING DAY
For day three, I’m giving you two options. One is for those “I have to see as much as I can in the time that I have” and the second one is for those “I just want to relax and take it slow.”
The first option is to take a road trip from Miami to Key West. Key West is a gorgeous island in an archipelago known as the Florida Keys. If you decide to drive down from Miami, you’ll be taking the iconic U.S. Route 1 and experiencing some of the most beautiful views in Florida.
It’s a long drive, around 4 hours one way, so you have to be prepared for a LONG, LONG day. However, I’d say it’s totally worth it. We did this the first time we visited, and we made several stops along the way, including Key Largo, Islamorada, Robbie’s Marina, and Bahia Honda State Park. We arrived in Key West around 2 PM and had the whole afternoon to explore before starting the drive back to Miami once the sun went down.
It’s definitely tiring, especially for the person driving, so the next time we visited, we actually stayed in Key West so we could have more time to enjoy it. However, if you don’t have time to stay overnight, I still think the day trip is totally worth it.

If you don’t want to do all that, use the day to go shopping instead! If you don’t have a car, get an Uber to Dolphin Mall, which is a huge shopping mall much closer to Miami, so it’s much easier to reach. If you do have a car, drive to Sawgrass Mills. It’s not that close, around 45–60 minutes from Miami, but the shopping is so affordable and varied that this is honestly my favourite stop whenever I’m in Miami. We always make sure to visit when we’re in Florida, and you can easily spend the whole day there. Here’s a comparison guide of the two malls!

DAY 4 – EVERGLADES
Your final day should be reserved for an easy day trip that just a must while in Florida. Everglades National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve. It is an incredibly unique and expansive natural wonder in South Florida, and one of my favourite national parks I’ve ever visited. I was excited about the possibility of seeing various wildlife in their natural habitat because Everglades is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. In Everglades, you have the chance to spot alligators, manatees, panthers, turtles, and a variety of bird species.
We’ve taken an airboat tour, which is a MUST-DO in Everglades. These flat-bottomed boats skim across the shallow waters, offering an exhilarating ride while providing access to areas otherwise difficult to reach. Our airboat reached the speed of around 65 kilometers per hour (40 miles per hour), which was way faster than I expected. We had the opportunity to see birds, turtles, and alligators on our tour so it was everything I hoped it would be.
If you’re not American, the tickets today are much more expensive then when we visited so you’ll most likely have to buy America the Beautiful Pass for the best price, which is still 250 dollars. Read more about the tickets here.

IF YOU HAVE EXTRA TIME…
Go snorkelling in Key Largo
If you have the time, Key Largo is one of the best places to go snorkelling. It’s home to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, where you can explore the underwater world and see colourful coral reefs and marine life. We didn’t have time to go snorkelling during our road trip because we had several other stops planned, but if you have a full day to spend in Key Largo, I’d definitely recommend doing it. It’s a great way to experience a completely different side of the Florida Keys.

Go on a cruise to the Bahamas or the Caribbean
Cruises from Miami to the Bahamas and the Caribbean are a popular and convenient way to explore some of the most beautiful islands in the world. If you have a few extra days, this could be the perfect opportunity to add a cruise to your Miami trip and see a few different destinations in one holiday.
Several cruise lines offer different itineraries departing from the Port of Miami, including MSC, Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, and others. Cruises can be as short as 3–4 nights, while longer itineraries can last a week or more, depending on how many islands you want to visit.
This is honestly my absolute favourite way to travel, so if you have the chance to explore the Caribbean by cruise, please do it! We’ve done several cruises from Miami, and I absolutely love being able to wake up somewhere completely different every morning.

Visit Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale is another great day trip from Miami if you have some extra time. It’s only around 45 minutes to an hour from Miami by car, depending on traffic, and it’s known for its beautiful beaches, canals, and relaxed atmosphere. You can spend the day walking along Fort Lauderdale Beach and the famous Las Olas Boulevard, grab some lunch, and enjoy the waterfront. We really enjoyed visiting Fort Lauderdale, and I think it’s a great option if you want to see another part of South Florida without travelling too far from Miami!

Yes, you absolutely can, and we’ve done it ourselves. The drive takes around 4 hours each way, so it’s going to be a very long day, especially if you want to make stops along the way. Yes, you can definitely visit Miami without a car. If you stay around South Beach, you can walk to many attractions, rent a Citi Bike, and use Uber or Lyft when you need to travel further. CONCLUSION: MY PERFECT MIAMI 4-DAY ITINERARY EXPERIENCE
I think 4 days in Miami gives you a great balance between exploring and relaxing. You can spend plenty of time at Miami Beach, explore some of the city’s most interesting neighbourhoods, experience Little Havana, and still fit in a day trip or two.
Of course, you can easily adjust this itinerary depending on what you enjoy most. If you love beaches, spend more time around Miami Beach. If you love shopping, dedicate a full day to Sawgrass Mills. And if you want to see more of South Florida, swap one of the city days for Key West or the Everglades.
We’ve visited Miami several times now, and this is how I’d personally spend 4 days there. It gives you a little bit of everything without trying to cram too much into every single day!
