LOCAL’S TAKE ON CROATIA IN OCTOBER: WEATHER, CROWDS, AND WHAT TO DO IN AUTUMN

If you’re thinking of visiting Croatia in October, let me tell you why that’s an excellent idea!

Although Croatia is mainly known as a summer destination, this country is stunning all throughout the year. Depending on what kind of holiday you enjoy, October, or autumn in general, might actually be an even better time for you to visit than the summer months. As a Croatian, I can tell you that Croatia is absolutely beautiful in autumn. There’s nothing I love more than early autumn on the coast.

If you’re planning a trip to Croatia in October, I’ll tell you everything you need to know, from what the weather is like and what to pack to the best places to visit and things to do. I’ll also explain what you can expect from Croatia in October and why it might be the best time to visit Croatia!

CROATIA IN OCTOBER AT A GLANCE

If you can’t read the whole article now, at least take a look at this table with the most common questions about visiting Croatia in October. In short, I can tell you that the crowds are much, much smaller, the weather is still mainly pleasant with a bit more autumn rain, and if you’re visiting the south, you can still go swimming!

Croatia in OCTOBER at a glance 👀

Average coastal temperatures: 16–23°C
Sea temperature: roughly 20–22°C
Weather: mild and pleasant, but increasingly changeable toward the end of the month
Swimming: yes, especially during the first half of October and in southern Croatia
Crowds: Much lower than July/August, especially from mid-October
Prices: Generally lower than peak summer, especially for accommodation
Ferries: Regular routes still run, but schedules become less frequent
Special season: truffle, wine and olive harvests, especially in Istria and other rural regions
Best activities: sightseeing, beaches, hiking, national parks, food & wine, road trips

IS IT A GOOD TIME TO VISIT CROATIA IN OCTOBER

Yes, absolutely! October is a great time to visit Croatia, especially if you want to explore the country without the crowds and intense summer heat. I love travelling all over Croatia in October, but my favourite places are definitely those with a bit of autumn foliage, especially the national parks!

The weather is usually still pleasant along the coast, prices are lower than in July and August, and you can enjoy Croatia’s beautiful towns, national parks and nature much more peacefully. October is also a great month for food and wine lovers, because the grape harvest is finishing and truffle and olive seasons are beginning in parts of the country (truffle season is my favourite season!)

However, October is not the same as summer, and I think it’s important to know what to expect before booking your trip. Rain is more likely, especially later in the month, the evenings are cooler, and some seasonal restaurants, beach bars, hotels and ferry connections start closing down for the winter. The first half of October can still feel surprisingly summery, particularly in southern Dalmatia, but the second half is much more autumnal and gives off-season atmosphere.

Personally, I love Croatia in October. If you asked me whether I’d rather explore Dubrovnik or Split in comfortable 20°C weather or in the middle of the summer heat, obviously I’d choose October without hesitation. And if you’re visiting the south during the first half of the month, you can still get beautiful beach days and go swimming.

So, if you’re looking for a relaxed Croatian holiday with fewer tourists, great sightseeing weather and lower prices, October is definitely a month I’d recommend. However, if your main goal is guaranteed sunshine, hot temperatures and spending every day on the beach, I’d choose an earlier month instead, either August or September.

EARLY OCTOBER VS LATE OCTOBER IN CROATIA

Early October and late October can be very different, so keep this in mind when choosing your travel dates. Early October can still feel quite summery, with warm temperatures and a relatively warm sea that is usually comfortable enough for swimming. By mid- and late October, temperatures are lower, and I personally wouldn’t find the sea warm enough for a swim. However, if you’re fine with cooler sea temperatures, swimming is still possible. Here’s my quick overview of each part of October and what you can expect:

Early OctoberMid-OctoberLate October
WeatherWarm and pleasantMild and pleasantCooler and more variable
SeaWarm & swimmableStill swimmableCooler but still possible
CrowdsLowVery lowLowest
PricesLowerLowerLowest
FerriesMostly goodReduced schedulesMore limited schedules
Best forBeach + sightseeingSightseeing + natureRoad trips, hiking, autumn foliage

I definitely recommend coming to Croatia in October, but you need to be flexible and spontaneous, because the weather can vary a lot and you need to be prepared to change your plans if it does. We’ve had several occasions when we booked a charming, sunny weekend by the sea in Istria, only to find ourselves wearing coats because the weather suddenly turned cold.

But that’s the beauty of travelling in October, you can adapt! Instead of spending the day at the beach or doing sea activities, we explored inland towns, tried great food and visited national parks. There are plenty of things to do in Croatia that don’t depend on warm, sunny weather.

In the south, you can generally expect better and warmer weather, but even there, nobody can guarantee sunshine in October. So my advice is to come to Croatia in October expecting that you might not be able to enjoy the sea, and be happily surprised if your days turn out to be warm enough for swimming and beach time.

At the very least, you won’t have to deal with the summer crowds, and you’ll get to experience Croatia like a local.

WHAT’S THE WEATHER LIKE IN CROATIA IN OCTOBER

October in Croatia is generally mild and pleasant, especially along the coast, but the weather becomes more unpredictable as the month goes on, so you can honestly expect a bit of everything! You can still get plenty of warm, sunny days, but you should also be prepared for colder temperatures and some rain.

The coast is warmer than inland Croatia, so places like Plitvice Lakes and Zagreb will definitely be colder, with a higher chance of rain than along the coast. The days are also noticeably shorter, so you can expect it to be dark by around 6 p.m. and should plan your days accordingly!

CROATIA OCTOBER TEMPERATURES BY DESTINATION

DestinationAverage DayAverage NightSea Temperature
Dubrovnik20–22°C14–16°C~21–22°C
Split20–22°C14–16°C~20°C
Hvar20–22°C15–17°C~21°C
Zadar19–21°C13–15°C~20°C
Rovinj18–20°C11–13°C~20°C
Pula18–20°C11–13°C~20°C
Rijeka18–20°C12–14°C~19–20°C
Zagreb15–18°C8–11°C—
Plitvice Lakes13–16°C6–9°C—

Keep in mind that these are averages for the whole month, so the beginning of October can definitely be warmer. On the other hand, if you’re visiting in mid or late October, you could get days around 15–20°C, which is definitely not swimming weather! For inland destinations, especially Zagreb and Plitvice Lakes, you’ll absolutely want to bring a coat.

DOES IT RAIN IN CROATIA IN OCTOBER?

Yes, October is definitely rainier than the summer months, or even September, but that doesn’t mean you’ll have rain throughout your trip. You can still get plenty of beautiful, sunny days, especially if you’re visiting the coast. October averages around 7–10 days of rain, with the northern Adriatic and Dubrovnik (yes, you read that right!) generally getting more rain than places like Split or Hvar.

The biggest thing to remember is that October weather can be unpredictable. You could have several sunny days in a row and then suddenly get a rainy day or two. Rain is also more likely later in the month, so I wouldn’t plan an October trip and expect perfect weather every day.

If you’re visiting Dubrovnik, Split or the islands, there’s still a good chance of getting plenty of sunshine, especially in early October. But inland places like Zagreb and Plitvice Lakes will definitely be colder and wetter, so make sure you have some rainy-day activities planned in your itinerary.  Don’t let the possibility of rain put you off visiting Croatia in October. Just come prepared with a light waterproof jacket and, most importantly, be flexible with your plans!

CAN YOU SWIM IN CROATIA IN OCTOBER?

Yes, you can if you come early! The sea is still relatively warm at the beginning of October with temperatures around 20-23°C, especially in southern Croatia, so you can definitely get some swimming in if the weather is sunny. I personally wouldn’t count on swimming later in the month, because the sea and air temperatures can get quite chilly.

If swimming is important to you, I’d definitely choose the first half of October and stay in the south, but bring your swimsuit either way because you never know when Croatia will surprise you with a beautiful summer-like day in October!

IS CROATIA CROWDED IN OCTOBER?

No, Croatia is definitely not crowded in October! This is actually one of my favourite things about visiting Croatia at this time of year. The summer crowds are mostly gone, so you can explore popular places like Dubrovnik, Split and Plitvice Lakes much more peacefully.

You will still see tourists, especially in the most popular destinations and when cruise ships are in port, but nothing compared to July and August. By late October, it will feel really quiet, with some places almost feeling like they’ve gone back to their local pace. If you want to enjoy Croatia without the huge summer crowds, October is a great choice.

IS CROATIA EXPENSIVE IN OCTOBER?

Croatia in October is generally more affordable than during the peak summer months of July and August, and you can often find some really good deals, especially if you’re travelling later in the month. Even we love travelling in October for the prices, because honestly a lot of Croatians can’t afford Croatian coast in peak season.

Accommodation prices usually drop quite a bit after the summer season, particularly from mid-October onwards. Apartments and guesthouses often have much better rates and more availability than they do in July and August. However, popular destinations like Dubrovnik, Hvar and Rovinj can still be relatively expensive, especially during the beginning of October when the weather can still be lovely.

Flights can also be cheaper than during the summer, although this really depends on where you’re flying from and when you book. If you’re travelling to Croatia in October, I’d still recommend booking your flights and accommodation ahead of time, especially if you’re visiting a popular coastal destination. The later in October you travel, the more likely you are to find lower prices, but keep in mind that some seasonal hotels, restaurants and other businesses may already be closed for the winter.

ARE FERRIES RUNNING IN CROATIA IN OCTOBER?

Yes, ferries are still running in October, but the schedules are much more limited than during the summer. The important thing to know is that there isn’t one date when all Croatian ferries suddenly stop. Year-round ferry routes continue operating for the locals, but many seasonal catamarans and faster island connections stop or reduce their schedules as the season slows down.

If you’re planning to visit the islands in October, definitely check the ferry schedule before booking your accommodation. Some routes that are very convenient during the summer may no longer operate, especially later in October. For example, several popular seasonal catamaran connections finish around the end of September or mid-October.

My advice is to plan your island hopping more carefully in October and always check the schedule for your exact travel dates. The good news is that Croatia’s main car ferry connections and lifeline routes continue throughout the year, so you can still visit many of the islands, you just might have fewer options than you would in summer.

IS EVERYTHING OPEN IN CROATIA IN OCTOBER?

Not everything, but most things are still open, especially in the bigger towns and cities. October is still part of the tourist season, although things gradually start closing down as the month goes on.

In places like Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar and Zagreb, you’ll have plenty of restaurants, cafés, hotels and attractions open throughout October. On the smaller islands and in beach resorts, however, most seasonal restaurants, hotels and beach bars start closing, particularly from mid-October onwards.

This is another reason why I prefer early October. You’ll have much more choice and the atmosphere still feels quite lively, while later in the month Croatia starts transitioning into its quieter winter season.

WHAT TO WEAR AND PACK FOR CROATIA IN OCTOBER

If you’re visiting Croatia in October, prepare to pack for all kinds of weather conditions, depending on where you’re visiting.

When it comes to clothing, if you’re visiting the coast, pack light layers for warm days. You can often still wear short sleeves during the day, but you’ll definitely need warmer layers such as sweaters and jackets for cooler evenings. You’ll also need warmer clothes if you’re travelling inland to places like Plitvice Lakes or Zagreb. Layers are definitely your best friend in October!

You’ll definitely need a waterproof jacket or umbrella because there’s always a possibility of rain, but also bring your swimwear because you might be brave enough to swim in the sea, or at least use the pool at your hotel! Don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen either, as sunny October days can still be surprisingly warm.

Finally, good footwear is really important in Croatia. You definitely need comfortable walking shoes, because you’ll spend hours walking around cobblestoned Old Towns and nature parks. It would also be a good idea to bring waterproof shoes or boots, just in case the weather takes a turn for the worse. If you’re planning on swimming in the sea, water shoes are a must in Croatia. You can download my Croatia packing list here.

WHERE TO GO IN CROATIA IN OCTOBER

There are many destinations in Croatia you can visit in October and have an amazing time. Here are some of my absolute favourites, especially if you want to experience Croatia without the summer crowds:

Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is best explored in the off-season, so October is perfect for that. You can explore the Old Town, climb the City Walls, and enjoy most of the usual trips without the summer crowds and with more affordable prices.

The weather in Dubrovnik is usually quite sunny in October, especially during the first half of the month, so you can enjoy Dubrovnik without the intense summer heat. You might also be able to enjoy the Adriatic Sea if you’re visiting early in October. Here’s a detailed Dubrovnik travel guide you can check out.

Split

Split is usually overrun by tourists during the summer season, so visiting it in October might be one of the best ways to experience the city. You can visit the famous Diocletian’s Palace, walk along the Riva promenade, and explore Marjan Hill without tons of people around you.

Split is also the second-biggest city in Croatia, so you don’t have to worry about finding restaurants, cafés and bars that are open, there are always plenty of options. October is also a great time to use Split as a base for exploring other parts of Dalmatia. Check out my 2-day Split itinerary.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park is Croatia’s most popular national park, and it’s absolutely breathtaking in autumn. The stunning waterfalls and lakes have an even prettier backdrop when the leaves start changing colour.

On top of that, the entrance ticket is cheaper and the crowds are much smaller than during the summer. Keep in mind that some restaurants and other facilities in the national park might have limited opening hours or be closed, especially later in October, so prepare some snacks and water to bring with you! Here’s my guide to visiting Plitvice Lakes.

Zagreb

It’s always a good time to visit Zagreb, but October is particularly nice if you enjoy autumn and city breaks. The capital has lively street life, many museums, cafés and plenty of historical architecture worth exploring. And honestly, Zagreb is one of those places where the weather doesn’t have to be perfect for you to have a great time. Whether it’s sunny or rainy, there’s plenty to do in Croatia’s capital. Here’s my detailed guide to the 20 best things to do in Zagreb!

Hvar Island

Croatia’s most popular island is a great destination in October if you’re not expecting a beach holiday. The temperatures are still pleasant, and Hvar is one of the sunniest places in Croatia, but the sea will probably be too chilly for me to swim in by this point in the year.

The island is still beautiful for hiking, sightseeing and wine tasting, and you’ll have way fewer crowds compared to summer. Just keep in mind that some seasonal restaurants, bars and other businesses may be closed, especially later in October. Depending on what you expect from your holiday, Hvar can still be an excellent choice in October. Here’s my 3-day Hvar itinerary.

Istria

One of my absolute favourite parts of Croatia is Istria, and this peninsula is lovely in autumn. There are barely any crowds in Istria in the off-season, so you can travel slowly and actually take your time exploring everything. Some of the towns you must visit in Istria are Rovinj, Pula, and Groznjan. Rovinj is one of the prettiest towns in Croatia, and seeing it without the huge crowds of tourists will leave you speechless. I also really love Motovun!

Along with the gorgeous towns, you absolutely have to try the amazing food and wines Istria is known for. October is also a fantastic time for foodies, as you can go truffle hunting, try local wines and olive oil, and visit festivals focused on truffles and olive oil. I’d also suggest visiting the incredible Brijuni National Park if you have the time.

EVENTS AND FESTIVALS IN CROATIA IN OCTOBER

October is actually a great month for food and wine events in Croatia. Once the summer season is over, you’ll find plenty of local festivals celebrating truffles, chestnuts, wine, olive oil and other seasonal produce. Istria is particularly good for this, with truffle events taking place throughout October and into November.

One of the highlights is the Good Food Festival in Dubrovnik, which takes place in October and includes food tastings, workshops, special menus and other culinary events. If you’re a foodie, this is definitely something I’d look into when planning your trip.

In Istria, October is peak truffle season, so you’ll find truffle festivals and food events throughout the region. There are also events celebrating chestnuts, mushrooms, wine and local products, so autumn is a really fun time to explore the peninsula!

WHAT I WISH PEOPLE KNEW BEFORE VISITING CROATIA IN OCTOBER

Don’t come expecting summer weather.

Early October can still be beautifully warm, especially in the south, but the weather can change quickly and you need to be prepared for cooler days and rain.

Be flexible with your plans.

This is probably the most important thing. If you get a rainy day, don’t worry! Move your beach or boat plans to another day and explore a town, visit a museum, try some local food, or go inland instead.

Come early if you want to swim.

You might absolutely get lucky with warm, sunny beach days in the first half of October, but I wouldn’t plan an entire holiday around swimming because October does get quite tricky with weather!

Check what’s open before you go.

Most things are still open in October, especially in bigger cities, but some seasonal restaurants, hotels, beach bars and ferry routes start closing down, particularly later in the month. It’s good to know in advance what’s open and what’s not!

Enjoy the lack of crowds!

This is honestly one of the best things about Croatia in October. You can visit the most popular places without the summer chaos, take your time, and experience Croatia at a much slower pace.

7 DAY ITINERARY FOR CROATIA IN OCTOBER

If you’re visiting Croatia for a week in October, I’d recommend starting in Split and then making your way north to Zagreb. This gives you a great mix of the coast, nature, food and wine, and cities, but also gives you the best chance of enjoying some warmer weather and possibly swimming at the beginning of your trip. I’d recommend renting a car for this itinerary, especially once you leave Split, because it will make exploring Istria and Plitvice Lakes much easier.

DAY 1 – SPLIT

Fly into Split if possible and start your trip there, because that way you can enjoy the Croatian coast while the weather is hopefully still warm. I’d spend the first day exploring Diocletian’s Palace, wandering around the Old Town and along the Riva, and walking up Marjan Hill for beautiful views over the city and the Adriatic. If the weather is warm and sunny, this is also your chance to get some beach time or even go for a swim!

DAY 2 – SPLIT

Since one day is more or less enough for exploring Split Old Town, I’d use day two for a day trip. If the weather is really good, go on a day trip to Hvar Island. You can explore Hvar Town, have some really great food, and maybe even head to the beach if the weather is nice.

If it’s not raining but it’s also not warm enough for swimming, I’d visit Krka National Park and Trogir instead. These two are absolutely amazing together, and you’ll get to see some really wonderful places without needing to rely on the sea or beach weather.

DAY 3 – PLITVICE LAKES

Pick up your rental car and drive towards Plitvice Lakes National Park. I’d recommend spending the day exploring this incredible park. October is one of my favourite times to visit Plitvice because the autumn colours make the scenery even more beautiful, while the summer crowds are gone. The entrance tickets are also cheaper, so everything is working in your favour! Here’s my detailed guide to Plitvice Lakes. Later, stay overnight near Plitvice Lakes. There are so many incredible guesthouses and cottages around the park that you’ll absolutely love!

DAY 4 – ROVINJ

Spend the morning driving towards Istria. Make Rovinj your first stop, because it really is one of the most magical places in Croatia. Spend the day exploring the Old Town, wandering along the waterfront and enjoying a relaxed dinner. Here’s my guide to the best things to do and see in Rovinj. I’d make Rovinj your base for exploring Istria, so you can stay here for the next few days and take day trips around the peninsula without having to change accommodation again.

DAY 5 – ISTRIA TOUR

Spend the whole day exploring Istria. I highly recommend visiting Motovun and combining it with a truffle hunt and tasting. After that, I’d recommend stopping in Groznjan, one of the most incredible small towns in Istria, and I’d end the day at one of the many incredible wineries in the region. I personally recommend Meneghetti Winery.

If you’d rather focus on history, go to Pula and visit its incredible Roman amphitheatre. And if you’d like to see another national park, head to Brijuni National Park instead.

DAY 6 – ZAGREB

On day 6, leave Istria in the morning and drive towards Zagreb. Once you arrive, spend the rest of the day exploring the capital. Wander around the Upper Town, see St. Mark’s Church and the Stone Gate, and finish the day with dinner and drinks in one of Zagreb’s many cafés or restaurants. If you love autumn foliage, make sure you visit Maksimir Park because it is absolutely magical in October!

DAY 7 – ZAGREB

Spend your final day exploring Zagreb at a relaxed pace. Depending on when you need to fly out, you could visit one of the city’s museums, like the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum, Museum of Hangovers or Zagreb Chocolate Museum, explore the historic centre, and enjoy Zagreb’s famous café culture before heading to the airport.

THINGS YOU CAN’T DO IN CROATIA IN OCTOBER

Although Croatia in October is wonderful, there are some things you just can’t do as easily because of the weather and the fact that it’s off-season.

Firstly, island hopping might be limited. Many ferry and catamaran services reduce their frequency or stop running after September, so you won’t be able to travel from one island to another as easily or do all the day trips you could in summer.

Secondly, some seasonal attractions and tours might be closed. Certain tourist attractions, boat tours and day trips, as well as restaurants and beach bars in coastal towns, may be closed or have reduced opening hours. Be sure to do a little research before your trip and check that everything you want to do is actually available in October. This is especially important if you’re visiting later in the month, when more places start closing for the winter.

Next, you can’t really enjoy the beach clubs. While beaches are still accessible, most beach clubs and other seasonal facilities will be closed by October, as the weather is no longer warm enough for them to operate. If you’re brave, you can still take a dip in the sea at one of the many beautiful beaches, but you probably won’t be able to sit down for a drink or lunch at a beach club afterwards.

Finally, water sports are much more limited in October. Nice weather and warm temperatures are pretty important for activities like jet skiing, paddleboarding and windsurfing, so you can’t really count on being able to do them. Some operators may still run on particularly warm and sunny days, but many seasonal water sports rentals and boat trips will be done for the year in October.
