A GUIDE TO BADIJA ISLAND: A GREAT DAY TRIP FROM KORCULA, CROATIA

If you’re visiting Korcula and looking for a unique and secluded day trip, Badija Island is the perfect choice!

While I’ve visited Korcula many times, this most recent trip was actually my first time visiting Badija, a small island located just off the coast of Korcula Town. I’d heard plenty of great things about it over the years, but now that I’ve finally been there myself, I can honestly say it’s every bit as charming as people make it out to be. Keep reading to find out everything you need to know before visiting Badija Island from Korcula!

WHERE IS BADIJA?

Badija Island is a small, peaceful island located just off the coast of Korcula Island. It’s part of the beautiful Korcula archipelago and it’s very easy to reach from Korcula Town.

Despite being so close to Korcula, Badija is actually surprisingly secluded, so it’s the perfect place to escape the crowds, slow down, and enjoy nature. The island is best known for its Franciscan monastery, shaded walking paths, resident deer, and beautiful swimming spots, which is why it’s one of the most unique day trips from Korcula!

HOW TO REACH BADIJA ISLAND FROM KORCULA

Getting to Badija Island from Korcula Old Town is quick and easy. During the tourist season, regular water taxis and boat services operate from Korcula Town, and the ride takes only around 15 minutes. Boats usually depart from the waterfront near the Old Town, so you can simply walk up to one of the water taxi operators and ask when the next boat is leaving.

Currently, boats run every 30 minutes from 9 AM to 7 PM, and a return ticket costs 10 euros per person. On the day we visited, the sea was quite choppy so it was a bit of a nightmare for anyone who gets seasick, so I’d definitely recommend choosing a calm day if you’re sensitive to it and planning a trip to Badija Island!

IS BADIJA WORTH VISITING

If you’re looking for a relaxing and very easy day trip, Badija Island is absolutely worth visiting. Badija combines natural beauty, history, and peace in a way that’s hard to find elsewhere, especially in southern Croatia. Unlike some of Croatia’s more developed islands, Badija remains largely untouched, so it’s the perfect place to slow down and enjoy nature.

Whether you want to swim, take photographs, enjoy a beautiful walk, or simply relax by the crystal-clear sea, Badija is a great escape from the crowds of Korcula Old Town. If you’re looking for a relaxed day, it’s perfect for that. But if you want something more active, with lots of sightseeing or activities, you might be better off choosing another boat trip around Korcula instead.

WHAT TO DO ON BADIJA ISLAND:

Although Badija Island is relatively small, there are still a few things that can keep you entertained during your visit. The island is perfect for an easy-going, relaxing day with plenty of opportunities to swim, walk along the coastline, and explore a bit of its history.

Most people come here to disconnect from the crowds and reconnect with nature while enjoying the incredible Adriatic Sea. If you’re expecting lots of activities or a packed itinerary, then Badija might feel a bit too quiet!

GO FOR A SWIM

One of the best reasons to visit Badija Island is its fantastic swimming spots. The island’s shoreline is quite rocky, but it’s also full of small coves and beaches where you can enjoy a swim. The sea here is unbelievably clear, largely because the island is much less crowded than many nearby beaches. Not only is the water absolutely stunning, but you’ll also have no trouble finding a quiet spot all to yourself.

Entry into the sea is mostly over rocks, with a few pebbly beaches, so it’s not the best option for small children. I’d also recommend bringing water shoes to make getting in and out of the sea a bit more comfortable. That said, it’s a really enjoyable and authentic swimming experience, and one of the best ways to enjoy the natural beauty of the island.

TAKE PHOTOS WITH THE DEER

Badija Island’s most famous residents are its friendly deer, which roam freely across the island. In fact, many people visit Badija specifically to see them, and you’ll often spot them almost as soon as you step off the water taxi. I loved them!

The deer are surprisingly comfortable around visitors and, while you’re not allowed to feed them, they often wander close enough for some incredible photos. Trust me, seeing deer casually strolling through the pine trees with the Adriatic Sea in the background is one of the most memorable experiences you can have on Badija.

EXPLORE THE CHURCH AND AROUND THE MONASTERY

The heart of Badija Island is its beautiful Franciscan monastery and church, dating back to the 15th century. Even if you’re not particularly interested in religious history, it’s still well worth a visit because it offers a really fascinating glimpse into the island’s past.

In the 14th century, Badija was donated to Bosnian Franciscans, who later built the monastery on the island. Over the centuries, it became an important cultural, educational, and religious centre for the region and remained so until the Second World War, when the island was taken from the Franciscans.

In 2003, the island was returned to the Franciscan order, and today you can still explore this rich history while visiting the monastery and its surroundings. It’s one of the most important landmarks on the island and a key part of what makes Badija so special.

GO FOR LUNCH

After a morning of exploring and swimming, stop for lunch near the monastery area. When we visited in June, the restaurant wasn’t open yet, but it usually operates during the peak summer months of July and August. There you can enjoy fresh seafood, grilled dishes, salads, and local Croatian specialties. Eating on Badija Island isn’t about luxury but about enjoying a simple meal surrounded by nature and beautiful sea views.

If you’re visiting outside the main summer season, I’d recommend bringing some snacks and drinks with you. You could even order a snack box from Ciz Pliz before catching the water taxi, so you have everything you need for a relaxing day on the island.

CONCLUSION: SHOULD YOU ACTUALLY VISIT BADIJA ISLAND?

Yes, absolutely!! Especially if you’re staying on Korcula and looking for an easy and affordable island day trip. Badija is a really unique place. It’s not an island packed with attractions, beach clubs, or nightlife, but that’s exactly what makes it special. The peaceful atmosphere, beautiful nature, crystal-clear sea, historic monastery, and friendly deer will create an experience for you that’s very different from many other destinations in Croatia.

If you’re looking for a relaxing day surrounded by nature, with plenty of opportunities to swim, explore, and simply slow down, I truly recommend visiting Badija Island. It’s one of those places that reminds you just how beautiful and peaceful the Adriatic can be. I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to be back!
