Korcula is one of the most beautiful Croatian islands and it’s absolutely worth visiting. While many people come here just for a day trip from Dubrovnik or Split, as a local Croatian who loves Korcula, I can tell you the best way to experience it is by staying at least 2–3 days. That way, you won’t just see the beautiful old town, you’ll also have time to explore beaches, wineries, small villages, and some amazing restaurants around the island.
Since different parts of the island offer different experiences, it’s worth thinking about what matters most to you before booking your stay, whether that’s beaches, wine, local atmosphere, or convenience.

WHERE IS KORCULA?
Korcula is located in southern Dalmatia. It’s quite close to Dubrovnik, about 2 hours by ferry, which makes it one of the most popular day trips from there. It’s also not too far from Split, with ferry times of around 2.5 to 3 hours, so some people visit it as a day trip from there as well.
In my opinion, the best way to visit without staying overnight is by doing a road trip between Split and Dubrovnik, with stops along the way to explore Peljesac and Korcula. Ideally, you’d stay at least one night, but it’s still possible to see it in a day if you plan it well.
IS IT WORTH STAYING ON KORCULA?
Absolutely yes! Korcula is often called a “little Dubrovnik” because its old town is incredibly beautiful. But honestly, it feels more authentic and far less crowded than Dubrovnik, and it also has better beaches and amazing wineries, something you’ll only really find on a similar level in places like Peljesac and Istria.
If you compare it to other islands like Hvar or Brac, it’s much less crowded and not a party destination. While those islands have a lively nightlife in summer, Korcula is more focused on great food, local wine, and relaxing beach time.
Overall, it feels more authentic and less touristy. As a Croatian, I can confidently say Korcula is my favourite island, even though I really love Hvar, Brac, and so many others too!
WHERE TO STAY ON KORCULA: BEST AREAS
Where you stay can definitely affect your trip, so it’s important to think about what you want to do on Korcula. It’s not a huge island and you can always take a taxi to get around, but if being close to the beach is important to you, it’s much better to stay somewhere within walking distance rather than relying on transport.
Here’s where to stay based on your preferences:
Stay in Korcula Town if you’re visiting for the first time, want to explore the old town, or are travelling without a car and prefer to see everything on foot.
Stay in Lumbarda if you’re looking for sandy beaches, great wineries, or travelling with family.
Stay in Vela Luka if you want a more authentic and local experience, although some people do find it a bit boring compared to other parts of the island.
KORCULA TOWN: BEST PLACE TO STAY FOR FIRST TIME VISITORS
Korcula Town is the most popular place to stay, and for good reason. It’s home to a beautiful medieval old town, which is the highlight of Korcula. You’ll also find most of the restaurants, bars, and cafés here, along with the liveliest atmosphere on the island, even though Korcula isn’t really a party destination.
Staying here also gives you easy access to ferries and tours, so it’s the best base if you’re visiting without a car and want to explore as much as possible. I personally always stay here, and honestly, I wouldn’t change my location!
Korcula Younique Heritage Hotel
If you’re looking for incredible luxury on Korcula, this stunning hotel right in Korcula Town is the perfect choice. It’s always been beautiful, but after a fresh renovation in 2026, it’s now simply incredible.
It’s ideal for couples on a honeymoon or anyone looking to splurge on a truly luxurious stay. Since you’re located in the old town, everything is right at your doorstep, with beaches, restaurants, bars, and ferry connections all just a short walk away. If I could afford it, this would easily be my number one choice!
Aminess Liburna Hotel
This hotel is just a short, scenic walk from Korcula Town, and you’ll get amazing sea views from your room. It’s one of the best value-for-money options on Korcula, and while you’re not right in the centre, you’re still close enough to reach the old town in about 8 minutes on foot. It’s a great choice for couples and anyone looking for a relaxed stay with a view. The hotel also has a pool and is located close to Banje Beach, which is a nice bonus for easy beach access.
Moro Inn
Moro Inn is a small guesthouse that offers a peaceful and modern stay just outside the busy centre of Korcula Town. It’s a great choice if you want to prioritise comfort and have a calm place to return to after exploring Korcula during the day. You’re about a 30-minute scenic walk from the old town, or you can easily grab a quick taxi if needed. It’s also close to nearby beaches, so you can enjoy the sea without going far.
Aminess Vival Port9 Resort
If you’re looking for a resort-style holiday, this hotel could be perfect for you. It’s located just outside Korcula Town and has plenty of amenities, so it’s ideal if you want everything in one place. The hotel offers beaches, restaurants, pools, and other facilities, so you don’t need to go into the old town all the time if you don’t want to. It’s especially great for families. To reach Korcula Old Town, you can either take a 30-minute walk or grab a quick taxi whenever you feel like exploring.
LUMBARDA: BEST FOR BEACHES, WINE AND KIDS
If you want a slower pace and more peace, Lumbarda is only about 10 to 15 minutes away by car from Korcula Town, but it feels completely different and much calmer. It’s known for its sandy beaches, amazing wineries, and it’s also a great choice for families since kids can really enjoy the shallow sandy coastline.
Hotel Lumbarda
This relaxed hotel is a great choice if you want a more relaxed, local experience away from the crowds of Korcula Town, while still being close enough for easy day trips into town.
It’s very close to beaches, so if that’s your main focus, it can be a really good option for a peaceful stay. Don’t expect luxury here, but it’s ideal if you want something simple, quiet, and right by the sea. You can easily reach Korcula Old Town by bus or a quick taxi ride whenever you feel like exploring.
ECO Aparthotel The Dreamers’ Club
Eco Aparthotel Korcula is an eco-conscious aparthotel that’s perfect if you want a more mindful, nature-focused stay on Korcula.
It’s absolutely stunning and ideal for couples or smaller groups looking for something a bit more unique. It is on the pricier side, but since it offers apartments, it works really well for families or groups who want more space and flexibility. It’s also very close to the beaches, so it’s a great choice if your priority is a relaxed beach holiday rather than staying in the centre.
Lumbarda also has lots of incredible Airbnb-style stays, since it’s a more local area with plenty of private apartments instead of traditional hotels.
VELA LUKA: BEST FOR A LOCAL EXPERIENCE
Vela Luka is located on the western side of Korcula and is much less touristy than the rest of the island. It’s quite far from Korcula Town, so not many people choose to stay here, but it still has good ferry connections to Lastovo or Split.
I’d generally say don’t stay here unless you have a car, otherwise you’ll be quite isolated from most of the main attractions. However, it’s one of the most authentic places you can stay on the island. From Vela Luka, you can also reach nearby islands like Proizd, known for its incredibly clear sea and peaceful atmosphere.
Hotel Korkyra
Hotel Korkyra is a modern hotel right by the marina in Vela Luka. It has clean, comfortable rooms and works as a great base if you want to explore this quieter side of Korcula. It’s a good option for both couples and families. The hotel also offers a pool, sauna, and fitness centre, which makes it feel a bit more like a full-service stay rather than a simple guesthouse. If you want a more authentic experience in Vela Luka while still having good comfort and amenities, this is a solid choice.
Boutique Rooms Kastel Ismaeli
If you’re looking for a unique, luxurious, boutique stay in Vela Luka, this one could be perfect for you. It’s located right in the heart of Vela Luka, just steps from restaurants and bars in town. Since there isn’t a huge amount to do within Vela Luka itself, having a car is a big advantage here so you can explore the rest of Korcula during the day and return to a comfortable, modern base in the evening.
CONCLUSION: WHERE TO STAY ON KORCULA
I would always pick to stay on the east side of Korcula because most of the main attractions are easier to reach from there. From my experience, staying in Korcula Town or just outside the old town is the best option. You’re close to everything happening in the centre, and you can easily access the rest of the island without much effort.
I’d also highly recommend Lumbarda if you’re planning a beach-focused or family holiday, since it’s one of the best spots on the island for sandy beaches and a more relaxed atmosphere. Personally, I do find Vela Luka a bit boring, so I wouldn’t stay there unless you really want a very local, quiet experience and don’t mind having a car to explore the rest of the island.
