10 GREAT ZADAR DAY TRIPS YOU MUST TAKE (+ MY FAVOURITE ONE!)

If you’re making Zadar your base and wondering what to explore in the area, these are the best Zadar day trips you can take, and the ones I highly recommend!

Zadar is in a great location in Dalmatia for some really amazing day trips. Since it’s a relatively small city, you’ll probably want at least one or two day trips to fully round out your itinerary. Keep reading to discover my favourite day trips as a local Croatian!

NIN

Nin is one of the easiest and most relaxing day trips from Zadar because it’s only about 30 minutes away by car. This tiny historic town is very important in Croatian history, but today it’s mostly known for its long sandy beaches and healing mud, which is why most people visit. It’s a perfect day trip if you just want a simple beach day on one of the biggest sandy beaches in Croatia. However, if you’re not planning to swim, I’d recommend combining it with another stop, since Nin itself can be explored quite quickly!

PAG

I’ve visited Pag Island for the first time this year, and I was honestly left absolutely amazed, so I can’t recommend it enough! Pag is very different from the typical green landscapes of Croatia. Instead, it has a almost lunar, rocky terrain with dramatic coastal views. It’s also home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Croatia, and it’s especially famous for its party beach Zrce Beach if that’s your kind of thing.

The island is connected by a bridge, so you don’t need a ferry, and you can reach it from Zadar in just over an hour. Pag is a great destination if you want a mix of unique scenery, swimming, and nightlife, and it’s probably my favourite on this list!

SIBENIK

Sibenik is a great day trip if you want to explore another historic Dalmatian city from Zadar. It’s about 1 to 1.5 hours south by car, and you can reach it via the beautiful Jadranska Magistrala coastal road, which makes the drive part of the experience. The highlight of Sibenik is definitely the UNESCO-listed Cathedral of St. James, but the city also has several hilltop fortresses with amazing panoramic views over the coastline. Sibenik also works perfectly as a combined day trip with Krka National Park, since you can easily spend 2–3 hours at each and turn it into a full, very fun day out.

PRIMOSTEN

Primosten is not that well known among tourists, but it’s a picturesque coastal town that’s absolutely worth checking out. It’s located about 1.5 hours from Zadar by car, and it’s a real stunner, with the old stone village sitting on a small peninsula and offering incredible views over the Adriatic.

The town also has beautiful beaches with views of the old centre, so it’s a really magical place for a swim. The historic centre itself is quite small, so I wouldn’t necessarily come here just for Primosten unless you mainly want a beach stop. If you’re not planning to just relax by the sea, it works really well when combined with Sibenik instead of Krka.

SPLIT

Now, this is a longer trip so it’s a bit more taxing, but if you don’t already have Split in your itinerary, it’s worth adding at least as a day trip. Split is Croatia’s second-largest city and probably the most popular coastal destination. It’s about a 2-hour drive via the highway from Zadar, and a bit longer if you take the scenic Adriatic road.

The main highlight is the UNESCO-listed Diocletian’s Palace, along with the beautiful old town and the Riva promenade. I wouldn’t really recommend Split as a day trip if you’re relying on public transport, but if you have a car, it’s definitely worth the journey.

ZRMANJA RIVER CANYON & TULOVE GREDE

If you want to see something truly breathtaking, this combination of two incredible places could be perfect for you. Firstly, the Zrmanja River Canyon is a hidden natural gem about 1 hour from Zadar, and it offers some of the most spectacular views in Croatia. You can find several viewpoints here, and the area is also very popular for kayaking, rafting, and swimming, so you can even book a rafting tour to experience it from the water.

Additionally, only about 30 minutes away, you’ll find Tulove Grede. This dramatic limestone ridge is known for its jagged rock formations, panoramic mountain views, and unique karst landscape that feels almost otherworldly. Even if you’re not a big hiker, there are some easier trails you can do (like me!), while more experienced hikers can explore longer routes. Either way, it’s an absolutely unforgettable day trip from Zadar and here’s a tour which combines both!

PLITVICE LAKES NATIONAL PARK

Croatia’s most popular national park isn’t too far from Zadar, so if you’ve been thinking about visiting it, it’s easily doable by car or on an organised tour. Plitvice Lakes National Park is an incredible mix of lakes, waterfalls, and greenery, all connected by wooden walking paths. I highly recommend it, especially if you have a car, since the drive takes around 2.5 hours and gives you full flexibility.

If you don’t have a car, there are plenty of organised tours from Zadar that take care of everything, you just sit back on the bus and enjoy the park once you arrive. Make sure you have at least 4–5 hours inside the park to properly explore it. On the way, you can also stop at Rastoke, a beautiful village known for its small waterfalls and wooden houses. It’s a full-day trip that requires an early start, but it’s absolutely worth it!

KRKA NATIONAL PARK

Krka National Park is an amazing day trip from Zadar because you get stunning waterfalls without the longer travel time needed for Plitvice Lakes National Park. It’s about 1 to 1.5 hours away and it’s the perfect escape if you want a break from the crowds of Zadar’s old town. You’ll need around 2–3 hours to explore the main area around Skradinski Buk. If you want to see more, you can also visit other parts of the park, like Visovac Monastery or Roski Slap. If you combine it with a stop in Sibenik or even Primosten, it’s an incredible full-day trip from Zadar.

KORNATI NATIONAL PARK

Kornati National Park is a stunning archipelago of more than 80 mostly uninhabited islands, and the only way to visit this national park is by organised boat tours from Zadar or a private boat tour. The landscape is raw, dramatic, and very rocky, but if you decide to go, you’ll experience one of the most unique seascapes in the Mediterranean and one of the least crowded national parks in Croatia. Since access is only by boat, you won’t have to worry about crowds, it’s just pure open sea and the beautiful Adriatic!

BOAT TOUR TO SURROUNDING ISLANDS

If you want a different kind of boat experience, you can choose tours that explore the islands near Zadar, like Ugljan Island, Pasman Island, and Dugi Otok, with stops at hidden coves along the way. These are usually full-day island-hopping tours with snorkeling stops and plenty of time for swimming and relaxing on the beach. I always say that a boat tour is one of the best ways to experience the Croatian coast, and this is a great way to see more local, less touristy islands. I especially recommend stopping at Sakarun Beach, it’s one you’ll definitely remember long after your trip!
