Nin isn’t a big town, but it’s very popular thanks to its charming old town and the incredible sandy beaches nearby. As a local, I’ve visited Nin quite a few times, and this is a short guide to some of the best things you can do once you get there.

You can explore the town fairly quickly, so I’d recommend either planning a few day trips during your stay or staying in a larger nearby destination and visiting Nin as a day trip.

WALK THROUGH THE HISTORIC OLD GATE

One of the best ways to start exploring Nin is by walking through its historic old gate. It’s a really charming way to enter the town, because crossing the small stone bridge into Nin feels like stepping into history and into a quieter, more traditional side of the Croatian coast. The entrance is simple but full of character, and it’s the perfect first glimpse of the narrow streets and old stone buildings waiting inside the old town.

EXPLORE THE OLD TOWN

Nin’s old town is very small, but it’s also peaceful, charming, and incredibly easy to explore on foot. Walking around will probably take you around 20 to 30 minutes to see everything, but if you choose to wander through the narrow streets, stop at small cafés, and do a bit of souvenir shopping, you’ll find the you’ll need a lot more time! Nin is also much quieter than many other coastal destinations in Croatia, so you’ll still get to enjoy it in a very relaxed and peaceful atmosphere.

VISIT THE GRGUR NINSKI STATUE

In the old town of Nin, you need to find the Grgur Ninski Statue. This statue is one of Nin’s most famous landmarks and an important part of Croatian history. Grgur Ninski was a bishop who fought for the local people and advocated for religious services to be held in the Croatian language instead of Latin. Because of that, he is remembered as a defender of Croatian culture and identity. Make sure to take a photo here, and if you want some good luck, it’s a popular tradition to rub the statue’s toe!

GO FOR A SWIM AND GET MUDDY AT QUEEN’S BEACH

Queen’s Beach is one of the highlights of Nin, and it’s absolutely stunning. This beach is a long stretch of soft sand, and the sea stays very shallow for several meters, which makes it perfect for swimming and relaxing. It’s especially popular with families, and in the summer you’ll see people from all around the area coming here to enjoy it.

Right next to the beach, you can also find natural healing mud, so if you notice people covered in mud, that’s exactly why they’re there!

VISIT THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY CROSS

Church of the Holy Cross is one of the most interesting tiny churches I’ve seen! It’s one of the most famous historic sites in Nin and is often called the “smallest cathedral in the world.” It’s completely free to visit, and while you only need a few minutes to see it, it’s still a really special stop. Around the church, you can also explore nearby Roman ruins, which make the whole area even more interesting.

EXPLORE THE SALT MUSEUM

Nin Salt Museum is a great place to learn more about why Nin is so famous for salt production. The museum explains how salt has shaped the town’s history and local economy over the years. It’s quite small, and the entrance is around 6 euros, so I’d recommend combining it with a guided tour of the salt pans for about 10 euros total, as you’ll get much more out of the experience. There’s also a small shop on site where you can buy local salt products, which make a really unique souvenir from Nin.

GO TO ZADAR

One of the best things about staying in Nin is how close it is to Zadar. You’re essentially based in a small, relaxed town, but in less than 30 minutes you can reach one of the most lively coastal cities in Croatia. I really love Zadar, but it can get quite crowded in peak season, so it’s perfect as a day trip. After exploring the city, you can return to the peaceful atmosphere of Nin and enjoy a much quieter evening by the sea. Here’s what to do in Zadar!

WHERE TO STAY IN (OR AROUND) NIN

Nin doesn’t have too many accommodation options since it’s a small town, but there are still some great places to stay in the area. I’d also say that if you’re visiting during the shoulder season, it’s worth checking out accommodation in Zadar as well, since you can stay somewhere more lively (before the crowds of peak season) and simply do a day trip to Nin instead.

Nin is a tiny historical town, and while I definitely recommend visiting it because it’s charming and very relaxing, it’s good to know there isn’t a huge list of things to do there beyond enjoying the beautiful sea and exploring the small old town.

Because of that, it often works best either as a day trip or as a quiet base where you combine your stay with day trips to nearby highlights like Zadar, Krka National Park, Paklenica National Park, or even island trips departing from Zadar. That way, you still get the peaceful coastal atmosphere of Nin, while keeping your trip active and interesting!
