If you’re looking for a truly magical destination in Croatia, Rastoke will absolutely wow you! In this guide, I’ll share everything you need to know about this charming village located in central Croatia.

As a local Croatian, I’ve visited Rastoke in almost every season, and each time it feels even more beautiful. Visitors often call it “little Plitvice” because it resembles Croatia’s most famous national park, with full waterfalls and charming watermills.

If you’re traveling to Plitvice Lakes National Park from Zagreb or elsewhere by car, you should definitely make a stop in Rastoke, even if just for an hour. Let me show you why this little gem deserves a spot on your itinerary!

WHERE IS RASTOKE

Rastoke is a picturesque village in Croatia, located near the town of Slunj. This village is only 30 kilometres from Plitvice Lakes National Park. Due to its stunning waterfalls, cascades, and natural beauty it’s often called “little Plitvice Lakes”. This village is known for its traditional watermills and wooden houses, that create a really charming atmosphere!

WHY VISIT RASTOKE

The main reason many tourists visit this village is because of its proximity to Plitvice Lakes. It’s only 30 kilometers from Croatia’s biggest national park and because they’re similar, tourists usually enjoy the smaller waterfalls of Rastoke before continuing to Plitvice Lakes. Although that’s a great reason to stop by, here are some other reasons why Rastoke is a great day trip:

Firstly, you’ll get to see incredible natural beauty. The village is known for its stunning natural scenery, with cascading waterfalls, crystal-clear streams, and gorgeous greenery (that can be seen later in the year, not in our photos ☹️). It stands totally independently from Plitvice and this village is special and gorgeous in its own way. At Rastoke, you can enjoy the calmness of nature which you can hardly get at Plitvice Lakes during summer season due to crowds!

Secondly, at Rastoke you can see traditional Croatian architecture. The village is full of well-preserved wooden houses and charming watermills dating back centuries, so you can see and experience Croatia’s rural heritage. Exploring the charming streets of this gorgeous village feels like stepping back in time.

Finally, you’ll get to see many gorgeous waterfalls. Rastoke has numerous waterfalls and cascades, and you can stroll along wooden pathways and enjoy panoramic views of the pretty waterfalls. Although there aren’t as many of them as at Plitvice Lakes, the waterfalls at Rastoke are especially charming and fairytale-like.

HOW TO REACH RASTOKE

People usually visit Rastoke from Zagreb or Split, so here’s a short breakdown on all the ways you can reach Rastoke from Croatia’s two biggest cities!

RASTOKE FROM ZAGREB

Firstly, the easiest way to reach Rastoke is by car. Rastoke is approximately 130 kilometers (80 miles) southwest of Zagreb and the journey typically takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. If you’re not coming by your own car to Croatia, I would highly recommend renting a car at least for this day trip!

Next, if you don’t drive, you can always take the bus. There are regular bus services from Zagreb to Slunj, and the journey takes around 2 to 2.5 hours. The bus tickets are from 10-12 euros one way. Once you arrive, you can either walk from Slunj to Rastoke (about 20-30 minutes) or take a local taxi.

Finally, if you prefer travelling free of stress, you can always book a tour which will take you to Rastoke. That can either be just a private transfer, or a tour of Rastoke with a tour guide. RASTOKE FROM SPLIT

There’s no more comfortable way to reach Rastoke than by car. Rastoke is approximately 320 kilometers (200 miles) northeast of Split. The drive usually takes around 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. This is a much longer drive than from Zagreb, but if you’re taking it to visit Plitvice Lakes, take those 30 extra kilometres and explore Rastoke as well (and try to stay the night somewhere nearby to make the trip easier on yourself!)

There’s no direct bus from Split to Rastoke, so the best option if you don’t drive is to book a private transfer or a guided tour which will take you to Plitvice Lakes and Rastoke. It will be a longer journey, but it’s worth it for the views!

WHERE TO PARK IN RASTOKE

There are many various options when it comes to parking, so it’s important you do your research and find the best option for you.

There are 4 car parks near Rastoke, and on Google you’ll find them as Parking Rastoke 1, 2, 3, and 4. These are the closest to the village and also the most expensive. An hour of parking costs 2 euros. If that’s expensive for you or there’s no available parking there at your time, you can check out for parking at Gojka Suska Street or Brace Radic street (0.40 euro per hour).

WHERE TO STAY IN RASTOKE

Rastoke offers a range of accommodation options, including guesthouses, bed and breakfasts, and private apartments. You really can’t go wrong with any of the accommodation options, especially because many of them offer walks on their private properties, so you can experience and see Rastoke in greater detail than those who only come for a day trip.

There are several guesthouses located within the village, offering cozy rooms with views of the waterfalls and river. The guesthouses often provide a more intimate and authentic experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in the village’s atmosphere. Some of the best guesthouses in Rastoke are Guest House Nena, and Guest House Buk.

You can also book Bed and Breakfasts because many of them offer comfortable accommodation with breakfast included in the room rate. These properties also often have additional amenities such as gardens or outdoor seating areas for additional enjoyment of the waterfalls.

If you prefer more space, you can book a private apartment in or near the village. The apartments are often equipped with kitchen facilities, so you can prepare your meals, and enjoy a balcony or a terrace with views of the surrounding countryside. WHERE TO EAT IN RASTOKE

You’ll find a variety of dining options offering traditional Croatian cuisine in picturesque settings. If you’re visiting off season please check it they’re open, and during the summer season make sure you make a reservation in advance. Here are some recommended places to eat:

Petro Restaurant is a popular dining option because it has a riverside terrace where guests can enjoy their meals overlooking the Korana River. The restaurant serves a variety of Croatian and international dishes, as well as locally sourced ingredients.

Restaurant Ambar is situated near the village. The restaurant is beautiful and offers plenty of Croatian dishes on their menu. You can have amazing food while enjoying views of the surrounding countryside.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN RASTOKE

In Rastoke, there’s not much you can do there, but you can enjoy village’s natural beauty, traditional architecture, and cultural heritage. Here are some of the highlights:

See the waterfalls and cascades

Rastoke is famous for its stunning waterfalls and cascades, which are scattered throughout the village. This is the reason you’ll want to visit, so make sure the picturesque views of these natural wonders are the first thing you get to experience. Walk along wooden pathways that provide up-close access to the rushing waters and enjoy the fairytale-like surroundings.

Explore historic watermills

The village is home to several well-preserved watermills dating back centuries. These traditional mills were once used for grinding grain and are now part of Rastoke’s cultural heritage. You should explore some of them, they’re located all over the village. Some of the mills are still operational, while others have been converted into museums or restaurants.

Marvel at the traditional Croatian architecture

Along with the watermills, this gem has many charming wooden houses and cottages built in the traditional style of the region. You should walk through the village and marvel at the quaint architecture and rustic atmosphere.

Have fun on the Korana River

Rastoke is situated on the banks of the Korana River, where you can go fishing, swimming, or simply relax by the water. The river adds to the scenic beauty of the village and is a central feature of the landscape. If you like nature, there are plenty of things you’d like on Korana River.

MY PERSONAL TAKE ON RASTOKE VILLAGE

I truly think Rastoke is exceptionally beautiful and absolutely worth a visit. The village is quite small, so you can explore it in a short amount of time, but if you’re already driving to Plitvice Lakes National Park, it would honestly be a shame to miss it.

However, if you’re not planning to visit Plitvice, I wouldn’t recommend driving all the way to Rastoke just for the village alone. You can see most of it in about an hour, so it would mean a long drive for a relatively short visit.

If you’re visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park, you should absolutely stop and explore Rastoke. It may be small, but it’s the perfect introduction to the magical day of waterfalls that awaits you at both Rastoke and Plitvice.
