AMAZING FLORENCE TO SAN GIMIGNANO DAY TRIP: ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW!

If you’re thinking about doing a Florence to San Gimignano day trip while exploring Tuscany, I’ll tell you everything you need to know!

Tuscany is one of Italy’s most charming and popular regions, and many people have it on their bucket list. If you’re planning your Tuscan itinerary, you should definitely include San Gimignano, because this small town was my absolute favourite part of the whole trip.

In this blog post, I’ll help you plan a detailed and amazing day trip to San Gimignano, including how to get there, what to do, how to spend your day, and where to eat.

WHERE IS SAN GIMIGNANO AND IS IT WORTH VISITING?

San Gimignano is a small medieval town in Tuscany, about halfway between Florence and Siena. It’s absolutely stunning and makes a very easy day trip from many nearby towns. I can’t recommend it enough.

San Gimignano is definitely worth visiting. It’s surrounded by green vineyards and olive trees (the classic Tuscan scenery) and its historic centre is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it’s truly incredible. It’s home to some of the oldest buildings and towers in Italy, and walking through the town feels unreal. With narrow streets, tall towers, and lots of shops and restaurants, it’s a magical hilltop town you’ll likely love the most on your trip.

HOW TO GET FROM FLORENCE TO SAN GIMIGNANO?

The best and easiest way is by car. I’d recommend having a car for Tuscany in general, but even if you’re just visiting Florence, rent a car and visit San Gimignano by driving around. The scenic roads are simply incredible, and driving is the quickest and most flexible way to get there. It will take you around an hour, and there are plenty of parking spaces all around the town. 

If you want to use public transfer, that’s also not complicated, but it does require a transfer. You can use a bus or a train to reach Poggibonsi, and from there you can catch a local bus to San Gimignano. It’s not expensive and it will take around 1.5-2 hours.

Finally, if you don’t want to rent a car but also don’t want to bother with transfers and public transport, you can always get a tour of Tuscany towns from Florence which almost always include San Gimignano. These are some of the tours I’d recommend!

THINGS TO DO IN SAN GIMIGNANO

Climb Torre Grossa

San Gimignano is known for its beautiful towers, and one of the best things you can do is climb the main and tallest one, Torre Grossa. It’s a bit of a climb, but if you’re not afraid of heights, you should definitely do it because the view from the top is worth it. You’ll get amazing views over the Tuscan hills, with vineyards and olive trees stretching out in every direction. You can get your tickets here, and it’s best to book at least a few days in advance since it can sell out.

Relax in Piazza della Cisterna

Right next to Torre Grossa, you’ll find the main square of San Gimignano. Piazza della Cisterna is the heart of the town, where people gather, walk around, and sit in small cafés. It’s the perfect place to enjoy the view and do a bit of people watching. You’ll be surrounded by old medieval buildings and towers, and trust me, it has a really unique and charming atmosphere.

Try the Amazing Ice Cream

Italy is known for its incredible gelato, and while you can get amazing ice cream in Florence, Rome, Venice, or any other big city, you can also try some of the best gelato right on Piazza della Cisterna! Stop at Gelateria Dondoli to try their fun, unique flavours made with local ingredients. It does get busy because it’s so popular, but it’s definitely worth it!

Walk down and shop on Via S. Giovanni

This is the most popular street in San Gimignano, and you’ll definitely end up there. We actually parked nearby, so we entered right onto Via S. Giovanni, and it was an amazing experience. The street is full of restaurants and shops where you can find almost anything, from leather bags and truffle products to typical souvenirs. It’s definitely the most fun part of town!

Explore the Town’s History

If you’re into history, there’s plenty more to see in San Gimignano. First, don’t miss the famous Duomo di San Gimignano, it’s the most beautiful church in town and full of stunning frescos you won’t see anywhere else. You can also check out the Palazzo Comunale for its museums or visit the Church of San Francesco to learn even more about the town’s amazing past.

Walk along the Old City Walls

One of the best spots in town for views of both the town and the countryside is the Old City Walls. You can climb up in a few places and get truly amazing views, so don’t miss it. It’s free, and you definitely won’t be disappointed!

Do a Wine Tasting

Finally, no trip to San Gimignano is complete without trying Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the local wine. If you don’t have time for a full tour (like we didn’t), you can taste it at the small wine bars around town. But if you do have time, I’d recommend visiting nearby vineyards. You can either plan the visit yourself or join a tour!

ONE DAY SAN GIMIGNANO ITINERARY

Arrive early in the morning to beat the crowds in this small town. Start with a walk down Via di S. Giovanni, explore the street, and grab a coffee. Then head to the famous Piazza della Cisterna and make your way to Torre Grossa (definitely climb it)! Afterward, check out the Duomo di San Gimignano and Palazzo Comunale to learn more about the town’s history.

For lunch, sit down at one of the local restaurants. Afterward, you can either do a wine tasting in town at one of the wine bars or drive to a nearby winery for the full experience. I’d highly recommend Tenuta Guardastelle, it’s one I researched in detail, though I didn’t get to visit.

I can’t recommend this day trip enough! At first, I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to do it because I wanted more time in Florence, but San Gimignano quickly became one of my favourite parts of the whole road trip. It’s an easy day trip from Florence, and even if you don’t have a full day, you can still see it in half a day by car. I was completely blown away by this small medieval town and I think everyone should see it. Don’t skip it!
