IS DUBROVNIK WORTH VISITING IN 2026? MY HONEST OPINION!

Is Dubrovnik worth visiting in 2026? I’ll tell you my opinion as a Croatian local!

Dubrovnik is Croatia’s most popular destination, and while it’s extremely visited, it’s definitely not perfect for everyone. Some people are absolutely going to love it, while others might not be a huge fan.

I personally love Dubrovnik, but as someone who spends a lot of time there, I also see the obvious downsides of the town. That’s exactly why I’m putting this guide together, to help you understand both the reasons you might love it, and the reasons it might not be the right fit for you. Let’s start!

DUBROVNIK IS WORTH VISITING IF…

YOU LOVE STUNNING OLD TOWNS AND HISTORY

I can tell you right now you won’t find a more beautiful old town in all of Europe, so if you’re someone who loves history, Dubrovnik is a must no matter what. Walking through the marble streets of Dubrovnik truly feels like stepping into another era, and when you combine that with exploring landmarks like the city walls, forts, and narrow stone streets, it’s genuinely unmatched.

I spend several months of the year in Dubrovnik, and every time I return I’m still blown away by how stunning it is. Honestly, you’ll be floored the first time you visit, and for that reason alone it’s absolutely worth going.

YOU’RE A HUGE GAME OF THRONES FAN

If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, you’ll obviously love Dubrovnik. The moment you arrive, you’ll instantly recognise it as King’s Landing. You can visit so many filming locations, not only in the old town but also in the surrounding area, like Arboretum Trsteno and Lokrum Island.

You can definitely explore everything on your own with a self-guided tour, but I’d honestly highly recommend joining a guided Game of Thrones tour because they’re quite affordable and you’ll learn so much more about the filming spots and behind-the-scenes details.

YOU’RE LOOKING FOR EXCELLENT DAY TRIPS

As much as I love Dubrovnik, I also absolutely adore the day trips you can take from there. Dubrovnik is a great base for exploring southern Croatia, and you can easily do several amazing trips by ferry, boat, or car.

You can take a half-day trip to Lokrum Island or Arboretum Trsteno, or go on a boat tour to the Elaphiti Islands. You can also take a ferry to Korcula, or drive to the Peljesac Peninsula. And if you have a car, you can explore nearby villages and beaches like Mlini, the Konavle region, and the popular Pasjaca Beach.

YOU WANT TO VISIT NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES

Dubrovnik is incredibly close to two neighbouring countries, so if you want to turn your Croatian holiday into a wider Balkan trip, that’s really easy to do. You can take a day trip to Montenegro to visit places like Kotor and Budva, or head into Bosnia and Herzegovina to explore Mostar and Kravica Waterfall.

I personally love both of these destinations, but in the summer the travel time can get quite long due to border crossings, so I’d recommend staying at least one night in each country to really make the most of the experience. YOU WANT TO TRY GREAT WATER ACTIVITIES

The Dubrovnik coastline and the Adriatic Sea here are absolutely perfect for water-based activities, so I can’t recommend them enough. Two experiences I’d highly suggest are kayaking around the city walls (it’s honestly mind-blowing), and joining boat tours to explore the surrounding islands and coastline.

There are so many great boat tour options, but the one I recommend most is an Elaphiti Islands boat tour. If you can stretch to a private tour, it’s even better, because you can reach quieter coves, hidden beaches, and spots where you can really enjoy the sea at its best.

DUBROVNIK IS NOT WORTH VISITING IF…

YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A BUDGET-FRIENDLY DESTINATION

Dubrovnik is one of the most expensive destinations in Croatia, especially during peak summer season, and honestly, that’s something you simply can’t avoid. Accommodation, restaurants, and popular activities can add up very quickly, so visiting Dubrovnik usually requires a fairly solid budget.

It is still possible to do Dubrovnik on a budget, but you’ll most likely need to stay in hostels or apartments further away from the Old Town, and public transport will become your best friend. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money, or you don’t want to lower your comfort level just to make Dubrovnik fit your budget, then Dubrovnik honestly might not be worth it for you, and you may enjoy some smaller coastal towns much more.

YOU WANT THE BEST BEACHES IN CROATIA

While Dubrovnik does have some nice swimming spots, I honestly wouldn’t say it has some of the best beaches in Croatia. In fact, I probably wouldn’t even put Dubrovnik in my top 10 Croatian destinations for beaches.

Most beaches around Dubrovnik are rocky or pebble beaches, and the few that are really worth visiting, like Banje Beach and Sveti Jakov Beach, get extremely crowded during summer. If your main priority is spending all day on beautiful beaches, Dubrovnik probably isn’t the best choice for you.

However, if you want to combine visiting Dubrovnik with amazing beaches, then Lopud is honestly the perfect solution. You can stay on this gorgeous island just about an hour away from Dubrovnik and simply take the ferry into town whenever you want to explore the city.

YOU HATE THE CROWDS

If you hate crowds, visiting Dubrovnik during the summer season will probably feel like a nightmare. Dubrovnik is extremely busy from May to September, especially on days when cruise ships arrive. The Old Town becomes crowded, and Stradun gets seriously congested.

The city walls also get very crowded during the day, so I’d highly recommend walking them either as early as possible in the morning or after 5 p.m. once most cruise ship visitors leave. If you prefer quiet and uncrowded destinations where you can explore at your own pace, then Dubrovnik is probably not worth visiting for you during summer, but you’d very likely love it in April or October instead.

YOU STRUGGLE WITH HEAT

Summers in Dubrovnik are extremely hot, and the combination of heat, stone streets, and constant walking can honestly become very exhausting. There’s very little shade in many parts of the Old Town, and climbing the city walls in the middle of the day is almost unbearable in peak summer heat.

If you’re visiting during summer, you absolutely need sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water with you at all times to stay hydrated. The first time my sister visited Dubrovnik, she actually fainted because she didn’t drink enough water while walking around in extremely high temperatures. If you struggle with heat, visiting Dubrovnik in peak summer might honestly not be the best choice for you.

YOU PREFER BIG CITIES

Dubrovnik is absolutely beautiful, but it’s also relatively small, and you can see most of the Old Town in just a few hours. That means that outside of the great day trips you can take, you’ll spend a lot of your time in the same compact historic centre, which can start to feel a bit repetitive after a while.

Dubrovnik also doesn’t have huge shopping streets, countless museums, or lots of different neighbourhoods packed with things to do. So if you’re someone who always wants new activities and constant variety, you might eventually find Dubrovnik a little repetitive. In that case, I’d recommend not staying too long, otherwise you may end up feeling like Dubrovnik wasn’t really worth it for you.

CONCLUSION: IS DUBROVNIK WORTH VISITING?

Dubrovnik is absolutely worth visiting, but I think understanding both the positives and the downsides really helps you plan your trip better, from where you stay to when you go and how long you actually spend there.

If you’re looking for a stunning historic coastal city with super easy sightseeing, incredible viewpoints, and tons of amazing day trip options, you’re very likely going to love Dubrovnik. However, it’s not the best choice if you’re on a tight budget, if you don’t like crowds, or if you really struggle with strong summer heat.
