If you’re planning your trip to Croatia and wondering how many days in Split you actually need to see everything properly, I’m here to help you out!

I’m a local Croatian and I’ve spent plenty of time in Split, sometimes just for a day and often for much longer. I know that a lot of people come to Croatia with a limited number of days, so you have to be careful with how you plan your trip and where you spend your time.

That’s why I’m here! I’ll help you figure out how many days in Split is the perfect amount of time for you, so keep reading!

IS SPLIT WORTH VISITING?

That really depends on what you expect from your holiday, but I’d say absolutely! During the peak summer season, Split can get very crowded, which can be a no-go for some people, but it also has a really charming Old Town and is the perfect base for island hopping, which is one of the best things to do in Croatia.

I’d say that depending on how many days you have for your Croatian holiday, you can adapt the amount of time you spend in Split. But even if you’re short on time, make sure you visit Split for at least a day!

HOW MANY DAYS IN SPLIT DO YOU REALLY NEED?

If you are visiting Split for the first time, I would recommend at least 3 days. One day is enough to see the main highlights of the Old Town, but you’ll have to move quickly and you’ll miss out on some of what makes Split special. You’ll have enough time to explore the Old Town and grab lunch somewhere, but that’s pretty much it.

With 3 days, you can properly explore the city, slow down a little, enjoy the beaches, and take one day trip. If you have 5 days, that’s even better, because you can use Split as a base for exploring more of the surrounding area.

Personally, I think 3–5 days is the sweet spot, but 1 day can definitely work if Split is just a quick stop on a larger Croatia itinerary or you’re visiting on a cruise.

HOW TO SPEND 1 DAY IN SPLIT

For one day in Split, start early so you can use the whole day. Begin in the Old Town and explore Diocletian’s Palace before the biggest crowds arrive. Walk through the palace, visit Peristyle Square and the Cathedral and Bell Tower, and you can even sit down for a coffee right there in Peristyle Square.

After that, simply get lost in the little streets surrounding the palace. Visit People’s Square, the Golden Gate, and the Grgur Ninski statue. After all that walking, sit down for lunch. I recommend Fig or Buffet Fife for something more affordable, and Makarun or Portofino if you want something a bit fancier.

After a delicious lunch, walk along the Riva and continue towards the western part of the city, where you can explore Republic Square. If you still have the energy, climb to the first viewpoint on Marjan for some of the best views over Split. Finish your day with drinks and some gelato from Emiliana or Ela’s!

I also have a one-day Split itinerary specifically for cruisers, so check that out if you’re coming by cruise or simply only have one day in Split!

HOW TO SPEND 3 DAYS IN SPLIT

I would spend Day 1 exploring Split’s Old Town and Diocletian’s Palace, just like I described in the one-day itinerary. That way, you’ve covered the most important highlights on day one, and the other two days can be for relaxing and enjoying experiences away from Split.

On Day 2, slow things down a little and enjoy the sea. If you want an easy, lazy day, either go to Kasjuni Beach or head to Znjan if you want to spoil yourself at a beach club. If you want something more active, do a half-day boat tour to the incredible Blue Lagoon, where you’ll get to swim in some of the clearest sea in Croatia.

For Day 3, I would take a day trip from Split to Hvar. Hvar is Croatia’s most popular island and it’s a place you simply must visit, so if you’re not staying there for a few nights, make sure you at least visit it as a day trip.

This is why I love having three days in Split. You’ll get to experience the city itself but also explore a bit of the surrounding area, without having to rush through everything!

HOW TO SPEND 5 DAYS IN SPLIT

With five days, you have time to experience absolutely everything, and if I could recommend any length of time, I think 5 days is absolutely perfect. I’d do the first three days as I described before, but I’d separate the beach and the boat trip into two different days. That way, you get a whole day to relax on the beach and you can even switch between a few different ones easily.

On the other day, I’d do a boat tour. Now that you have the whole day, you can still do the Blue Lagoon, but you also have enough time for the Blue Cave tour, which takes more or less the whole day. On your final day, you can do a day trip to Krka National Park and Trogir, spending half a day at each location. That way, you’ll have truly covered almost everything you need to see in and around Split!

I have a whole 5-day Split itinerary written as well, so check it out if you have five days in Split available and want to see exactly how I’d plan it!

CONCLUSION: MY LOCAL OPINION ON HOW MANY DAYS IN SPLIT YOU NEED

If you ask me how many days in Split you actually need, my answer is 3 days for most people on a tighter schedule, and 5 days if you want to explore more of Dalmatia around Split.

One day is perfectly fine if you’re travelling around Croatia and Split is just a stop along the way, or if you’re visiting by cruise. But if you have more time available, I’d definitely stay longer. Three days gives you enough time to see the main sights, enjoy the city, and fit in a day trip, while five days lets you slow down and explore a lot more than just Split.

And if you feel like you don’t want to stay that long in Split because of the crowds, you can easily stay in Trogir instead, visit Split for a day, and still explore the surrounding area while staying in a much calmer town. So definitely keep that option in mind!
