Hi there - we are a family of 4 - (w/teen boys 15-18yo) and will be traveling to Croatia for 10 days in April. We are splitting our time between Split, Žrnovo and Dubrovnik. Is it a must to rent a car or are we able to get away with taking public transport (such as buses, cab, or Ubers) aside from ferries between islands.

Appreciate any insights!

Hey, you should have no issues without a car and you can easily get from one island to another with a ferry. And on the islands you can find local taxi providers and arrange prices with them, usually apartment owners etc. have contacts for the taxis and can provide their favorite. To explore around Split and Dubrovnik you can easily use public transport only on Korcula you will have to rely more on local taxis or renting a car on the island as most popular sandy beach is Lumbarda which is not in walking distance but there is a bus running on the island just not as frequently.

While on the island I rented a scooter to more easily explore the island, check some guides below for more info. Also for other locations I would suggest to check this Croatia Travel Tips FAQ

By having a car you can explore more but I think you will be fine if you plan on having a more relaxing holiday and you can still sightsee. Here are some best day trips from Split 8 BEST DAY Trips from Split (Guide) By Bus or Car
