Key West is a small, charming island at the very end of Florida, and one of the most popular spots to visit in the state. The best part is that it’s super easy to get around without a car. We’ve visited a few times so this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to plan your trip and enjoy Key West car-free!

WHY YOU DON’T NEED A CAR IN KEY WEST

Key West is a really small island, so there’s no real need for a car. The island itself is only about 4 miles long and 1 mile wide at its widest point, which means you can literally walk from one side to the other in just a couple of hours. If you’re on a bike, you can do it in around 30 minutes!

With that in mind, you won’t really use a car once you’re there. If you already have one, you can just drive to Key West (here’s a road trip guide!), park it, and leave it for your stay. But if you’re thinking of renting a car just for Key West, it’s really not necessary because there are much easier ways to get around the island and finding parking can be impossible.

GETTING TO KEY WEST WITHOUT A CAR

If you’re not driving, it’s still really easy to get to Key West since it’s such a popular and well-connected destination. From Miami, you can grab a shuttle bus, join a guided tour, or book a private transfer that takes you straight there.

You can also fly in, as Key West has flight connections with several U.S. cities, including Miami, Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Orlando, Tampa, and more. Another fun option is the ferry, which runs from Fort Myers Beach and Marco Island (both not far from Naples, FL).

So no matter where you’re coming from, you’ll find a way to reach Key West without a car!

GETTING AROUND KEY WEST WITHOUT A CAR

Getting around Key West is super easy, and you really don’t need a car. If you enjoy walking, you can explore the whole island on foot. Since it’s small, having 2 or more days is more than enough to see everything just by strolling around.

If walking long distances isn’t for you, you can use the Duval Loop. It’s a public bus that runs through Old Town and passes by most of the major landmarks. A day pass is just $4, and since it runs every 30 minutes, it’s a great way to get around without much effort. You can also use the Hop-On Hop-Off trolley or the famous Conch train to get you around the town!

For something more fun and active, you can rent a bike, scooter, or golf cart. All three are fantastic ways to explore Key West in a different way. Personally, we love biking there because it’s scenic and easy, but scooters and golf carts are also really popular if you want something a little different. Rental shops are everywhere, so you’ll have no problem finding one. We rented our bikes at SunShine Scooters, since they rent scooters, bikes and golf carts. Our bikes were $47 for 24 hours and we loved them!

BEST NEIGBOURHOODS TO STAY IN WITHOUT A CAR

We stayed in Parrot Key, a gorgeous resort outside the old town. It’s quite a walk if you stay there, but really easy if you’re renting a bike. They also have a shuttle that takes you to the old town. However, these are the best neighborhoods to stay in Key West if you want everything close by and super easy to reach.

OLD TOWN

This is the heart of Key West, and it’s full of historic homes, lovely B&Bs, and boutique hotels, so you’ll find a place to stay here really easily. You’ll be within walking distance of all the main landmarks like Duval Street, Ernest Hemingway House, Mallory Square, and the Southernmost Point. The neighborhood has a lively atmosphere and you’ll even find some great nightlife options nearby.

DUVAL STREET

If you want to be right in the middle of the action, Duval Street is the place to stay. You’ll have nightlife, shops, bars, cafés, and all the main landmarks just steps away. It’s perfect if you like being surrounded by energy and buzz, but keep in mind it can get noisy at night. If you’d prefer something quieter, you’re better off staying in Old Town but a little further away from Duval.

BAHAMA VILLAGE

Bahama Village is a colorful and historic neighborhood with Caribbean roots, located just west of Duval. It’s a great option if you want something walkable but a little quieter than being right on Duval. The area is really authentic, with local boutiques, galleries, and some amazing food spots. Blue Heaven is right here and is a must for breakfast or lunch, and you’ll also be close to Fort Zachary Taylor State Park if you want some beach time. It’s a charming place to stay with lots of character.

ATTRACTIONS

Most of the main attractions in Key West are close together, so once you’re in Old Town, getting around is super simple. You’ll be able to see highlights like Duval Street, Mallory Square, the Southernmost Point Buoy, Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, the Key West Aquarium, and more without much effort. You can walk to all of them, or grab a bike or scooter if you prefer. RESTAURANTS AND BARS

Some of the best bars and restaurants are right in Old Town, so you won’t need a car to get to them, most are within a 10–15 minute walk. A few must-tries are Blue Heaven (famous for breakfast and Key lime pie), Sloppy Joe’s (a lively bar tied to Ernest Hemingway with great conch fritters), El Siboney (amazing Cuban food), and Conch Republic Seafood Company (perfect for fresh seafood by the water). Of course, there are plenty of other spots you’ll stumble across just by wandering through Old Town.

DAY TRIPS AND EXCURSIONS

Day trips and excursions are super easy in Key West, and you don’t need a car for them. Most tours leave straight from Old Town and drop you back there, so it’s really convenient. Some of the most popular ones are trips to Dry Tortugas National Park, snorkeling tours, sunset cruises, and dolphin watching tours. You can also book a transfer or bus to Key Largo, which is another amazing spot for snorkeling.
