If you’re visiting Slavonia and looking for an easy day trip, here’s how to spend one day in Slavonski Brod!

Slavonski Brod is a small but charming town in eastern Croatia and a great place to experience a more authentic side of the country. I’ve visited it a few times, and while I wouldn’t recommend coming to Slavonia just for Slavonski Brod, it’s definitely worth adding to your itinerary if you’re already exploring the region. Keep reading to find out my favourite things to do in one day in Slavonski Brod!

WHERE IS SLAVONSKI BROD

Slavonski Brod is a charming town in eastern Croatia, located on the Sava River, right on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. It’s about halfway between Zagreb and Osijek, so it’s an easy stop if you’re exploring Slavonia. The town is known for its rich history, relaxed atmosphere, and strong Slavonian traditions, and it will give you a chance to experience a more authentic side of Croatia.

IS SLAVONSKI BROD WORTH VISITING

Slavonski Brod is definitely worth visiting if you’re already in the area and looking for a destination with history, local culture, and a slower pace of life. I wouldn’t recommend skipping the Croatian coast just to come here, but if you’re exploring Slavonia and Baranja, it’s definitely worth adding to your itinerary.

As a local Slavonian, I can tell you that this region is one of the most welcoming parts of Croatia. If you’re looking for a slower, more authentic travel experience away from the crowds, I’m sure you’ll enjoy both Slavonski Brod and the rest of Slavonia.

WHAT TO DO AND SEE IN ONE DAY IN SLAVONSKI BROD

VISIT THE BROD FORTRESS

The Brod Fortress is the most important historical landmark in Slavonski Brod, and it’s a place you really shouldn’t miss. It was built in the 18th century by the Habsburg Monarchy as a defence against Ottoman attacks and was once an important military complex. Today, it’s one of the town’s main attractions where you can explore the courtyards, visit the museum, and see different exhibitions and cultural events. This is my favourite place in Slavonski Brod, so make sure to add it to your list!

EXPLORE THE CITY CENTRE

Slavonski Brod doesn’t have a huge city centre, so it’s very easy to explore on foot. You’ll find a mix of historic buildings, cafés, shops, and local landmarks while walking around the town. Make sure to check out Korzo, the main street and square, as well as “Pijana Ulica” or Drunk Street, which is known for its bars and nightlife. There are also a few museums you can visit, so you can easily spend an hour or two just strolling around and discovering the town.

WALK THE KEJ (SAVA PROMENADE)

If there’s one thing Slavonia does well, it’s riverside promenades. Most Slavonian towns are located along a river, and Slavonski Brod is no different. The Kej, or Sava River promenade, is one of the nicest places to experience in the town.

The promenade will give you beautiful views over the Sava River, and you can even look across to Bosnia and Herzegovina, which makes it quite unique. Locals come here to walk, cycle, meet friends, and enjoy sunsets, making it a really relaxing place to spend some time. We especially enjoyed walking from the city centre to Rafts Street along the Kej, and I’d definitely recommend it.

SEE RAFTS STREET

Rafts Street (or Splavarska ulica in Croatian) is one of the most unique and local places to visit in Slavonski Brod, so don’t miss it. It’s located along the Sava River and consists of a collection of floating houses built on traditional river rafts. Most of them are privately owned, but some are also available for rent, so if you’re looking for a unique place to stay, you might even find accommodation here!

VISIT IVANA BRLIC MAZURANIC HOUSE

The Ivana Brlic Mažuranic House is a museum dedicated to the life and work of one of Croatia’s most beloved writers. She was often called the “Croatian Andersen” because of her famous fairy tales, and Slavonski Brod played an important role in her life. By visiting her house, you can learn more about her stories, family, and cultural influence. If you enjoy literature and Croatian history, this is definitely a place worth visiting!

GO FOR LUNCH AT RAMARIN 

After all the exploring, drive to the perfect place for lunch, Ramarin. Ramarin is much more than just a restaurant, but its food is definitely one of the highlights. It’s a great place to try traditional Slavonian flavours, enjoy local ingredients, and take a relaxing break from sightseeing.

I highly recommend starting with their elderflower rakija and trying dishes like pulled pork dumplings, pork crackling pâté, and risotto with wild mushrooms and bacon. Everything we tried there was absolutely delicious. Since Ramarin offers many activities and amenities, you can easily spend the rest of your afternoon there. However, if you’re visiting during summer, you can leave and finish your day by relaxing on a beach!

VISIT POLOJ, THE MAIN BEACH OF SLAVONSKI BROD

Poloj is Slavonski Brod’s favourite summer escape and the town’s main beach along the Sava River. It’s obviously not the Adriatic Sea, but for an inland destination, it’s a really great place to enjoy summer. Locals come here to swim, sunbathe, play sports, and spend time outdoors. We didn’t have enough time for a swim, but we did stop for a drink at Sidro Café Bar and really enjoyed the views and relaxed atmosphere. It’s definitely a lovely place to finish your one day in Slavonski Brod during the warmer months!

It’s easy to spend one day in Slavonski Brod and see most of what the town has to offer. It may not be one of Croatia’s most famous destinations, but that is exactly what makes it special. Here, you can slow down, explore at your own pace, and enjoy a more relaxed side of Croatia without crowds. I highly recommend visiting the Brod Fortress, walking around the city centre, having lunch at Ramarin, and finishing your day at Poloj, either for a swim in summer or just some relaxing time by the river.
