CROATIA DESTINATIONS
Croatia has so many destinations you shouldn’t miss. While the long, beautiful coastline is full of lovely cities and small towns, inland Croatia is just as charming and worth exploring. I’ve divided the country into four regions, Dalmatia, Kvarner, Istria, and Inland Croatia, to help you discover them all.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
What types of destinations can you find in Croatia?
Croatia has many different types of destinations, so it’s easy to find something you’ll love. You can visit sunny coastal towns, beautiful islands, quiet countryside, and wonderful national parks, all in one country. Croatia also has historic places, charming old towns, and lively modern cities. Because everything is fairly close together, you can see many of them in one trip!
Is Croatia better for coastal or inland destinations?
Croatia is more famous for coastal destinations, but inland Croatia is also nice to visit. The coast has beaches, clear water, and old towns, which is why many people go there first. Inland Croatia is calmer, with nature, small villages, and local food. Many travellers enjoy visiting both the coast and inland areas on the same trip. As someone who has lived in inland Croatia my whole life, I can say there is plenty to see here too. While the coast is beautiful, it is not everything!
What are the most popular regions to visit in Croatia?
The most popular regions to visit in Croatia are mostly along the coast. Dalmatia is well known for its beaches, islands, and old towns. Istria is popular for good food, small towns, and slow travel. Kvarner gives you islands, mountains, and seaside places. Inland areas like Central Croatia and Slavonia are quieter and known for nature, history, and local traditions. As a local that’s been everywhere, I can tell you each region is worth visiting!
What destinations in Croatia are best for nature lovers?
Croatia is full of amazing places for nature lovers. Obviously, Plitvice Lakes National Park is the most famous for its waterfalls and lakes, and Krka National Park is also great for rivers and waterfalls. The Paklenica and Velebit mountains are perfect for hiking. Islands like Brijuni and Mljet have quiet forests and nature trails. Even inland areas, like Slavonia, have peaceful rivers, forests, and countryside to explore. I am personally a huge fan of Plitvice Lakes and Brijuni!
Are Croatia destinations good for slow travel?
Yes! Croatia is great for slow travel. Many destinations, especially inland towns, islands, and coastal villages, are perfect for taking your time to explore. You can enjoy beaches, walk through historic streets, taste local food and wine, or relax in nature without rushing. I personally love Istria for slow travel, since you get both inland towns and coastal ones, as well as plenty of beaches and a lot of beautiful nature. If you want to visit Dalmatia, I’d recommend an island for slow travel, such as Brac or Vis.
Are Croatia destinations expensive?
Croatia can be both affordable and pricey, depending on where and when you visit. Inland towns and smaller villages are usually cheaper, with lower prices for food, accommodation, and activities. Coastal areas and islands, especially in summer, can be more expensive, with higher costs for hotels, restaurants, and ferries. Traveling in the shoulder season (spring or fall) is a good way to enjoy Croatia without spending too much. I love travelling in May and September!
How many destinations should you include in a Croatia itinerary?
It depends on how much time you have and your travel style. For a short trip (5–7 days), 2–3 destinations are enough. Maybe one city, one island, and a national park. For a longer trip (10–14 days), you can include 4–6 destinations. The key is to avoid rushing so you can really enjoy each place. Ideally, I’d suggest no more than 4 destinations even for a 10-day trips, especially if you like slower travel and want to enjoy the beaches.
Are there lesser-known or emerging destinations in Croatia?
Yes! Croatia has many hidden gems worth visiting. Inland areas, like Slavonia and Gorski Kotar, have beautiful nature, small villages, and local traditions. Some islands, like Vis, Solta, and Lastovo, are quiet and less crowded. These places are perfect if you want a slower, more authentic experience.
What destinations in Croatia are good for island experiences?
Croatia has many great destinations for island experiences. Hvar is popular for beaches, nightlife, and charming towns. Brac is known for its beautiful Zlatni Rat beach. Korcula has historic streets and quiet spots. Vis and Lastovo are more remote and peaceful, perfect for nature lovers. Even smaller islands, like Solta or Mljet, offer calm beaches, forests, and local culture. I am a big fan of Brac and Korcula, and even Lopud island if you want something really slow and calm.
What destinations in Croatia are best for families?
Croatia has many family-friendly destinations. Dubrovnik and Split are great for easy walks, historic sites, and beaches nearby. Islands like Brac and Hvar have calm beaches and safe swimming spots. Istria is great for kids, with small towns, nature parks, and fun food experiences. Plitvice Lakes and Krka National Park are perfect for exploring waterfalls and trails together. All of these destinations can be enjoyed as a family!
