Along with stunning nature, Croatia is home to historic cities like Dubrovnik, Split, and Zadar, which are a must-see!
You can reach Croatia easily from almost anywhere in the world. There are many direct flights to Zagreb, Split, and Dubrovnik from all over Europe, and there are even a few direct flights from the US as well.
The biggest airport is in Zagreb, the capital city of Croatia. From there, you can easily reach any part of the country by plane, bus, or a car. There are also airports in Zadar, Split, Dubrovnik, and Rijeka.

WHY VISIT CROATIA
Croatia is so stunning that it truly deserves a spot on every traveler’s bucket list. If you’ve ever wondered whether it’s worth a visit, I can assure you that it absolutely is—and not just because I live here! Croatia is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates breathtaking nature, rich history, and Mediterranean charm. Here are a few reasons why I highly recommend visiting Croatia:
Firstly, the main reason is definitely the breathtaking coastline and all the gorgeous islands. Croatia is home to over 1,000 islands, and while not all of them are inhabited, many of them will absolutely blow you away. Some of the most popular islands, known for their stunning nature, historic old towns, and crystal-clear waters, include Hvar, Korčula, Brač, Mljet, and Vis. Be sure to include at least a few of them in your itinerary!

Secondly, Croatia’s historic old towns are second to none. Several of them are included in the UNESCO-World Heritage list, such as Dubrovnik, Split, and Trogir. They have incredible medieval walls, palaces, and Roman ruins. If you’re a history buff or just enjoy seeing historical old towns, Croatia will sweep you off your feet.
Next, if you’re a nature lover, you’re in for a treat because Croatia has some absolutely amazing national parks! The most famous ones are Plitvice Lakes and Krka, where you’ll find stunning waterfalls, turquoise lakes, and scenic trails that look unreal. Brijuni and Mljet are also amazing picks, each with its own unique charm and breathtaking landscapes. You must visit at least one of them!
Finally, if you’re into adventure and adrenaline, Croatia has plenty to offer! Whether you want to sail, hike, dive, raft, snorkel, or try something completely new, you’ll find many opportunities along the coast.

WHERE TO STAY IN CROATIA
Croatia has plenty of amazing cities to stay in, and no matter where you choose, you won’t be disappointed. The best spot for you really depends on what kind of trip you’re planning. If you want a single home base for your entire stay, you’ll likely choose a different city than if you’re planning to hop from town to town. Either way, there’s no wrong choice! Here are some of my favorite towns and why you should stay in them:
If you’re all about history and culture,Dubrovnik, Zadar, or Trogir are perfect choices.
For an unforgettable nightlife scene, head to Split, Hvar, or Pag.
If stunning beaches are your priority, stay along the Makarska Riviera—Omiš, Makarska, Tučepi, and Brela won’t disappoint.
For island hopping adventures, Split or Trogir make great bases.
If you want to fully embrace island life, consider staying on Korčula, Vis, Brač, or Hvar.

HOW MANY DAYS IN CROATIA IS ENOUGH
Any amount of time in Croatia will be magical, but to really experience the country, I’d say 7-10 days is the minimum. If you’ve got less than 7 days, I recommend focusing on just one region—like southern or central Dalmatia, or Istria—and exploring that area in depth.
With 7-10 days, you can definitely visit the most important towns and landmarks in Croatia, but if you want to really take your time and explore the whole coast, two weeks would be ideal. Here’s a quick overview of how I’d plan my itinerary if I had 5, 7, or 10 days to explore.

IF YOU HAVE 5 DAYS IN CROATIA, CHOOSE WISELY WHERE TO GO
You definitely can’t explore all of Croatia in just five days, so it’s a good idea to make a list of your top spots and focus on one region that attracts you the most. Personally, I’d recommend choosing either Zagreb & Istria, or Dalmatia.
ZAGREB & ISTRIA
If you like charming small towns, great food, wine, and stunning nature and sea, visit Istria. Fly into Zagreb and spend your first day exploring the Croatian capital. On day two, take a day trip to Plitvice Lakes—trust me, no matter what else you plan, this iconic national park absolutely deserves a spot in your itinerary.
Finally, from Plitvice, go to Istria, where you can spend 3 days enjoying incredible food and wine, and exploring lovely towns such as Pula, Rovinj, Motovun, or Grožnjan. You can even visit another one of Croatia’s gorgeous national parks – Brijuni. Here’s a detailed 5-day itinerary for Zagreb, Plitvice Lakes and Istria which will greatly help you plan out your own!

DALMATIA
If you prefer historical landmarks, island hopping, and water activities, visit Dalmatia. Fly into Split and spend the day there. Explore the old town and the Diocletian’s Palace. Use your second day to island hop and visit magical Hvar Island. For the remaining 3 days, you have a couple of options: either visit Plitvice Lakes and then head further south, or go straight down the coast, stopping at Pelješac on the way to Dubrovnik.
Here’s a detailed itinerary for 5 days in Dalmatia. This itinerary is definitely packed, so if you prefer a more leisurely pace, feel free to skip whichever spots you think you’ll miss the least. Good luck with that decision!

IF YOU HAVE 7 DAYS IN CROATIA, EXPLORE DALMATIA IN MORE DETAIL
For a 7-day holiday, I’d recommend sticking to the Dalmatia itinerary above, but with two extra days to dive deeper into Split and Dubrovnik. This way you’ll be able to admire many of the historical sites and still have time to enjoy the Adriatic Sea. There’s no need to rush from one place to another every day. You can also easily add Krka National Park to your itinerary and explore both Plitvice and Krka at a more leisurely pace. Here’s my itinerary for the perfect 7 days in Croatia—feel free to adapt it to fit your own preferences!

IF YOU HAVE 10 DAYS IN CROATIA, DO A QUICK TOUR OF THE COUNTRY
10 days is enough to see almost every key spot in Croatia, but be prepared for an active holiday—there’s a lot to pack in! If you have 10 days, fly into Zagreb and start your Croatian holiday in the capital. 2 days are enough for Zagreb, where you’ll get to explore its old town, many stunning parks, and the lively city center. From Zagreb continue to Istria, where you can spend 2 days exploring Rovinj, Pula, and Motovun.
After these magical towns, go and visit Croatia’s most stunning national park – Plitvice Lakes. These breathtaking waterfalls are the perfect stop on your way to Dalmatia. Once you’re in Split, spend a day exploring its historic center, then hop on a ferry to Hvar. If you’re looking for a more relaxed vibe, you could spend your second day lounging on the beach in Split. But personally, I’d rather explore Hvar because it’s definitely worth the trip!

On day eight, find your way to Dubrovnik where you can spend the remaining 3 days. While you’re there, explore the old town, mount Srđ, gorgeous beaches, and surrounding islands. I would highly recommend visiting Lopud, an island only an hour away from Dubrovnik. Make sure you fly out of Dubrovnik so you don’t have to drive back to Split. Here’s a complete 10-day itinerary written in detail to make it easy for you!
As you can tell, this itinerary isn’t a walk in the park. But trust me, you’ll get to experience some of the most magical parts of Croatia, and you definitely won’t be disappointed!
We ended up at a stop in Dubrovnik due to last minute cruise changes and it was one of our favorites. So beautiful! Has the tourist crowd found Croatia yet? Or does it still seem pretty peaceful?
