If you’re wondering how many days in Zagreb is enough, this blog post is for you!

I’ve lived in Zagreb for over 5 years, so trust me, you can see a lot of the city no matter how much time you have. Of course, your experience will be different if you’re just on a layover or have one day before heading to the coast, compared to spending three full days here. In this post, I’ll help you prioritize what to see depending on how much time you have in Zagreb!

WHERE IS ZAGREB

While Zagreb might not be the most visited city in Croatia, it certainly is the largest. Zagreb is the capital city of Croatia, and it is home to over 800,000 people. It is located in the northwestern part of the country and it has the biggest airport in the country. It’s extremely important to Croatia and it has been my home for 5 years now. Even though it’s not on the coast, I can tell you it’s still worth a visit.

WHY SHOULD YOU VISIT ZAGREB

Many people skip Zagreb in favor of great coastal destinations, and… I get it. If you have limited PTO, you probably want to spend it at the beach. However, Zagreb is a fantastic destination with a lot to offer, and you should plan to spend at least some time in the capital.

Here’s a short list of reasons why you shouldn’t skip Zagreb. Firstly, it has got a charming historic center. While it isn’t as stunning as those in Dubrovnik or Hvar, Zagreb’s old town is special in its own way. It’s divided into two parts – Upper and Lower Town, and it is home to many cobblestone streets, medieval buildings, many squares, and landmarks.

Secondly, it’s got plenty of things to do, especially if the weather is nice. Sunny weather invites you to explore Zagreb’s many gorgeous parks, while moody weather is perfect for visiting museums, cozy cafés, and other fun indoor activities when it rains in Zagreb.

Finally, the food is excellent in Zagreb, so that’s something you must try. There are several great local delicacies you should try, such as strukli, cevapi, and kremsnite. There are many great restaurants in Zagreb you can check out, but some of my favourites are Stari Kotac, Batak, Submarine, and Nokturno.

HOW MANY DAYS IN ZAGREB IS ENOUGH?

No matter how much time you have in Zagreb, make the most of it by exploring as much as possible. However, if I had to recommend you the perfect number of days, I’d say 2-3 days are perfect for leisurely seeing everything you need. It’s still possible to see Zagreb in a day, but having a few more days at your disposal would be great. However, if it’s going to cut into your time on the coast, I’d definitely spend less time in Zagreb and more on some dreamy island.

IF YOU ONLY HAVE ONE DAY IN ZAGREB, SPEND IT LIKE THIS…

One day in Zagreb will give you just enough time to explore the most interesting part of the city – the Upper and Lower Town.

The Upper Town is Zagreb’s old town and there are many landmarks worthy of visiting there. Some of the most popular include St. Mark’s Church, the Stone Gate, Lotrscak Tower, Strossmayer Promenade, St. Mark’s Square, Zagreb Cathedral, Dolac Market, and more. You can easily reach any of these landmarks on foot from Zagreb’s main square, Josip Jelačić Square.You can also have lunch or a drink in one of Zagreb’s most popular streets, Tkalciceva Street.

The Lower Town is home to more of Zagreb’s gems. First, there’s the main Josip Jelacic Square. From there, you can head to Ilica Street for shopping or relax at Zrinjevac Park. You can also grab a drink or a meal on Cvjetni Square, or stroll to the Croatian National Theatre not far from there.

IF YOU HAVE TWO DAYS IN ZAGREB, ADD THESE TO YOUR ITINERARY

If you have 2 days in Zagreb, use the second day to leave the city center and explore what’s in other parts of the city.

First, I highly recommend checking out some of Zagreb’s beautiful nature spots, like Maksimir Park or Jarun Lake. Maksimir Park is Zagreb’s biggest and most charming park, and it’s the perfect place for a relaxing walk, coffee with a view, or a visit to the ZOO. Jarun, on the other hand, is a big lake with excellent walkways around it, so you can spend a few hours walking, and then grab a coffee near the waterfront.

Later, return to the city center and explore the museums. Zagreb is home to some great traditional museums like the Mimara and Nikola Tesla Technical Museum, but there are also plenty of fun ones, such as the Museum of Chocolate, the HAHA Museum, the Museum of Illusions, the Hangover Museum, and more

IF YOU HAVE THREE DAYS IN ZAGREB, VENTURE OUT OF TOWN

Finally, if you have a third day, use it to get out of the city and explore the surroundings. There are 3 options I would highly recommend, and you can choose based on your preferences.

Your first option is Samobor. It’s a lovely small town only 20-30 minutes from Zagreb and it’s the perfect choice if you just want to escape the crowds of Zagreb and have a relaxing day. There’s not much to do in Samobor besides strolling around town and having some great desserts. It’s can be a quick 2–3-hour excursion for you. If you’d like to go and enjoy a lovely day on the coast, take a day trip to Opatija. Opatija is one of the most charming towns on the coast, and only 2 hours from Zagreb. You can have a lovely day exploring the town’s American Gardens, Lungomare promenade, and Villa Angiolina.  If it’s summer, you can even enjoy a few beaches and go for a quick swim. Finally, if you want to go out of Croatia and explore another country, Ljubljana in Slovenia is only an hour and a half away. Slovenia’s capital is absolutely lovely and it’s the perfect day trip in my opinion. Visit Prešernov Trg and the lovely embankments by the Ljubljanica river. MY PERSONAL TAKE – HOW MANY DAYS IN ZAGREB IS ENOUGH?

If you’re just adding Zagreb to a broader Croatia itinerary, one day is usually enough, two at most, especially if you don’t want to take time away from the coast. While I love Zagreb, it really can’t compete with the stunning beaches and seaside towns. If you’re coming specifically for Zagreb, then plan two full days in the city, plus extra days if you want to do some day trips nearby!
