WHERE’S MIAMI BEACH?

Miami Beach is an island in southeastern Florida, connected to the city of Miami by several causeways. It’s not part of Miami, but most people see the two as one. It’s known for its famous South Beach area, lively nightlife, and unique Art Deco architecture. There’s also a blend of Latin American, Caribbean, and American influences, so you can enjoy different art, food, music, and festivals. The climate offers warm weather year-round, but Miami Beach tends to be most visited during the winter months!

WHERE TO STAY IN MIAMI BEACH?

While visiting Miami, many people aren’t sure whether to stay in Miami or Miami Beach. If you’re one of them, read my detailed comparison guide on how to choose between the two, and which one is better for your stay.

I personally love staying in Miami Beach, and I’d recommend it over Miami any day. Miami Beach has several neighborhoods, each with its own distinct personality and worth exploring. It also feels more fun, relaxing, and enjoyable. Here’s a short overview to help you choose the best spot based on your budget and interests.

South Beach

South Beach is my favorite part of Miami Beach. It’s the liveliest neighborhood, famous for its Art Deco architecture, nightlife, and beach parties. This is the perfect place to stay if you’re young, enjoy going out, or if it’s your first time visiting. It can be quite pricey, but if you don’t mind not staying right on the waterfront, there are some good deals to be found!

Here are some great hotels you can stay at: 1 Hotel South Beach, Kimpton Angler’s Hotel South Beach by IHG, Esme Miami Beach

Mid-Beach

Mid-Beach is located between South Beach (the party scene) and North Beach (the quieter, more residential area). It’s known for its upscale resorts, trendy hotels, and a slightly calmer atmosphere than South Beach. It can be quite pricey, depending on how luxurious your hotel is, but it’s perfect for families, couples, and anyone who wants to relax in comfort and style.

The best hotels here are: Faena Hotel Miami Beach, The Miami Beach EDITION, Hotel Continental Miami Beach

North Beach

Finally, North Beach is more residential, laid-back, and family-friendly compared to South Beach and Mid-Beach. Here you’ll find a mix of mid-century modern architecture, quiet beaches, parks, and smaller local restaurants. Even during peak season, this part of Miami Beach is the most budget-friendly and calm, making it perfect for families, retirees, and visitors who want peace and relaxation.

10 GREAT THINGS TO DO IN MIAMI BEACH

SWIM AT SOUTH BEACH

You can’t say you’ve been to Miami Beach without swimming in the ocean. Swimming at South Beach is one of Miami’s most iconic experiences. This is the main beach in the South Beach neighborhood, famous for its white sand and lively atmosphere. Lifeguards are stationed in colorful Art Deco towers, and safety flags are posted daily to indicate surf conditions or jellyfish. The ocean is comfortable year-round, but mornings are usually calmer and less crowded than afternoons. Bring some food, drinks, and a pickleball set, and you’ll have the best few hours!

EXPLORE OCEAN DRIVE

Ocean Drive is the most famous street in Miami Beach, and it’s a place you have to explore. This street will give you some of the best architectural views, from pastel-colored Art Deco buildings, to neon lights and sidewalk cafés spilling onto the street.

During the day, you’ll see plenty of activity, from joggers and cyclists to tourists exploring landmarks like the Colony Hotel and the Versace Mansion. Just across the street, you can enjoy parks, walkways, and beautiful ocean views. At night, Ocean Drive comes alive with music, rooftop bars, and open-air restaurants. It’s the perfect spot for good food, delicious drinks, and a lively party atmosphere!

SHOP AT LINCOLN ROAD

If you like shopping, your favorite spot on Miami Beach will be Lincoln Road! Lincoln Road is like an open-air shopping mall, with luxury and high-street stores, street markets, dining, architecture, and culture all in one. It stretches over 8 blocks and is a pedestrian-only promenade. Even if you’re not into shopping, it’s still worth a visit. You’ll find art galleries, cafés, and restaurants with outdoor seating that are definitely worth checking out!

STROLL THROUGH ESPANOLA WAY

Espanola Way is a charming, historic street in Miami Beach that transports visitors to a Mediterranean-style village. It’s filled with colorful buildings, cobblestone streets, and a lively atmosphere. It’s located in South Beach, and here you’ll find cafés, restaurants, art galleries, and boutiques, all offering a mix of Spanish, Italian, and Latin cuisine and culture. In the evenings, it’s especially magical, with live music, street performers, and twinkling lights. It’s the perfect spot for strolling, dining, and people-watching. If you’re looking for a romantic dinner, Espanola Way is the place to go!

PLAY VOLLEYBALL

If you’re a sporty person, you’ll love Miami Beach. Playing volleyball on South Beach is a fun way to enjoy the sun and sand while socializing. The beach is lined with public volleyball courts, and it’s completely free. You can bring your own ball or join an existing game, depending on what you prefer and how many people are there. The sand is soft, and the ocean view makes it even better. You’ll also have a great time meeting new people if you join someone already playing!

TAKE A WALK DOWN SOUTH POINTE PIER

South Pointe Pier is one of the most scenic spots in Miami Beach, and if you enjoy walking, it’s a beautiful place for a stroll. It’s located at the southern tip of South Beach, within South Pointe Park. The park itself is stunning, and the pier stretches out into the water, making it perfect for walking, fishing, or just enjoying the ocean. You’ll get panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, Fisher Island, and the Miami skyline. It’s one of the best spots to catch the sunset, and it’s completely free.

RENT A BIKE

We loved being on bikes in Miami Beach! Renting a bike is one of the best ways to explore the coastline and lively neighborhoods at your own pace. The area is very bike-friendly, you can ride down most streets without worrying about safety, but the best spot is definitely the Miami Beach Boardwalk, which runs along the ocean and gives you stunning views of the beach, palm trees, and Art Deco hotels.

You can rent a bike for a few days, or use the CitiBike bike-share program. We tried the latter and really enjoyed it. There are CitiBike stations throughout South Beach, Lincoln Road, and many other locations, so you can pick up and drop off a bike almost anywhere. It’s a fun, affordable, and eco-friendly way to experience Miami Beach. If you want to ride a bike here, check out my guide to biking in Miami!

EAT TACOS AT DULCE VIDA

If there’s one thing you NEED to do from this list, it’s eat tacos at Dulce Vida. This restaurant changed my life. Miami Beach has plenty of fresh and flavorful Mexican food, but Dulce Vida really stands out. It’s known for its authentic dishes, and our absolute favorite were the Birria tacos. You can also try fish tacos, shrimp tacos, and vegetarian options, all paired perfectly with house-made salsas and guacamole. They’re not cheap, but the tacos are worth every penny. You’ll find Dulce Vida on 6th Street in South Beach.

TAKE PHOTOS WITH THE LIFEGUARD TOWERS

If you love a good photo for Instagram, the lifeguard towers on the beach are the perfect spot. There are 36 of them scattered throughout Miami Beach, and each one is unique. They come in different sizes and colors, making them a must-see photo opportunity. Whether you take your pictures at sunrise, sunset, or in the bright afternoon sun, the combination of sand, ocean, and these playful towers will make for a perfect photo and a memory you’ll cherish!

GO FOR A NIGHT OUT

If you like to party, a night out in Miami Beach is a must. It’s an unforgettable experience with unmatched energy and options. South Beach is the center of Miami Beach’s nightlife, with trendy nightclubs and amazing rooftop bars. In terms of music, you’ll find everything from electronic dance to Latin beats. If you’re not into partying but still enjoy a nice evening out, you can sip cocktails or dine at chic restaurants along Ocean Drive or Lincoln Road. Many bars and restaurants feature live music, DJs, and themed events, so you can pick what interests you and enjoy your night.

VISIT MIAMI BEACH BOTANICAL GARDEN

If you enjoy nature, visit the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. It’s a calm, green oasis located in South Beach. The garden spans over 2.6 acres and features a variety of tropical plants, native Florida flora, orchids, and colorful seasonal flowers. There are also beautiful paths, ponds, and a Japanese garden. It’s a great spot if you just want to stroll, take photos, and enjoy nature. Admission is free, and the garden is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 9 AM to 5 PM.
