THE BEST PHOTO SPOTS IN ROME
PHOTO SPOT 1 – THE TREVI FOUNTAIN
The most popular photo spot in Rome is the magnificent Trevi fountain, and that’s totally understandable. The fountain is glorious, and you just can pass up taking a photo with it. As many people think the same, there are always huge crowds around Trevi. If you want a nice photo without that many people around, you will have to sacrifice some sleep and wake up early. In the high season, there are already people queueing there at 6:30 a.m. so make sure you’re up early enough.
The best but also the most popular spot for taking photos at Trevi is the small wall on the right side of the fountain. It makes for amazing photos and even though it’s overused I would still recommend taking a photo there, but maybe give it your own spin with an amazing pose only you can do.

For something less seen, I recommend going to the left side of the fountain because it’s always somehow less crowded, but it’s equally beautiful. Sit or stand near the edge of the fountain for the best photos.
Plus! Make sure to come back during the evening to see the fountain illuminated but don’t count on some aesthetic photos as the fountain is SUPER crowded in the evenings (a couple of hundred people are always there).

PHOTO SPOT 2 – THE COLOSSEUM
Yes, the symbol of Rome is the perfect place for an Instagram photo. It’s also another one of the incredibly crowded spots that take some creativity to get a unique photo. Most people take pictures from Via Nicola Salvi and while they are beautiful, they are also everywhere.
But lucky for you, an incredible little gem is only a few steps from Via Nicola Salvi. If you turn your back to the Colosseum at Via Nicola Salvi and look to your right, you’ll see a small park on a hill.
The park is elevated so it gives you even better views of the Colosseum and many people do not know about it so there are no crowds at all. Keep in mind that it could be locked early in the morning and at night (In Rome the parks close at 9 p.m.).

PHOTO SPOT 3 – PANTHEON
The oldest church in Rome definitely gets a lot of love from tourists. It’s hard to find a way to get the whole building into the picture as it’s so massive, but the best way to do it is to play around with the fountain across the Pantheon and have Pantheon in the background.
Pantheon is incredibly popular, and people start queueing to enter from 8 a.m. so make sure you get to Pantheon earlier to avoid the swarms of people in your pictures.

PHOTO SPOT 4 – ALTAR OF THE FATHERLAND
The biggest building in Rome is a landmark you need to have in your pictures. There are a few spots to get a good picture and I recommend going to all of them.
The first one is on Piazza Venezia. In the middle of the massive roundabout, there is a small square with an incredible view of the Altar of the Fatherland. You can take incredible photos with the whole building in your frame! Currently, they’re building a metro station there so I’m not sure if this is still possible!

The second spot is on Via dei Fori Imperiali. The start of this beautiful road is closed off near the the Altar of the Fatherland so you’re able to take some amazing photos!
The third and final spot is at the top of the building. You won’t have the Altar of the Fatherland in the picture, but you can have an incredible view of Rome and the Colosseum in the background, which makes it worthy of climbing up that massive building.

PHOTO SPOT 5 – THE ROMAN FORUM
The Roman Forum is an incredible place full of history, but did you know you can take amazing pictures of it even if you haven’t bought a ticket? There are two viewpoints great for taking pictures of the ancient ruins at the Roman Forum. The first one is on Via dei Fori Imperiali, close to the Altar of the Fatherland.

The second one is near Capitoline Hill. Once you reach Capitoline Hill, on your right there will be a passage that leads you to an incredible view of the Roman Forum. My advice is to come really early to this viewpoint because once the sun is out it’s too bright to take a good picture.
+ PHOTO SPOT 6 – THE SPANISH STEPS
An additional location I love is Piazza di Spagna. There you’ll find the incredible Spanish steps – another landmark you need to take a picture of. Climb up the steps from the Piazza di Spagna and take some photos on the steps. Fun fact: it’s not allowed to sit on the steps but if you come early enough there aren’t that many policemen so you can sneak in a seat.

Oh, Rome! I was there just three weeks ago (for the second time) and I just love this city so so much!
Your photos are beautiful Karla + I adore your style! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Absolutely SAVING these! Rome is sooo picturesque and I’m always here for the photos
And here I am… wishing I had thought of these when I was last in Rome! 🙂
Your photos are so pretty and unique! I am so ready to go back to Rome already… it has been too long haha!
Love this so much. Great job!!
That’s interesting that you can’t sit on the Spanish steps. I wonder why that is? And I wonder what would happen if caught by the police.
I think it’s due to damaging the steps which are a very important landmark of Rome. The fines for sitting down on the Spanish steps and on the edge of the Trevi fountain go up to 400 Euros!!
There are so many great spots for photos in Rome. You did a great job of capturing some key sights with little people. I did not know you could not sit on the Spanish Steps since whenever we have visited the steps are full of lounging people!
Rome! It might just be one of my favorite European capitals (I like it more than Paris). Thank you for these photo spots; you look stunning on all the photos!
Perfect timing. I’m heading to Rome in the first week of November. I will try out some of these angles. Waking up early and beating the crowds, however, seems to be the best advice. I have yet to do that. Love your pics of the Pantheon with the fountain.
I wish I had found this post earlier! Thanks for sharing such great tips for Instagramable photos in Rome.
