MALAGA TO NERJA DAY TRIP: A ONE DAY ITINERARY

If you’re planning a Malaga to Nerja day trip, this one-day itinerary I’m giving you has got you covered!

We’ve visited Malaga a few times and absolutely love the town. Whenever we have extra time, we like to take a day trip to a smaller nearby town to explore more of Spain. Previously, we really enjoyed Marbella, but this last time we decided to visit Nerja, and it was absolutely stunning. Here’s how we spent our day and how you can plan your own Malaga to Nerja day trip!

WHERE IS NERJA

Nerja is a small town on the south coast of Spain, just east of Malaga. It’s right by the sea and it’s absolutely lovely. The town is full of pretty white buildings, small cafés, and local shops. It’s also home to some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen! Nerja is perfect if you want to enjoy the calmer side of southern Spain, and it’s less than an hour from Malaga.

HOW TO REACH NERJA FROM MALAGA

You can get from Malaga to Nerja in a few different ways. The easiest is by car. You just take the A-7 highway east from Malaga, and you’ll be in Nerja in about 45–60 minutes. It’s the fastest and most flexible option.

If you don’t have a car or don’t want to rent one, the bus is a great alternative. Local ALSA buses run regularly from Malaga bus station to Nerja. The trip takes around 1 hour 15 minutes, and tickets are pretty cheap, about €10 for a return. You can buy them online or at the bus station. We got ours online, which was really easy.

If you’re planning to visit the Nerja Caves, it’s best to buy a direct ticket from Malaga to the caves, then continue from the caves to Nerja town, and finally back to Malaga. This way, you’ll do less driving than going to the caves and back from Nerja itself.

IS NERJA WORTH VISITING

Nerja is definitely worth visiting. We didn’t really know much about it before this trip, and we’re so glad we did this day trip. It’s a small, charming town with whitewashed streets, lots of local restaurants and cafés, and really friendly, welcoming people. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy good food, amazing beaches, and plenty of sunshine. The pace of life is much slower and the atmosphere is just so relaxed and magical. On top of all that, Nerja has some really lovely attractions worth visiting, so overall, I’d say it’s a must-visit if you’re in southern Spain!

WHAT TO DO AND SEE IN NERJA

While Nerja is a small town and you can see most of it in just a few hours, there are still some incredible things to do and see here.

WALK AROUND THE OLD TOWN

The Spanish old towns are truly magical, and Nerja’s is no exception. You can stroll through its narrow streets, admire the white buildings, and explore the local shops and cafés. It’s quite similar to Marbella’s old town. While walking around, take a break for a coffee or snack, and be sure to pick up some souvenirs. Don’t miss historic buildings like the Church of El Salvador, small squares such as Plaza de España, and hidden corners with scenic viewpoints.

ENJOY THE VIEWS AT THE BALCONY OF EUROPE

When you’re in Nerja, the main attraction you must see is the Balcony of Europe. This is the town’s most famous viewpoint, located above the sea right in the heart of Nerja. From this terrace, you get stunning panoramic views of the Mediterranean, nearby beaches, and the surrounding coastline. It’s the perfect spot for photos or just enjoying the scenery. The promenade around the balcony is lined with cafés, restaurants, and street performers, so it’s very lively. Best of all, it’s completely free so you definitely can’t miss it!

VISIT THE NERJA CAVES

One place that completely blew us away was the Nerja Caves. These large caves feature impressive stalactites and prehistoric paintings, and they are one of the area’s most amazing natural attractions. They’re located just a few kilometers east of the town and can be reached easily from Nerja in about 10 minutes by taxi or bus. Entrance costs around €15 per person, and you’ll need roughly an hour to explore them. Here’s a detailed guide with everything you need to know before visiting the Nerja Caves!

GO TO THE BEACH

Once you’ve finished exploring the town, head to one of Nerja’s incredible beaches. There are so many beautiful options that choosing one might be harder than you think. I loved Calahonda Beach because it’s close to the town and the Balcony of Europe, and it’s absolutely stunning. If you prefer a bigger beach with full amenities, Burriana Beach is the most popular choice. I’ve put together a guide to the best Nerja beaches we visited, so check it out and enjoy an amazing beach day!

VISIT FRIGILIANA

If you’re not in the mood for the beach, make sure to visit Frigiliana. This nearby whitewashed village is often paired with a trip to Nerja. It’s famous for its narrow, winding streets, colorful flower pots, and traditional Andalusian architecture, very similar to Nerja itself. It’s on a hillside, so it offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside and the coast. Local buses run there frequently for just a few euros, so it’s an easy and worthwhile addition to your day trip!

MY PERSONAL TAKE ON A DAY TRIP FROM MALAGA TO NERJA

In short – an absolute MUST. And in a longer version, I honestly can’t recommend Nerja enough. It’s incredibly charming, and if you’re looking for a perfect holiday town, Nerja might just be it. We loved our day here and are already planning to come back.

I imagine it can get crowded in summer, but we’d love to return in September or October. Our visit was in late October, and we completely fell in love, so I’m sure you would too!

CONCLUSION: MALAGA TO NERJA DAY TRIP

Overall, this is one of the best day trips you can take from Malaga. I loved Nerja, especially its beaches. It’s a charming town with a calm atmosphere, and I’d definitely spend a few days here just to relax and enjoy the sea. Even if you only have one day, I highly recommend visiting Nerja!
