CRES ISLAND IN ONE DAY: GREAT THINGS TO DO ON CRES

If you’re looking for a quick day trip in the northern Adriatic, these are the best things to do on Cres in a day!

Cres is one of the less popular islands in Croatia, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth visiting. If you love nature, gorgeous sea, and relaxing atmosphere, Cres might be exactly what you need, even for just a day. As a local Croatian I try to explore as much of Croatia as I can, and Cres was such a pleasant surprise for me. It’s super easy to visit from a few different locations in Croatia, so keep reading this post to find out how to get there and what to do once you’re on the island!

WHERE IS CRES ISLAND

Cres Island is in the northern Adriatic Sea, located just south of Rijeka. It’s actually one of the largest Adriatic islands and it’s connected to Losinj by a bridge. That means you can easily visit both islands in one trip. Everyone loves Cres for its stunning nature, Lake Vrana, and beautiful beaches with crystal-clear sea. It’s not as developed as some other Croatian islands, so don’t expect it to be as fancy as Hvar or Korcula. However, it’s absolutely incredible if you love an active holiday in nature.

HOW TO REACH CRES ISLAND

BY FERRY

There are a few different ways to reach Cres Island, but since it’s an island, you’ll need to hop on a ferry no matter what. Depending on where you’re coming from or staying, there are two main ferry routes you can choose from.

First one is the ferry from Brestova to Porozina. This one is the best if you’re coming from somewhere in Istria, since Brestova is located on the Istrian Peninsula. The ferry ride to Porozina on Cres Island is short, only around 20 minutes, and the ticket for a car and two people is around 20 euros. Jadrolinija is the operator of this ferry route.

The second option is taking the ferry from Krk Island to Cres. If you’re coming from Zagreb, Rijeka, or anywhere further south, drive to Valbiska ferry port, which is connected to Merag on Cres. The ride is around 30 minutes and the ticket for a car and two people is around 30 euros.

BY CAR

The best way to reach the ferry is definitely by car. You can either drive to Brestova if you’re coming from Istria, or head to Valbiska on Krk and catch the ferry there. I’d really recommend having a car with you because Cres is a big island, and there’s plenty to see. The car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

 BY BUS

If you don’t have a car, you can still get to Cres by bus. There are buses from Rijeka and Zagreb that go to Cres town and a few other villages on the island. However, bus connections on Cres itself are pretty limited. If you come by bus, you’ll basically need to pick one town or village to stay in for the whole trip. That’s why I honestly think it’s much better to come by car! It gives you the freedom to explore properly.

IS CRES ISLAND WORTH VISITING?

Yes, Cres Island is definitely worth visiting, but don’t expect it to be super exciting. Cres is ideal if you’re a nature lover, because it’s all about beautiful beaches, peaceful hiking and cycling spots, and a really charming little old town. But just so you know, it’s much quieter and less touristy than islands like Hvar or Korcula. There’s not a ton going on in terms of nightlife or events, so if you’re after lively days and evenings, Cres might feel a bit too calm for your taste.

If you’re doing a day trip to Cres from Losinj or Krk, here’s how I would spend the perfect day on Cres Island!

Explore Cres Town

Cres Town is the biggest town on the island, though it’s not all that big. You can easily walk through it in about an hour, but it’s still a really lovely spot to explore. Stroll through the old town’s narrow stone streets, check out the charming Venetian architecture, and make sure to stop for a bite to eat by the marina. There are a few really nice restaurants with a great view!

Visit Valun

Valun is a picturesque fishing village not that far from Cres Town. There’s not a ton to do there, since the village is quite small. However, it’s the perfect spot to just sit down, grab a meal or a drink, and enjoy some of the prettiest views on the island. Valun is also known for its beaches, and there are two I would highly recommend checking out – Zdovica Beach and Raca Beach. Both are lovely pebbly beaches perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing.

Take a swim at Martinscica Beach

Finally, if you’re not in the mood for swimming at Valun’s beaches, make sure to check out Martinscica Beach. It’s one of the most beautiful spots on the island and totally worth a visit. The beach is pebbly and pretty peaceful, with just a few amenities nearby, so I’d recommend bringing everything you need for the day with you.

Unless you’re planning to hike and spend most of your time enjoying the sea, there aren’t too many things to do on Cres. However, the few attractions and experiences it does offer are absolutely worth it.

I really like Cres Town, and I think spending half a day wandering through its streets, waterfront, and cafés is one of the best things you can do on the island. I also love Valun for its charm, and the beaches around the island are genuinely magical. If you’re looking for a calm, relaxing island where you can slow down, enjoy nature, and escape the crowds, Cres is the perfect destination for you.
