HOW TO SPEND AMAZING 7 DAYS IN SLAVONIA AND BARANJA: THE ULTIMATE ITINERARY
If you’re looking for a different and truly authentic Croatian experience, you should spend 7 days in Slavonia and Baranja!
I’ve explored almost every corner of Croatia, and while the coast is obviously the most popular part of the country thanks to the incredible Adriatic Sea, eastern Croatia offers a completely different experience. As a local from this region, I can tell you that Slavonia and Baranja are some of the most authentic parts of Croatia, and spending a week here will show you a side of the country that many visitors never get to experience. Keep reading to find out how to have one of the most unique visits to Croatia!
WHERE ARE SLAVONIA AND BARANJA
Slavonia and Baranja are two beautiful regions in eastern Croatia, located close to the borders with Hungary, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. They offer a completely different side of Croatia compared to the popular coastal destinations.
Here, you can expect charming towns, beautiful vineyards, peaceful rivers, incredible nature, and some of the best food and wine in the country. While eastern Croatia doesn’t have the Adriatic Sea, it has everything you need for a relaxing and slow-paced holiday full of authentic experiences.

WHY VISIT SLAVONIA AND BARANJA
If you’re looking for authentic experiences, Slavonia and Baranja are exactly what you need. This part of Croatia is known for its warm hospitality, friendly locals, traditional villages, excellent wineries, and rich history.
You can explore beautiful nature and wildlife, visit historic castles, discover local wineries, and enjoy traditional dishes in family-run restaurants. The best part is that many places are still peaceful and without big crowds. Tourism here is much smaller, so you’ll often find yourself surrounded mostly by locals rather than tourists. This region offers a completely different experience from the Croatian coast.

WHERE TO STAY DURING YOUR 7 DAYS IN SLAVONIA AND BARANJA
For this itinerary, I recommend splitting your stay between two locations. This way, you won’t have to move around too much, but you also won’t spend hours driving back and forth every day.
Osijek is a great base for exploring the city, Baranja, Vukovar, and Ilok, as everything is within easy reach. If you prefer a more rural experience, staying in Baranja is also a great choice. There are many authentic countryside houses available for rent where you can truly experience the local way of life.
For your second stay, I highly recommend Ramarin. You can enjoy the beautiful estate, relax, try their food and activities, while also using it as a base to explore Slavonski Brod and Papuk.
My accommodation recommendations:
- HOTEL OSIJEK (central)
- HOTEL MATERRA (luxury)
- OPG Lola Kokica (really rural)
- ERDELJI HOUSE (where we stayed and LOVED it!)
- RAMARIN (where we stayed in Slavonski Brod and LOVED it!)

TIPS TO KNOW BEFORE SPENDING 7 DAYS IN SLAVONIA AND BARANJA
First of all, you’ll need to rent a car if you don’t have one. The easiest way to explore Slavonia and Baranja is by car because many wineries, villages, and natural attractions are difficult to reach by public transport. Also, some of the best moments happen while driving around, like seeing beautiful vineyards, endless fields, and sunflower landscapes. You truly won’t experience this region properly without a car.
Spring and autumn are wonderful times to visit because of the pleasant weather and beautiful scenery. Autumn is especially great because there are many local events where you can experience Slavonian traditions. However, summer is also a great option if you don’t mind warmer temperatures. The famous sunflower fields are at their most beautiful in July, so this is the best time to see them.
Most importantly, don’t rush from place to place. Slavonia and Baranja are made for slow travel, and the best part of visiting is enjoying the food, wine, and peaceful landscapes. Long lunches, drinks with beautiful views, and spontaneous drives through the countryside are exactly what make this region special.

HOW TO SPEND 7 DAYS IN SLAVONIA AND BARANJA
DAY 1: OSIJEK
I always suggest starting your trip in Osijek, the largest city in eastern Croatia. I might be a bit biased since it’s my hometown, but trust me, you’ll quickly fall in love with its charm. Start by exploring the city centre, where you can see the beautiful cathedral, squares, and parks. Afterwards, take a relaxed walk along the Drava River promenade all the way to Tvrda, Osijek’s historic old town.
In Tvrda, you can explore the old walls, historic buildings, and museums, or simply sit down for a drink at one of the most popular squares in the city. On your way back, walk along Europska Avenija, one of Osijek’s most beautiful streets, known for its stunning old buildings. One day is enough to see the main highlights of Osijek, and you can find my detailed one-day Osijek itinerary below.

DAY 2: BARANJA
Day two is when you start exploring Baranja. You’ll need at least two days to see the highlights of this region, and you could easily stay longer, but for this itinerary, we’ll focus on the main places over two full days.
Start your morning with a visit to Kopacki Rit Nature Park, one of Europe’s largest wetlands and a true paradise for birdwatchers. It’s one of the most unique nature experiences in Croatia, and you can explore the main highlights in around 2 hours, making it the perfect start to your day.
Continue your drive to Tikves Castle, which is part of Kopacki Rit Nature Park but located at another site. This beautiful historic castle was once used as a hunting residence by Josip Broz Tito, the former president of Yugoslavia. If you visit during summer, the drive there is even more special because you’ll pass through stunning sunflower fields, with plenty of opportunities to stop and take photos. If you feel up to it, explore Knezevi Vinogradi, Zmajevac, and other charming villages in Baranja.

Finish your day with late lunch or dinner and wine tasting at Josic Winery. This is one of the most famous and respected wineries in eastern Croatia, and both the food and wine are absolutely incredible. It’s a slightly more expensive experience, but trust me, it’s one of those places that is completely worth it.

DAY 3: BARANJA & ERDUT
Start your day with a visit to Banovo Brdo, the most famous wine road in Baranja. This area is home to the vineyards of Belje Winery, one of the most important wineries in eastern Croatia. The drive itself is beautiful, and on Banovo Brdo you’ll find a viewpoint where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy incredible views over the endless vineyards.

Afterwards, head for lunch at Baranjska Kuca, one of the best restaurants in Baranja. It’s much more than just a restaurant, it also has a small open-air museum called the “Street of Forgotten Times,” where you can see traditional houses, tools, and buildings that show what village life in Baranja looked like in the past. It’s a truly authentic local experience.

In the afternoon, make your way to Erdut. I know it’s slightly outside the way, but trust me, this recommendation is absolutely worth it. Here you’ll find Magistra Winery, a small family winery located right by the Danube River with some of the most beautiful sunset views in Croatia. Their picnic experience includes a bottle of wine and an incredible charcuterie board for two people for only €30. This was honestly one of the highlights of my whole trip, and I can’t recommend it enough.

DAY 4: VUKOVAR & ILOK
On day four, head east to explore Vukovar and Ilok. Vukovar is a city that tells one of the most important chapters of Croatia’s modern history, and a visit to eastern Croatia is not complete without experiencing this place. Spend the day exploring museums, memorial sites, and learning more about the city’s story before taking a peaceful walk along the Danube River.
Some of the most important places to visit are the Vukovar Memorial Cemetery, Ovcara Memorial Centre, and the famous Vukovar Water Tower. For a full list of must-see memorial sites, check out my Vukovar guide.

After Vukovar, continue to Ilok, Croatia’s easternmost town, and one of the most beautiful places in Slavonia. Known for its centuries-old wine tradition, medieval castle, and incredible views over the Danube, Ilok is one of the most charming towns in the region. Have lunch and visit the wine cellars at Stari Podrum, explore the old town, and finish your day with a drink at Principovac, where you’ll find some of the most stunning views in Slavonia.

DAY 5: ĐAKOVO
In the morning, pack up from your accommodation and drive to the charming town of Đakovo, one of the highlights of Slavonia. The town is best known for its impressive cathedral and world-famous Lipizzaner horses. Start your visit with St. Peter’s Cathedral, one of the most beautiful and impressive churches in Croatia. Afterwards, take a relaxed walk through the town centre and stop for lunch at Lipizzano Restaurant.
Later, visit the Đakovo Lipizzaner Stud Farm. The farm has two locations, one in Đakovo and another nearby called Ivandvor. We visited Ivandvor and absolutely loved the experience, as it gives you a chance to see these beautiful horses in a peaceful setting. After exploring Đakovo, continue your drive to Ramarin, where you can check in and spend the next day or two enjoying the estate, relaxing, and exploring the surrounding area.

DAY 6: RAMARIN & SLAVONSKI BROD
Begin your day at Ramarin, a peaceful countryside estate surrounded by nature. It’s one of my favourite places in this part of Croatia and the perfect place to continue your slow travel experience.
This family-run estate is all about rural luxury in Croatia. From their beautiful hotel and bungalows to their incredible restaurant and many activities, Ramarin is the kind of place where you’ll want to stay for a few days. I highly recommend staying in their hotel if you’re looking for a more luxurious experience, but their charming bungalows are also a great choice if you want something more authentic and connected to nature.

Start your morning with their breakfast made from local ingredients, then take some time to explore the estate. You can go horseback riding, play mini golf, or try padel before enjoying lunch at their amazing restaurant. Make sure to try some local dishes like pork crackling pâté, carp chips, pulled pork dumplings, and honestly any of their main dishes because the food is incredible.
In the afternoon, drive to Slavonski Brod to explore one of Croatia’s largest fortresses and discover the charming town centre. Walk through the squares, visit museums, and take a relaxing walk along the Sava River. Check out my Slavonski Brod guide for all the details. In the evening, return to Ramarin for dinner and spend some time relaxing in the spa at their hotel. Trust me, it’s the perfect way to end your day!

DAY 7: PAPUK
For your final day, wake up at Ramarin and continue your journey to Papuk Nature Park, Croatia’s first UNESCO Global Geopark. Get ready for a day in nature, because this is the perfect place to finish your Slavonia and Baranja trip.
Drive to Jankovac Forest Park, one of the most beautiful areas in Papuk. You can choose between a shorter walk or a longer hike, depending on your energy level, but at the very least, walk around the peaceful lake and visit the waterfall. The path down to the waterfall can be a bit tricky, but it’s manageable even if you’re not a very sporty person.
Stop at the mountain lodge for lunch and try their famous bean stew, it might honestly be the best you’ll ever have. Afterwards, you can continue exploring Papuk by car, visit the adrenaline park in nearby Velika, or, if you’re visiting during summer, finish your day with a swim at Orahovica Lake.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON SPENDING 7 DAYS IN SLAVONIA AND BARANJA
I already said I’m biased when it comes to this part of the country, but eastern Croatia will always have a special place in my heart. I absolutely love our coast, but I grew up here, and I truly want more people to see that Croatia is so much more than just the sea and famous destinations like Split, Hvar, and Dubrovnik.
Spending seven days in Slavonia and Baranja is the perfect way to experience a completely different side of Croatia. You’ll meet some of the friendliest people, enjoy incredible food and wine, explore beautiful nature, and create memories you won’t forget. I hope this itinerary helps you discover a part of Croatia that many visitors never get to experience!
