ELAPHITI ISLANDS TOUR FROM DUBROVNIK: A GUIDE & TOUR RECOMMENDATIONS

If you’re visiting Dubrovnik and want to add something special to your itinerary, definitely consider doing a tour of the Elaphiti Islands! Dubrovnik is beautiful, but after a while, you might want to explore beyond the city, and the Elaphiti Islands are the perfect escape. These islands are peaceful, charming, and full of natural beauty.

I’ve spent several summers on one of them (Lopud!), and it’s honestly one of my favourite places in all of Croatia. In this blog post, I’ll walk you through what makes the Elaphiti Islands so special, which tour to book, and what you can do and see on each of them!

WHERE ARE THE ELAPHITI ISLANDS

The Elaphiti Islands are a beautiful group of islands just off the coast of Dubrovnik. This archipelago has several smaller and bigger islands, but the three main islands are Kolocep, Lopud, and Sipan. Each of these islands offers something a little different, from quiet beaches and walking trails to charming villages and historic sites. That’s why it’s worth doing a tour and seeing all three of them. However, if you want to visit only one, the islands are easy to reach by ferry or boat, so they’re a perfect day trip if you’re staying in Dubrovnik. If you’re thinking of doing that, I’d highly recommend Lopud Island.

ARE THE ELAPHITI ISLANDS WORTH VISITING?

The Elaphiti Islands are definitely worth visiting, especially if you’re looking to escape the crowds of Dubrovnik for a day. They are easy to reach, whether that’s by ferry or by boat tour, and offer natural beauty, quiet beaches, and authentic Croatian charm. Each of the main islands has a special reason why you should visit. Lopud has lovely sandy beaches, Sipan has olive groves and a really rustic vibe, while Kolocep has scenic walking trails and turquoise coves.

ELAPHITI ISLANDS BOAT TOUR WITH LUNCH INCLUDED

There are plenty of boat tours that offer a full-day trip from Dubrovnik to the Elaphiti Islands, and they’re a great value for what’s included. These group tours are usually quite affordable and typically visit at least two, often all three, of the main islands. Most tours include lunch on board, and the whole experience lasts around 8 to 9 hours. You’ll have enough time to wander through charming villages, relax on the beaches, and even explore a few caves along the way.

AN ELAPHITI ISLANDS BOAT TOUR ON A GALLEON SHIP

One of the more unique ways to experience the Elaphiti Islands is by booking a tour on a replica of a 16th-century galleon ship. There are two of these beautiful ships in Dubrovnik, Karaka and Tirena, and you can take a full-day trip on either. Sailing on one of these historic replicas is such a memorable experience, and it really adds something special to your island-hopping day. A PRIVATE ELAPHITI ISLANDS BOAT TOUR

If it fits your budget, exploring the Elaphiti Islands on a private tour is definitely the most flexible and comfortable way to go. These tours are usually done by speedboat, which means you can get around quicker and customize your itinerary, so more time on the islands or beaches you like best. While private tours are a bit more expensive, if you’re traveling with a group and splitting the cost, it often works out to be a great value for the experience you get!

WHAT TO DO AND SEE ON THE ELAPHITI ISLANDS

There’s plenty to do and see on the Elaphiti Islands, especially if you’re into nature, history, and a laid-back atmosphere.

KOLOCEP

Kolocep is the smallest of the three islands, but there’s still plenty to enjoy while you’re there. It’s completely car-free, so right away it feels more peaceful and relaxing than many other destinations. Once you arrive, make sure to visit the two main villages, Donje Celo and Gornje Celo. They’re small, traditional, and full of charm, with stone houses, a few bars, and great spots for lunch.

Since there are no cars, it’s perfect for walking. You can follow scenic coastal trails through pine forests and along cliffs with incredible views. One of the highlights is the blue cave. If you’re up for the walk, it’s absolutely worth it, and you can swim or snorkel in the crystal-clear water. Some boat tours even stop right at the cave if you’d prefer to go that route. If you’ve got extra time, just relax on the beach near the Kolocep port, it’s peaceful and offers some amazing sea views.

LOPUD

Lopud is definitely my favorite of the three Elaphiti Islands. Like Kolocep, it’s also car-free, which makes it feel incredibly peaceful. It’s the kind of place where you can truly relax, enjoy some beautiful beaches, and eat really well.

As soon as you arrive, you’ll notice the Franciscan Monastery and the Church of Our Lady of the Cave. These are the island’s main landmarks and well worth a visit. After that, take some time to stroll through the village. You’ll find a few great restaurants like Dubrovnik and Obala, cute souvenir shops like Perla, and plenty of cafes and bars where you can take a break and enjoy the atmosphere.

On your way to Sunj Beach, don’t miss the Botanical Gardens. They’re small but have a surprising variety of exotic plants. It’s also completely free! Sunj Beach is on the other side of the island, so you can either walk there or hop on a golf cart for 3 euros. Once you get there, enjoy the beautiful sandy beach with clear, shallow water, and several beach bars and restaurants where you can grab a bite or a drink.

SIPAN

Finally, Šipan is the last and furthest of the three islands from Dubrovnik. Unlike the other two, Sipan isn’t car-free, but because it’s pretty remote, there’s hardly any traffic at all.

There’s not a lot going on here, which makes it the perfect spot to just relax. When you arrive, be sure to explore Sudurad, the village where the ferry or boat will drop you off. It’s a charming place with lovely houses and a small harbor. One must-see is the stunning Skocibuha summer residence. It’s truly one of a kind and rich in history. After that, take some time to wander through olive groves, vineyards, and peaceful paths, and of course, enjoy the beautiful sea views.

If you’re on a private boat tour and have a bit more to spend, consider booking a cabana at Bowa restaurant. It’s one of the most stunning and luxurious spots in the region, right there on Sipan.

The Elaphiti Islands are absolutely magical and the perfect escape from the crowds of Dubrovnik. If you don’t want to choose just one island, tours that visit all three main islands are incredibly popular, and honestly, you can’t go wrong with them. They’re a great way to get a taste of everything the Elaphiti Islands have to offer.

If you’d rather spend a more relaxed day on a single island, I highly recommend Lopud. I know I’m a little biased, but it genuinely feels like heaven on Earth to me. Between the beautiful beaches, crystal-clear sea, charming village, and laid-back atmosphere, it’s the kind of place that’s very easy to fall in love with. I’d honestly hate for you to be this close to it and not experience it for yourself!
