While Croatia is home to many amazing islands, the most famous ones can get quite crowded, especially during summer. Losinj, on the other hand, is more relaxed with fewer tourists, so it’s an ideal choice if you want a peaceful getaway with authentic Croatian charm.

WHERE IS LOSINJ ISLAND
Losinj is a Croatian island located in the northern Adriatic Sea, just south of the city of Rijeka. The island is about 33 kilometers long and while it’s not as famous as some other Croatian islands, it’s truly something special. It’s connected to the nearby island of Cres by a small bridge at the town of Osor, so you can easily explore both islands in one visit.
The main town, Mali Losinj, is especially charming with its colorful harbor and laid-back atmosphere. This island is definitely more about immersing yourself in nature, so whether you’re into sailing, hiking, or just soaking up the sun, Losinj is the perfect peaceful getaway. On this island, you can truly slow down, breathe, and enjoy the beauty of nature around you.
HOW TO REACH LOSINJ ISLAND
There are a few different ways to reach Losinj Island, depending on where you’re coming from and how you prefer to travel. While I highly recommend going by car, here are also some other common and convenient options to get to Losinj.
BY CAR AND FERRY
Driving is hands-down the best way to explore Croatia, and that absolutely includes Losinj. Having your own car gives you the freedom to explore all the hidden coves, charming towns, and scenic viewpoints that you’d otherwise miss, and there are plenty on Losinj.
To get to Losinj by car, the most common route is to drive to Valbiska ferry port on Krk Island. From there, you’ll take a 25-minute ferry to Merag on Cres Island. Once you’re on Cres, it’s a beautiful 66 km drive down to Losinj.
If you’re based closer to Pula or Istria, the easier option might be to drive to Brestova ferry port, take a 20-minute ferry to Porozina on Cres, and then drive about 83 km south to Losinj.
Honestly, I can’t recommend this option enough. Losinj is stunning, but it’s also spread out. Having a car makes it so much easier to discover everything, from quiet beaches to small villages and forested hiking trails.
BY BUS
If you don’t have a car, no worries. You can get to Losinj quite easily by bus. Several buses run to the island daily, and they’re comfortable and reliable.
From Rijeka, buses to Mali Losinj take around 3 hours and 45 minutes, and the journey includes the scenic ferry ride from Brestova to Porozina on Cres Island. If you’re coming from Zagreb, the trip takes about 6 hours total. You can book your tickets on Arriva.
It’s definitely a longer journey compared to driving, but it’s a great option if you want to sit back, relax, and enjoy the views without worrying about navigating or parking.
BY CATAMARAN
Ferries and catamarans are a great way to enjoy the Adriatic and island-hop, and Losinj is well connected by sea. There are several routes departing from Rijeka, Zadar, and Pula, and you can check schedules and book tickets easily through Jadrolinija and Krilo, the main ferry operators in Croatia.
If you’re already vacationing in Italy and thinking about a quick getaway to Croatia, you’re in luck! During the summer season, there are ferries that connect ports like Trieste, Pesaro, and Cesenatico directly to Losinj, so it’s super convenient to hop over and explore this beautiful island.
BY PLANE
Losinj does have its own small airport that offers seasonal flights from a few cities, including Zagreb, Venice, and Lugano. So if you’re starting from one of those cities (or nearby), this could be the most direct and convenient way to reach the island.
If you’re not near any of those departure points, a great alternative is to fly into Rijeka Airport, which is located on Krk Island. From there, you’ll drive to the Valbiska ferry port, take a ferry to Cres, and continue on to Losinj by car or bus.
WHEN TO VISIT LOSINJ ISLAND
The best time to visit Losinj Island really depends on what you’re looking for in your trip. Luckily, Losinj is beautiful year-round, and each season offers something unique. Here’s a quick seasonal breakdown to help you decide:
Peak Summer Season – June to September
Summer is definitely the most popular time to visit Croatia, and that includes Losinj Island. If you’re after that classic summer holiday with swimming, sunbathing, sailing, and lively nightlife, then this is the perfect season for you.
The weather is usually warm and sunny, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to over 30°C, so it’s ideal for hitting the beach or enjoying the Adriatic by boat. The island really comes to life, with festivals, outdoor events, and a lively atmosphere in the towns and harbors.
That said, like the rest of the coast, summer is also the busiest season, and accommodation prices tend to be at their highest. However, one of the best things about Losinj is that, even in peak season, it’s never as crowded as places like Hvar or Korcula. You’ll still be able to enjoy the island’s charm without feeling overwhelmed by tourists.
Shoulder Season – May and October
The shoulder season is my absolute favorite time to visit Croatia and Losinj is especially lovely during this time.
May and October are amazing if you’re into hiking, biking, scenic walks, and exploring the island without the summer crowds. The weather is usually mild and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C, which is ideal for being outdoors all day.
That said, this isn’t the best time if your main goal is swimming or sunbathing. The sea can be a bit chilly, especially in early May or late October. But if you’re okay skipping the beach days in favor of peace, nature, and fewer tourists, it’s honestly a perfect time to go.
You’ll also have lower accommodation prices, and the island feels more authentic and peaceful. Just keep in mind that by late October, some seasonal businesses (like smaller restaurants or tourist services) may start closing down, especially in more remote spots. Ferry schedules may also be less frequent, so it’s worth checking those in advance if you’re not traveling by car.
Off-Season – November to April
While I wouldn’t personally choose the off-season as my top pick, it can still be magical for those looking for a truly calm and peaceful escape.
If you’re someone who enjoys quiet coastal walks, wellness retreats, or simply slowing down away from the crowds, this might be the perfect time for you. The weather ranges from 5°C to 15°C, so it’s definitely on the cooler side. It’s not great for swimming or beach time, but ideal for relaxation, reading, or cozying up in a quiet seaside spot. It can also be quite windy so come prepared.
Just be aware that during the off-season, ferry connections are more limited, and many restaurants, cafes, and attractions may be closed. So, you’ll need to plan ahead and possibly bring your own supplies or book accommodation with a kitchen.
IS LOSINJ ISLAND WORTH VISITING
Yes, Losinj Island is absolutely worth visiting. What makes Losinj special is its crystal-clear sea, pine forests, and fresh, clean air. Because of that, it’s a dream location for nature lovers, with hidden coves, stunning walking trails, and a real chance to spot dolphins in the wild.
The towns of Mali Losinj and Veli Losinj are absolutely charming, and you can enjoy them without the heavy crowds you’ll find on places like Hvar or Brac in peak season. It’s the kind of place where you can truly slow down and reconnect with nature.

Wander through Mali & Veli Losinj
The two most visited towns on the island are Mali Losinj and Veli Losinj, and you need to explore them!
Mali Losinj is the larger and livelier of the two. It has colorful buildings, a lovely waterfront lined with cafés, and a busy marina. It’s the kind of place where you can stroll, grab a coffee by the sea, and just soak in the island atmosphere.
Veli Losinj, on the other hand, feels like a hidden gem. It’s much smaller and quieter, but incredibly charming and artistic. The streets are narrow and winding, the buildings are beautifully preserved, and the whole town has a peaceful, almost romantic vibe. Neither place is very big, so you can easily explore both on foot!
Explore Cikat Bay
If you love discovering beautiful beaches, Cikat Bay near Mali Losinj is definitely one you shouldn’t miss. It’s one of the most scenic and popular spots on the island, and it’s famous for crystal-clear waters, pine forests, and luxury resorts.
There’s a main sandy beach that’s perfect for a beach day, but what makes Cikat really special is that you can wander along the coast and find smaller, quieter coves hidden among the trees. It’s a great place for swimming, paddleboarding, or just lounging at one of the beach bars with a drink in hand. If you’re after a laid-back day by the sea with plenty of natural beauty around you, Cikat Bay is the ideal choice.
Go Dolphin Watching
Losinj is probably the top spot in Croatia for dolphin sightings. There are plenty of boat tours that take you out into the open sea, where you can spend a few magical hours watching these incredible creatures in their natural habitat. It’s truly an unforgettable experience!
Indulge in some Wellness & Spa Treatments
Losinj is known as “the island of Vitality” thanks to its clean air and healing climate, so it’s a perfect spot for a wellness getaway. If you’re into spa relaxation, the spas at Hotel Bellevue and Vitality Hotel Punta are truly amazing. They’re the ideal places to relax and recharge after a few days of island exploring!
Explore hiking & cycling Trails
Losinj has incredible nature, so hiking and biking are great options if you love an active holiday. There’s over 250 km of marked trails for biking and hiking you can choose from. We went for an easy to moderate route, cycling from Mali Losinj along the coast to Cikat Bay. Renting bikes was super easy, and those couple of hours spent exploring the bay by bike were absolutely wonderful!
Take a Day Trip from Losinj Island to Cres Island
Losinj is connected to Cres Island by a small bridge, so Cres is a perfect spot for a relaxed day trip. Cres is charming and laid-back, with just the right amount to see and do for a casual day of exploring. The highlight is definitely the Old Town of Cres, which is small but full of character. It has lovely narrow streets lined by quaint shops and cozy local restaurants. After exploring, pick one of Cres’s beautiful beaches to enjoy. Some favorites on the island are the Valun beaches, Lubenice Beach, and Miholascica Beach.
