YOUR GO-TO TRAVEL TIPS FOR CROATIA

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the best time of year to travel around Croatia?
If you’re looking to avoid the crowds and keep it more budget-friendly, April, May, and October are the best months. If swimming and the sea are a priority, then June through September is the time to come. Here’s a full guide to help you decide when’s the best time to visit Croatia.
How can I avoid the tourist crowds in popular places like Dubrovnik and Split?
The only real way to avoid the crowds is to come in the off-season. If you’re here in summer, expect lots of people. The best you can do is visit less popular spots in the big towns and try to plan around cruise ship days.
Is it better to rent a car or rely on public transport in Croatia?
It really depends on the type of trip you want. If you want full flexibility, definitely rent a car, Croatia is best explored that way. But if you don’t drive or just don’t feel like renting, no worries, you can still see most of the country by bus and ferry.
Do I need cash, or are credit cards widely accepted?
You’ll need a bit of cash, but not a lot. Cards work almost everywhere (like 90% of the time), but for smaller bars, souvenir stands, or tipping at restaurants, it’s better to have some cash on you.
How expensive is Croatia compared to other European destinations?
Croatia is pretty expensive compared to most of its neighbors, but it’s still not pricier than places like Scandinavia. Since switching to the euro, costs have definitely gone up. Here’s a full cost breakdown so you’ll know exactly what to expect!
Are there any local customs or etiquette I should know about?
Be friendly, learn a few basic Croatian words, and don’t walk around old towns in just swimwear (it’s not allowed and locals don’t like it).
What’s the best way to travel between the islands?
Ferries! The main companies are Jadrolinija, TP Line, and Krilo. Always book directly with them, not third-party.
Is tap water safe to drink everywhere in Croatia?
Yes, it’s completely safe!
Are the beaches in Croatia sandy or rocky? should I bring water shoes?
Most beaches are rocky or pebbly, but you’ll find a few sandy ones here and there. Definitely bring water shoes, it makes things much more comfortable!
Do I need to tip in restaurants, and how much is customary?
It’s not mandatory, completely up to you. If the service is good, we usually leave around 10%, and of course you can always leave more if you want.
What’s the best way to handle ferries and boat tickets during peak season?
Book your tickets online in advance, directly on the ferry company’s website. For passenger ferries, come about 15–20 minutes early, and if you’re taking a car ferry, plan to be there at least an hour before.
Can I use Uber or ride-sharing services in Croatia?
Yes, you can use Uber and Bolt in all the major cities. I’d definitely recommend them over local taxis, since taxis here can sometimes be a bit scammy.
