KEY LARGO DOLPHIN EXPERIENCE: OUR DOLPHIN LIFE TOUR
If a Key Largo dolphin experience is on your wishlist for this trip, this blog post is for you!
While researching what to do on our way from Miami to Key West, we came across a few dolphin experiences that seemed perfect for a short stop along the way. We had several options, but in the end, we chose the organization Dolphin Life. It felt like the best fit for us, and we haven’t regretted it at all. If you want to experience an incredible encounter with dolphins, keep reading this post!

WHAT IS DOLPHIN LIFE?
Dolphin Life is a nonprofit organization based in Key Largo. They exist under this name from 2025, but they worked as Dolphin Plus for many years before. Dolphin Life is dedicated to improving the lives of dolphins and whales through ethical care, rescue, conservation, and education.
Along with incredible care of the dolphins, the organization helps connect people to marine life in a meaningful way, and through that fund conservation and rehabilitation work that protects dolphins and their ocean environment. They also have a Dolphin Life Hospital in Islamorada which just recently managed to get enough money to build a rehabilitation pool specifically for helping injured dolphins. You can also stop there and tour the hospital and the museum!

IS DOLPHIN LIFE ETHICAL?
Dolphin Life is generally seen as ethical because it operates as a nonprofit, focuses on animal welfare, and only cares for dolphins that cannot be released back into the wild. For these dolphins, living with human care is their only option for having a safe and healthy life. The dolphins live in natural seawater lagoons and take part in choice-based interactions, which means they are never forced to perform. The organization also supports rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation work.
Their tours are educational rather than focused on entertainment. Some people believe that no captive dolphin program can be fully ethical, since nothing can truly replace life in the wild. Because of this, Dolphin Life is considered a best-practice option for dolphins who truly need human care. It is as ethical as it can be.

WHAT CAN YOU DO DURING DOLPHIN LIFE VISIT?
During a visit to Dolphin Life in Key Largo, there are a few different experiences you can choose from. First, you can book an educational tour of the organization. To do this, you can purchase a day pass on their website or on site, which allows you to stay for the whole day. You will observe the dolphins up close in a natural seawater lagoon and learn about their personalities, behavior, and how the staff cares for them on a daily basis. These tours are very detailed and informative. We did this experience and I would highly recommend it, but I’ll share more in the “our experience” section of the blog.
You can also book a swim with the dolphins, either as a group experience or a VIP option. During these swims, you enter the seawater lagoon and swim alongside the dolphins. You get to see their true personalities, and the dolphins are never forced to do anything. All interaction is voluntary. The experience usually lasts around 2 hours, and you can book it directly through their website.

OUR KEY LARGO DOLPHIN EXPERIENCE AT DOLPHIN LIFE
We arrived in Key Largo early in the morning, and at that time there were no scheduled tours happening. However, the incredibly kind Brie and Nicole arranged for one of the volunteers to give us a tour of the entire organization. We paid for our day pass and started the tour right away.
The volunteer, who was absolutely lovely (unfortunately I don’t remember her name), showed us pretty much everything. We visited the kitchen, where she explained how the dolphins’ food is prepared and how they are fed. She even showed us a bucket made specifically for one of the dolphins. Their meals consist of jelly, ice cubes, and different types of fish.

After the kitchen, we went through the toys the dolphins use. The dolphins are free to play whenever they want, but they are never pressured to do so. That’s what makes it so fun to watch them interact with the toys. They especially love pool noodles.

Next, we were taken to the office area, where they also keep all the medicine and supplements the dolphins receive. We saw the vitamins, eye drops, and other treatments they use. Even though these dolphins cannot return to the wild, dolphins living under human care can often live much longer than they would in the wild.

Finally, we visited the seawater lagoon and met the dolphins: Jessica, Jet, Tug, Zoe, Babybit, and Dinghy. While we were not allowed to touch them since this was an educational tour, we still loved meeting these sweet animals. They are very friendly and curious, and they stayed close to us the entire time. They truly seemed like a happy group, and I absolutely loved meeting them. We learned so much, and I was extremely happy with this experience.

CONCLUSION: KEY LARGO DOLPHIN EXPERIENCE
If you want to have a Key Largo dolphin experience on your trip, I’d highly recommend stopping by Dolphin Life. The staff were incredibly friendly, answered all of our questions, and even helped organize a tour for us when there wasn’t one scheduled. I especially want to give a shoutout to Nicole and Brie, who made us feel so welcome.
You can truly feel how much they care about the dolphins, and because of that, I would absolutely recommend visiting Dolphin Life if you have the time.
