IS ZAGREB WORTH VISITING ON YOUR CROATIA TRIP? (HONEST OPINION FROM A LOCAL!)
If you’re planning your Croatia trip and wondering is Zagreb worth visiting, you’ll want to read this blog post!
Zagreb is the capital city of Croatia, and many people are in two minds about visiting Zagreb or just skipping it and going straight to the coast. I’ve been living in Zagreb for the past six years, and I’m on the coast every summer, so I think I can give you a pretty good overview of why you should visit Zagreb, or why you might want to skip it.
In short, I think Zagreb is totally worth visiting if you have enough time to see everything you want on the coast. However, if you’re hesitant about choosing between Zagreb and any coastal town, I’d still go for the coast.
But let’s break all of this down!

ZAGREB IS WORTH VISITING IF…
YOU HAVE PLENTY OF TIME IN CROATIA
If you have plenty of time in Croatia, for example 2+ weeks to explore both the coast and Zagreb, then I’d definitely recommend visiting Zagreb and spending a few days there. Zagreb is lovely, but it doesn’t quite compare to the stunning Adriatic coast. So if you have time for both, go for it, if not, it’s okay to skip it!
YOU’RE INTO CITY LIFE
Zagreb is your typical capital city with lots of buildings, crowds, and traffic. However, it’s also full of incredible coffee shops, restaurants, shops, bars, and more. If you enjoy a lively city break, you should definitely visit Zagreb. You’ll be able to enjoy brunches, events, workshops, and other activities. If you come in the summer, you can also explore several of Zagreb’s parks, which are, in my opinion, some of the best parts of the city.

YOU LOVE FUN MUSEUMS
Zagreb has so many museums. Those serious, important ones, but also plenty of fun and quirky ones. I’d highly recommend checking out The Museum of Chocolate, The Museum of Illusions, The Museum of Broken Relationships, The Hangover Museum, The ‘80s Museum, and more!
YOU WANT AN AFFORDABLE OPTION
While I can’t say that Zagreb is the cheapest destination (I actually have a blog post on how expensive Zagreb is), it’s still much more affordable than most of the Croatian coast. The coast during summer can be ridiculously expensive and yes, we all hate that. So, if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly way to visit Croatia, Zagreb is definitely the more affordable option.

YOU’RE VISITING IN WINTER
If you’re visiting Croatia in winter, Zagreb should probably be your number one option. The coast can be tricky during this time because the weather is unpredictable, and most towns are quiet, with many restaurants and attractions closed. Split is the main exception, because it stays lively throughout the year.
Zagreb, however, is the perfect destination in December. The city hosts one of the best Christmas markets in Europe, and it’s truly worth experiencing. The atmosphere is magical, with festive lights, food stalls, events, and concerts all over the city. Just keep in mind that prices do go up during this period, so plan your budget accordingly.

ZAGREB IS NOT WORTH VISITING IF …
YOU’RE COMING FOR THE SEA AND BEACHES
If you’re coming to Croatia for the sea and beaches, Zagreb obviously isn’t the destination for you. While it’s not too far (you can reach the coast in about 1.5 hours) if your only goal is to enjoy the sea, I’d still rather spend all my time on the coast than use it inland. The Croatian coast is absolutely stunning, with so many incredible towns to visit, that there’s really no need to include Zagreb if beaches and coastal views are your main priority.
YOU HAVE A LIMITED NUMBER OF DAYS IN CROATIA
If you’re visiting Croatia between April and October and only have a few days, go straight to the coast and skip Zagreb. I love Zagreb and truly believe it’s worth visiting, but I’d never choose it over the coast, especially if you’re short on time. The Adriatic is at its absolute best during these months, and you’ll get far more out of your trip by focusing on seaside towns, islands, and beaches. Leave Zagreb for another trip when you have more time to properly explore it.

YOU PREFER CHARMING OLD TOWNS
Zagreb is a capital city, and while it does have its own charming Upper Town, it’s still quite urban, busy, and sometimes loud. If you’re looking for picturesque small towns where you can take in the history, relax, and simply enjoy the scenery, the coast is a much better choice. Old towns like those in Dubrovnik, Hvar, Korcula, or Split offer far more scenic walks than Zagreb!
YOU WANT THE CITY TO “WOW” YOU
Zagreb is your typical eastern European capital, with a bit too much concrete and still quite a few buildings damaged from the 2020 earthquake. While I do think Zagreb has its own charm, it’s not as visually striking as some other more popular European capitals. So if you’re expecting it to completely wow you at first glance, you might end up a little disappointed.

MY PERSONAL TAKE AS SOMEONE WHO LIVES IN ZAGREB – IS ZAGREB WORTH VISITING?
Zagreb is a lovely city, and there’s truly a lot you can do here. It’s diverse, full of great coffee shops and restaurants, and the parks are absolutely beautiful if you’re visiting in spring or summer. It’s perfect for a relaxed and enjoyable city break.
However, if I only had 5–7 days to see the very best of Croatia, I would choose to spend them on the coast. Not because Zagreb isn’t lovely, but because the coast is simply on another level. There’s no place on Earth I love as much as our Adriatic Coast, and unfortunately for Zagreb, it just can’t compete with that.

CONCLUSION: IS ZAGREB WORTH VISITING?
Yes, Zagreb is absolutely worth visiting, especially if you have enough time to explore both the coast and Zagreb properly. However, if you have to choose between spending more time on the coast or in Zagreb, I can easily tell you to sacrifice Zagreb. The Croatian coast is simply too magical to miss, and if time is limited, that’s where I’d focus your trip.
