No matter how you like to travel, you’ll find a few activities in this guide that can make your trip to Croatia even better.

As a local, I’ve either done most of these activities myself or heard plenty of great reviews about them, so you can be sure each one is truly worth your time.

Explore Croatia’s National Parks on Foot

Croatia is very popular for its beautiful national parks. From Plitvice Lakes and Krka to Risnjak and Paklenica, Croatia’s national parks are truly stunning and each one is worth visiting. One of the top activities I recommend to anyone exploring Croatia is visiting a national park on foot. No matter which park you choose, you’ll be surrounded by incredible nature.

Croatia’s national parks are spread all over the country, so wherever you travel, there will likely be one nearby. My top three are Plitvice Lakes, Brijuni, and Krka. Tickets are usually around €40 in the summer, while prices are lower in the shoulder and off seasons. Even in summer, the parks are absolutely worth the price, so make sure to include at least one in your itinerary.

Kayak Around Dubrovnik’s Old City Walls

If you enjoy kayaking or water-based activities, this is an experience in Dubrovnik you shouldn’t miss. Kayaking along the Croatian coast is generally beautiful and relaxing, but paddling around Dubrovnik’s historic city walls is truly one of a kind. The views from the sea are absolutely incredible. You can join a guided tour or rent a kayak and explore on your own.

Many routes also include a stop at Betina Cave, where you can pull your kayak ashore and go for a swim. I’d especially recommend a sunset kayaking tour, because seeing the sun go down over the sea with Dubrovnik’s Old Town in the background is unforgettable.

Go Island Hopping Along the Dalmatian Coast

The islands are the pride and joy of Croatia, and many visitors come here specifically to explore them. Island hopping along the Dalmatian Coast is one of the best ways to experience Croatia’s diversity and is also one of the country’s most popular activities. Even if you only have a day or two extra, I’d still include at least one island in your itinerary. Each island has something unique to offer, but they all share crystal-clear water and a relaxed island atmosphere.

We’ve explored several islands by car, which is a great way to see them at your own pace. If you don’t have a car, you can easily take a catamaran to nearby islands and enjoy them as a day trip. Some of our favourites near Split are Hvar, Brac, and Vis, while near Dubrovnik we love Korcula, Mljet, and Lopud. You can also join an organised boat tour or rent a private boat to visit hidden spots along the way. Island hopping is one of my favourite ways to explore Croatia, and it’s something you really shouldn’t miss.

Visit the Blue Cave on Bisevo Island

One of the most popular activities on the Croatian coast is visiting the Blue Cave on Bisevo Island. It’s one of the most impressive natural sights in Croatia, known for the bright blue light that fills the cave when sunlight reflects through an opening underwater. While the view inside the cave is stunning, the visit itself is quite short and usually lasts only a few minutes. Swimming inside the cave is not allowed, so there’s no real reason to stay longer than to enjoy the view.

Because of this, Blue Cave tours are often combined with island hopping. This allows you to see more places, swim at nearby beaches, and visit small island towns. Most tours start from Split or Vis, and some also leave from Hvar. Since it’s a very popular attraction, it can get crowded during peak season, but seeing the glowing blue light in person is still a unique experience and worth doing.

One of the attractions you must see in Split is Diocletian’s Palace. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and still very lively today. The palace is filled with bars, restaurants, ice cream shops, and even apartments, which makes it a truly unique place. Even if you don’t stay nearby, you should at least walk through it.

If you want to really understand the history of Split, joining a guided tour is a great idea. A guide will take you to hidden corners and share interesting stories about Roman emperors and events that happened exactly where you’re standing. This is an absolute must-do while in Split.

Explore Ancient Roman Ruins in Pula

Another must-see historical site in Croatia is the Roman amphitheater in Pula. If you’re visiting Istria, this should definitely be on your itinerary. It’s often compared to Rome’s Colosseum and is an impressive example of Roman architecture, so it’s well worth a visit.

The city of Pula is also full of ancient Roman ruins, so after visiting the amphitheater, you can continue exploring the rest of the city. One of the most special experiences is attending a concert or event inside the amphitheater. Each summer, big international artists perform here. If you’re visiting Zagreb, sit on Tkalceviceva Street or at Cvjetni Trg. In Split, grab a table on the Riva promenade. And in Dubrovnik, find a spot on Stradun!

If you want to experience a truly breathtaking sunset, one even praised by Alfred Hitchcock, you have to see it in Zadar. While there are many beautiful sunset spots all over Croatia, Zadar offers something really special. As the sun sets over the Adriatic Sea, the Sea Organ creates music powered by the waves, so the whole experience feels almost magical.

This is a completely free experience and one of the most unique things you can do in Croatia. Keep in mind that during the peak summer months, the area gets very crowded around sunset time, so it’s best to arrive early. For a truly authentic Croatian experience, don’t stick only to the main tourist hotspots. I’d highly recommend taking the time to explore small villages along the coast and inland. Some of my favourites are small towns and villages in Istria, such as Groznjan, Vodnjan, Motovun, Labin, and Bale. You’ll also find plenty of beautiful villages on the islands and along the Makarska Riviera. No matter where you go, exploring these smaller places will help you understand Croatian culture better and give you much more local experiences than staying only in big cities like Split or Dubrovnik.

Experience Summer Festivals and Klapa Singing

During the summer, many towns and villages along the Croatian coast come alive with festivals that celebrate local culture, music, and traditions. At these events, you can experience the kind of parties locals enjoy, including regional dances and the famous klapa singing, a traditional a cappella style that is always a highlight.

Festivals are a great way to truly experience Croatian culture, meet locals, and enjoy authentic food, music, and dance. To make sure you don’t miss out, it’s a good idea to check the tourist board schedule of the city or town you’re visiting.
