TOP 5 BEACHES ON LOPUD ISLAND: YOUR ULTIMATE GUIDE

If you’re wondering which are the best beaches on Lopud, this blog post is for you!

Dubrovnik is an absolutely stunning city, but honestly, beaches aren’t its strongest feature. While there are some nice beaches in and around Dubrovnik, they’re often extremely crowded because of the huge number of visitors. That’s exactly why I’d recommend visiting Lopud, even if it’s just for a day trip, if you want a really enjoyable beach day.

I spend a lot of time on Lopud every year and it’s genuinely my favourite place in Croatia, so I truly think you shouldn’t skip it if you’re already this close. Keep reading to discover my 5 favourite beaches on one of Croatia’s most charming islands!

WHERE IS LOPUD?

Lopud is one of the Elaphiti Islands near Dubrovnik, and it’s very easy to reach either by ferry or as part of a boat tour. You can visit Lopud on its own by ferry, or join a full-day tour of the Elaphiti Islands, where Lopud is usually included as one of the main stops.

The island is known for its greenery, beautiful beaches, and relaxed atmosphere, and it’s my favourite place on Earth. Overall, it’s one of the most popular and worthwhile day trips from Dubrovnik, especially if you want a break from the busy old town and a more peaceful beach-focused day!

WHAT ARE THE BEACHES ON LOPUD LIKE

Beaches are the best part of Lopud and the reason why I like visiting Lopud so much. When you compare beaches on Lopud to the crowded beaches in Dubrovnik, you’ll quickly realize that these two, while really close, are two different worlds.

Firstly, the beaches on Lopud are sandy. Croatia doesn’t have many sandy beaches, and there are none in Dubrovnik, so if you like sandy beaches you must visit Lopud. The sand is soft and the slopes are gentle, so there are shallow waters all around the island.

Secondly, the sea is crystal-clear around Lopud. The Adriatic is exceptionally clear, but it’s especially clear around Lopud, making it perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

Thirdly, Lopud’s beaches are really family-friendly. I already mentioned that they’re quite shallow for several meters, especially Šunj Beach, so they’re ideal for families with children. You can relax while the children play in the sea without any worries.

Finally, the beaches are very diverse, so you can pick your favourite according to your preferences. You can choose the beaches near the main village and be close to restaurants and cafes. On the other hand, you can visit Sunj, a huge beach with beach bars and a lot of people. Finally, if you desperately want to be alone, you can choose the rocky beaches. They’re near the edge of the island and you can be by yourself.

TOP 5 BEACHES ON LOPUD

SUNJ BEACH

The most famous beach on Lopud is Sunj Beach. It’s a large, crescent-shaped sandy beach with shallow waters extending far into the sea, making it ideal for families and children. It’s the most popular beach on the island, so it has diverse facilities nearby.

The beach has several beach bars and restaurants, sun loungers and umbrellas for rent, showers, and toilets. It also has paddle boards and other sports equipment which you can rent.

The potential downside of this beach is that it can get quite crowded in the peak summer season. A lot of people come by boat directly to Sunj for a beach day. Also, it’s about a 30-minute walk from the main village. To get there, you’ll either have to take a pretty challenging walk or get a golf cart taxi. The taxi is 3 euros per person.

LOPUD PORT BEACH

Lopud port beach is a small beach you can see while arriving with the ferry. You’ll find it right under the church of St. Mary, on a concrete platform where you can either lay a towel or rent a sunbed.

It’s an overall small beach where only a few sunbeds can comfortably fit, but it’s got natural shade and the views from the beach are stunning.

There aren’t any facilities at the beach, but you need 2-3 minutes to the main village. There you can buy anything you need. Also, there’s a fruit stand where you can grab some fruit if you don’t want to venture into the village. Another plus is the fact that you can get on this beach directly off the ferry.

LOPUD BEACH

Lopud Beach is only a few meters away from the port beach, and right at the entrance of the main village on the island. It’s a fairly small beach but it’s the perfect one if you want a proper sandy beach without the need to go to Šunj.

You can rent sunbeds on the beach, and there’s an ice cream shop and a few bars and restaurants right next to the beach. It often gets crowded, but if you’re there in the morning or late afternoon you can always grab a spot with some of the best views of the island!

DOMINICAN MONASTERY BEACH

There’s a small beach in front of the Dominican Monastery on the island, and another one right next to it, near restaurant Dubrovnik. They’re quite often empty, or with small amounts of people. You can rent a sunbed and there’s plenty of bars, shops, and restaurants nearby.

The beaches are small enough that the sunbed might not fit on to the beach, so you’ll have to keep them on the promenade, but there’s plenty of space so you won’t be a nuisance to people walking by.

The beach is sandy, and while it might be pebbly while walking in the sea, the rocks are soon replaced by perfectly soft sand beneath your feet!

ROCKY BEACHES

The final swimming spot I’ll mention are the rocks along the edge of the island, perfect for those who love complete isolation. Of course, these places are not for those seeking sandy beaches, as well as those who want shallow waters.

There’s a walkway from the village to the edge of the island, and once you pass the Lafodia Lopud hotel, there are several paths which you can take from the walkway down to the rocky beaches. The waters are crystal-clear, and there won’t be any people to disturb your peace!

+ ADDITIONAL PRIVATE BEACH

LAFODIA LOPUD HOTEL BEACH

If you decide to stay at Lopud Lafodia Resort, you’ll have access to one of the most beautiful beaches on Lopud. It’s a stunning pebbly beach with plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas available for guests to use, making it really comfortable for a full beach day. There are also beach cabanas if you want something a bit more private or special. Since everything is connected to the hotel, it’s super easy to just step out and enjoy the sea without worrying about anything else.

Just keep in mind that the hotel is currently under renovation, so these amenities might not be available at the moment. The new hotel is said to be opening in 2027.

CONCLUSION: BEST BEACHES ON LOPUD

Lopud has some truly incredible beaches, and it’s honestly my favourite beach destination in all of Croatia. I’d especially recommend checking out Sunj Beach because it’s really something special and feels completely different from the more typical Dubrovnik-area beaches. But I also love just taking a random swim along the promenade, since the sea is absolutely stunning everywhere on the island. If you’re planning an itinerary around Dubrovnik, definitely try to add Lopud in, even just for a day trip!
