DUBROVNIK PHOTO SPOTS: IN THE OLD TOWN

DUBROVNIK CITY WALLS

As you’re probably aware, the absolute best photo spots in Dubrovnik are at the City Walls. The ancient walls encircle the Old Town and give you panoramic views of the city, the Adriatic Sea, and the surrounding landscapes. The most stunning backdrops for your photos are the gorgeous red rooftops of the houses and buildings beneath.

The best time for photos at this location is early morning or late afternoon. The City Walls open at 8 a.m. and close at 6.30 p.m. In those early or late hours, the lightning is the best and the crowds are the smallest. Get more details about visiting Dubrovnik City Walls here!

FORT BOKAR

Fort Bokar is part of the City Walls, so you’ll visit it during your walk around the Walls. This fort has stunning views of the Old Town, red rooftops, Fort Lovrijenac, and the Adriatic Sea. If you want a picture at even higer elevation, continue up the stairs after Fort Bokar and take a picture there. These photos are taken from the higher vantage point.

The best time for photos here is the same as for the City Walls. Either go early in the morning or late afternoon, near sunset.

FORT LOVRIJENAC

Fort Lovrijenac is one of the most stunning Dubrovnik photo spots. It’s situated right across the Old Town and the City Walls, so it provides a dramatic backdrop of the Old Town and the sea. Fort Lovrijenac is included in your City Walls ticket so you can visit it and explore it in the same day. In case you don’t have a ticket to the City Walls, you can still climb up to the Lovrijenac fortress. This photo spot is right at the entrance and you can take a photo without having a ticket!

The best time for photos at Fort Lovrijenac is during golden hour (just after sunrise or before sunset). But, if you can’t manage to visit during that time, all throughout the day you can capture really gorgeous photos.

PLOČE GATE

Ploče Gate is of the main entrances to the Old Town, and it might be my favourite photo spot in Dubrovnik. This stunning gate provides a picturesque view of the harbor and City Walls, and it really is breathtaking!

The best time to take photos at Ploče Gate is early morning if you want to escape the crowds and not have many people in your background, but if you don’t feel like getting up early, you can take a photo there at any point during the day.

STRADUN

Stradun is the main street of the Old Town, lined with historic buildings and full with activity. This street is 300 meters long and runs through the Old Town from Pile to Ploče Gate. The street is usually always crowded, but since it’s so long, there’s always a place you can use for a photo.

The best time for a photo on Stradun is definitely early morning when there are the fewest people possible. You can also take some late at night when there’s no one around.

RECTOR’S PALACE

Rector’s Palace is a beautiful historical building in the heart of the Old Town, and it’s perfect for architectural photography. It’s beautiful and picture-worthy from the outside, but if you have Dubrovnik’s City Pass the entrance is free, so make sure you enter and take some stunning photos of the interior as well.

The best time for taking pictures of the Rector’s Palace is anytime during the day!

PORPORELA OR KOMARDA BEACH

Near the Dubrovnik harbor you can get some of the most stunning views of the harbor, sea, and the City Walls. Porporela is a breakwater pier in the Old Town harbor, and you can get lovely and picturesque views of the town there. As Porporela can often be crowded, I would recommend visiting Komarda Beach. This beach has some of the best views of the harbor and Old Town.

The best time to take pictures at Porporela or Komarda Beach is during sunset for a tranquil and scenic view.

DUBROVNIK PHOTO SPOTS: NEAR THE OLD TOWN

LOKRUM ISLAND

If you feel like venturing out of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, Lokrum is a perfect picturesque location. A short boat ride from Dubrovnik, this island is a green oasis full of historic ruins and stunning views back towards the city. Some of the most popular photo spots on Lokrum are the Monastery where Game of Thrones was filmed, as well as Buža na Lokrumu, a stunning rock formation.

The best time for a photo on Lokrum is whenever you’re there. The island is gorgeous all throughout the day.

ARBORETUM TRSTENO

Trsteno Arboretum is a drive away, but it’s worth the trip if you like nature. This historic arboretum is located about 20 km from Dubrovnik, and it features exotic plants, a stunning fountain, and gorgeous views of the sea. You can spend a few hours at this garden and you’ll find plenty of good photo spots while you’re there!

The best time for photos here is all throughout the day. There’s a lot of shade due to tall trees, so you’ll have amazing pictures even during the strongest sun hours.

ELAPHITI ISLANDS

Elaphiti Islands are absolutely beautiful and totally worth the trip. These islands, the three most popular ones being Lopud, Šipan, and Koločep, are very popular boat tour options, so check those out if you want to visit all three of them. I personally love Lopud the most, and you can reach it by ferry if you prefer visiting only one island. Some of the most popular photos you can get on Šunj Beach or in front of the Lopud Monastery.

The best time to take photos on these islands is definitely morning or late afternoon at sunset. The sun is not too strong and the crowds are the smallest.

MOUNT SRĐ

Mount Srđ is the most beautiful and most popular viewpoint in Dubrovnik, and it will leave you speechless. Srđ is special because it offers a breathtaking bird’s-eye view of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, the coastline, and nearby islands. You can reach it by car or by cable car, and you can either just visit the free viewipoint, or you can book a table at Panorama, a restaurant with the best view in Dubrovnik!

The best time to take photos at this location is definitely at sunset for the spectacular views of the sun setting over the Adriatic.

BANJE BEACH

The last location on this list is Dubrovnik’s most famous beach, Banje Beach. The beach is located near the Old Town, and it gives you the perfect view of the beach overlooking the Old Town. You can take pictures down at the beach or along the sidewalk before climbing down to the charming beach.

The best time to take pictures at Banje Beach is early in the morning when there’s no people at the beach, or throughout the day from the sidewalk above the beach.
