WHERE IS KORCULA

Korcula is an island is located in the Adriatic Sea, off the coast of Croatia. It is part of the Dalmatian archipelago in the southern part of Croatia, fairly close to Dubrovnik and Mljet. The island is known for its medieval architecture, crystal-clear waters, vineyards, and as the birthplace of the explorer Marco Polo.

If you enjoy stunning medieval old towns but want to escape the crazy crowds such as those in Dubrovnik, Korcula will be perfect for you.

WHEN TO VISIT KORCULA

Korcula will sweep you off your feet anytime of the year, but depending on your preferences some times during the year might be better for a visit than others. Here’s a breakdown of the seasons with all their pros and cons:

SPRING AND SUMMER

Summer (June to August) is the most popular time to visit Croatia in general, so Korcula thrives during summer as well. Summer brings warm weather, plenty of sunshine, and many tourists. While Korcula has many visitors, it’s nowhere near Dubrovnik or Split crowds, so if you aren’t bothered by people, you won’t have any problems.

Summer is ideal for beach activities, swimming, and water sports as Korcula has many gorgeous sandy and pebbly beaches. Keep in mind that accommodation prices will be much higher in the summer season, as well as restaurant prices.

Spring (April to May) is perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy sunny Korcula with barely any tourists. Temperatures are mild and the flowers are blooming, which makes Korcula a picture-perfect destination.

Spring is also ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and exploring the island’s sights. Another plus is that accommodation is cheaper than in peak season, but some restaurants, shops, and attractions may have limited operating hours, especially in April.

AUTUMN AND WINTER

Autumn (September to October) is another great time to visit Korcula if you wish to avoid tourist season. The season still offers pleasant temperatures with warm days and cooler evenings, and the sea is still warm for swimming. It’s a great time to experience wine tours and tastings as it’s harvest season, and accommodation will probably be cheaper than in summer.

Winter (November to March) is the off-season period with cooler temperatures and occasional rainfall. This period is ideal for travelers seeking solitude and tranquility, as the island is much quieter. Unfortunately, that also means that many tourist facilities are closed during this time, and some attractions may have limited hours.

On top of that, weather can be unpredictable, so outdoor activities may be limited. Overall, you might not have the best time outside, but accommodation rates are at their lowest, so if you’re on a big budget this might be the best option for you.

We visited Korcula in early April and had a great time. It was warm and sunny, and there were almost no tourists. The only con was the fact that many things weren’t open so we had limited restaurant options and couldn’t rent a scooter. You also cannot swim in the sea this early in the year.

WHERE TO STAY ON KORCULA ISLAND

I would highly recommend staying in Korcula Town, which is the most popular town on the island. From there you can easily explore thee rest of the island by local buses, your own car, or rented car or scooter. We stayed at MARIJA apartment in the heart of the Old Town and we had the best time. The host was amazing and the whole apartment was absolutely fantastic. If Korcula Town isn’t for you, check out Vela Luka, another little town on the island. You can find other acommodation options on Booking!
