WHERE IS BURANO
Burano is an island in the Venetian Lagoon, in northern Italy. It is situated near Venice and is known for its brightly colored houses, picturesque canals, and lace-making tradition.
Burano is one of the many islands in the Venetian Lagoon and is easily accessible by boat from Venice. Other islands like Murano and Torcello are also worth visiting, but Burano creates an especially charming and unique atmosphere for visitors.

WHY VISIT BURANO
Visiting Burano can be a delightful experience for several reasons. Firstly, Burano is known for its vibrant and brightly colored houses. Each house is painted in a different hue, making it a visually stunning destination. Combined with lovely canals, Burano is a photographer’s paradise. So, if you like taking photos and seeing photogenic locations, Burano is perfect for you.
Burano also has a long-standing tradition of lace-making. The island is famous for its handmade lace products, and you can explore local shops to see intricate lacework or even purchase some as souvenirs.
On Burano you can also find excellent seafood restaurants where you can savor fresh catches from the lagoon. Enjoying a meal by the water with a view of the colorful surroundings adds to the overall experience.
On top of all that, while Venice is always packed with tourists, Burano is relatively quieter and provides a refreshing break from the crowds. It’s a great place to enjoy a more relaxed and laid-back atmosphere, stroll through the streets with ease, and overall have a much quieter day than you would in Venice.
HOW TO GET TO BURANO
Once you’re in Venice, you’ll need to make your way to the Venetian Lagoon, where Burano is located. The main transportation hub in Venice is the Piazzale Roma, which you can reach by bus or taxi.
From Piazzale Roma or other key points in Venice you can take a Vaporetto (water bus) to Burano. The Vaporetto line you’ll want to look for is Line 12, which connects Venice to the islands of Murano, Burano, and Torcello.
As we were already in the city, we went to Burano from Fondamenta Nova Vaporetto station. The journey time from Venice to Burano is around 45 minutes and it costs 15 euros per person for a round trip.
If you prefer a more private and direct transfer, you can take a water taxi from Venice to Burano. Keep in mind that water taxis are way more expensive than the Vaporetto (usually over 50 euros).
CAN YOU STAY ON BURANO?
Burano is primarily a day-trip destination so there aren’t a ton of options to choose from if you want to stay on the island. However, I will list some options here, and you decide if this is somewhere you’d stay!
Bed and Breakfasts – Some local residents offer bed and breakfast accommodations on the island. These options can provide a more intimate experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in the local lifestyle.
Rental Apartments – Some residents may rent out apartments for short-term stays. This can be a good option if you prefer a self-catering setup and want a more private space. You can check them out on AirBnB.

Casa arancione a Burano – a one bedroom apartment with a fully equipped kitchen. It’s 350 meters from the centre of Burano and it’s pet friendly!
Casa degli Artisti – this incredible historical house is now a 2-bedroom residence in which you can have all the comfort in the world. It sleeps 4 guests, it’s 400 meters from the Burano centre, and it has a garden!
Night Galleria – bed & art – this is another absolutely stunning house rental. It’s modern and offers incredible views. It has 2 bedrooms and it’s 450 meters from the centre of Burano.

WHAT TO SEE IN BURANO
Although Burano is a relatively small island, there are several attractions and interesting things to see that make it a worthwhile destination. Here are a few of my favourites:
Colorful Houses
The most iconic feature of Burano is its brightly colored houses. Stroll through the charming streets and enjoy the vibrant and picturesque scenery. The colors are not only aesthetically pleasing but historically served a practical purpose – helping fishermen identify their homes from a distance.
Lace-Making Workshops
Burano is famous for its lace-making tradition. You can visit local shops and workshops to see artisans creating intricate lace products. Some shops also offer lace-making demonstrations, so you can see how exactly they make various objects out of lace! These also might be very unique souvenirs to brink back home.
Church of San Martino
This lovely church dates back to the 16th century and houses a number of important artworks, including paintings by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. One of the churches most important segments is the church’s tall, leaning bell tower.
Museo del Merletto (Lace Museum)
If you’re interested in the history of lace-making, you can visit the Lace Museum to learn about the development of this craft on the island. The museum displays various lace pieces and provides information about the techniques used.
Boat Rides
If you want to experience Burano from water, you can take a boat ride around the island or venture out into the surrounding lagoon. This is the perfect way to see a different perspective of Burano and its neighboring islands.
Overall, Burano doesn’t have lots of things to do, which is why it’s a perfect half-day or day trip. Burano is the perfect escape from the bustling crowds of Venice and it will be a peaceful yet beautiful experience you’ll remember forever!
