Dubrovnik and Split are both very loved Croatian cities with hordes of tourists visiting each summer season. If you’re planning on coming to Croatia you probably already have both of these cities on your list. If for some reason you cannot visit both cities, this post will answer all of your questions!
After this guide, I’m sure you’ll have no problem picking between the two.
Let’s start!

HOW TO GET TO DUBROVNIK AND SPLIT?
These two cities are probably the two most popular cities in Croatia, so you won’t have any problems finding your way to them.
Both Dubrovnik and Split are very easily reachable since they each have their own airport. If you’re coming from the USA, it might be easier to fly into Dubrovnik since it usually has direct flights to and from New York in the summer months.

The airport is 20 kilometers away from the city and you can take a shuttle bus or a cab to reach the city center. All in all, it should be an easy, comfortable experience.

DUBROVNIK OR SPLIT: HOTELS
Since Dubrovnik and Split are Croatia’s main tourist destinations, both cities are extremely expensive when it comes to their accommodation. As everywhere, you can usually find some cheaper options but they’re not the best.
Some of the amazing (but pricey) hotels in Dubrovnik are Hotel Bellevue and Rixos Premium, or you can choose an apartment like Dubrovnik Palm Tree Paradise or The View.

If you need help choosing one in your budget, I go into detail suggesting a place to stay for any budget right here: DUBROVNIK: HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST HOTEL FOR YOUR BUDGET!
In Split, the options are endless as well, and maybe a LITTLE cheaper, but not enough to make a big difference. I would recommend hotels Central Square Heritage Hotel, PRIMA Life Spalato, and Hotel Posh, and if you’re searching for a hostel check out Hostel Dvor.
DUBROVNIK OR SPLIT: WHICH CITY HAS A BETTER OLD TOWN?
Let’s start with the most important attractions of these two destinations. Dubrovnik and Split are both very famous for their Old Towns, and rightfully so. The Old Town is the main landmark of both cities, but which one has more to offer?
While Split’s Old Town is lovely, you can see it in an hour. The cobbled streets, the Diocletian’s Palace, and the main promenade called the Riva are all in one place and they’re fairly small. Dubrovnik’s Old Town on the other hand is much bigger and has a LOT more to offer.
The wonderful historic streets lead you to the city walls, various churches, a fortress, a monastery… the opportunities are endless in Dubrovnik and it will take you a few days to explore the Old Town thoroughly.

It’s safe to say that Dubrovnik has a much better Old Town, so if you’re into history, choose Dubrovnik.

DUBROVNIK OR SPLIT: BEACHES
If you’re coming to Croatia for the beaches, neither of these two cities is going to blow your mind. Not only are there a few of them, but they’re also far from the great beaches you often see online. If you’re searching for incredible beaches, you will find them on any of the islands.
Split
Split has only a few beaches and Bačvice beach is the most popular one. It’s in the middle of the city so it’s always quite crowded and it’s not really a relaxing place. It’s also quite close to the harbor so don’t expect crystal clear water. There are some other beaches at the foot of the Marjan Hill, but I’d say they’re pretty average compared to many other beaches in Croatia. All in all, Split’s beaches are great for a quick swim but if you plan to relax by the beach, don’t stay in Split.
Dubrovnik
People love to claim that Dubrovnik has lovely beaches but there are many factors you must take into consideration here. First of all, it’s impossible to find an actual beach that’s not overly crowded. The most famous beaches in Dubrovnik are St. Jakov, Banje beach, and Pasjača beach and each summer the tourists and the locals ALL find their way to these three beaches.

If you don’t like the crowds, you will have to settle for the rocky sides of the city from where you can jump into the water or use the stairs to enter. Another option is to take a car and go to one of the smaller villages not far from Dubrovnik. There you’ll find beaches which are far less crowded.
Overall, both cities offer beaches for a swim, but they’re not the best. The beaches shouldn’t be your priority when visiting either of these two cities.
DUBROVNIK OR SPLIT: DAY TRIPS
Every time you visit a new city for more than a few days, you’re probably interested in seeing some other locations near it as well.
Both Split and Dubrovnik have their perks when it comes to day trips.

Split gives you a much better reach of the islands Hvar and Brač, which are very popular destinations and you really shouldn’t miss them if you’re coming to Croatia. Split also offers a quicker way to get inland and see Krka Waterfalls and Plitvice Lakes, which are a must-see if you like national parks and nature in general.
On the other hand, Dubrovnik has quick access to Korcula and Mljet which are wonderful Croatian islands with incredible nature. The Elaphiti Islands are also extremely close to Dubrovnik, and any of those islands is a much better option if you want a nice beach and a less crowded space than Dubrovnik.
Finally, from Dubrovnik, you can also visit cities in some neighbouring countries like Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina or Kotor Bay in Montenegro. Find more amazing day trips from Dubrovnik in TOP 5 AMAZING DAY TRIPS FROM DUBROVNIK.

DUBROVNIK OR SPLIT: THINGS TO DO
Both cities have amazing and important landmarks which you must see, so let’s go through them right now!
The most important things you must see in Dubrovnik are:
Stradun
The main street of Dubrovnik is the heart of the town. The 300 meters long street is situated straight in the middle of the city and every narrow street of Dubrovnik will lead you to it. During summer, it’s incredibly crowded, but if you come in the off-season, it’s a lovely place to take a walk.

City Walls
The main reason why so many tourists come to explore Dubrovnik is to see the magnificent city walls. The Walls of Dubrovnik are under the protection of UNESCO and they are almost 2 kilometers long. The views you’ll get from the top of the city walls are incredible and definitely worth the money. The admission ticket for the walls is 35 euros. Make sure you bring a bottle of water and some sunscreen! Here’s a complete guide to everything you need to know about the city walls.

Lokrum
Lokrum is a small island close to Dubrovnik, only a 15-minute boat ride away. Once you get there, you can enjoy the rocky beaches, the incredible greenery, and lovely animals which are all over the island. Did you know that Lokrum has its own Dead Sea? The salty lake is a favourite swimming spot for many families!

Mount Srđ
Srđ will give you the most incredible view of Dubrovnik you could ever imagine. On top of the mount, there’s a museum about the Croatia Homeland war, it has an incredible restaurant with a terrace so you can eat and enjoy the view. You can reach it by car or a cable car or even hike up to the top.

The most important things you must see in Split are:
The Diocletian’s palace
The emperor Diocletian built an incredible palace that is a part of the city today. The original square of the palace is still an open space accessible to all people, and it’s completely free. If you want to explore the structures below, you will have to buy an admission ticket, but it’s still worth it.

The Old Town
With Diocletian’s Palace in its heart, the Old Town consists of magical cobbled streets and wonderful coastal houses made of stone. The Old Town is not that large, but it’s the loveliest part of Split and it’s the one place you cannot miss.

The Riva
The promenade of the city is the most popular place in Split. It’s the location where everyone comes together, whether that’s for a coffee in one of many cafes or for some lunch in one of the restaurants. You need to visit this promenade to experience the true charm of Split!

Marjan park and forest
Escape from the crowds of the city and relax in the park and forest Marjan. Marjan Hill is a place where many people of Split come to run, cycle, or just spend time in nature. Don’t miss the lovely viewpoints from which you can see the whole city of Split.

DUBROVNIK OR SPLIT: WHICH CITY HAS A BETTER NIGHTLIFE?
Both cities have really well-known and popular nightlife. Split is especially known for being a party city. You can go on party sailing tours from Split and explore the Croatian coast, or you can visit some of Split’s most popular nightclubs. If you want to get drunk with other young people, join Split’s Pub Crawl in which you’ll go through many of Split’s best bars. End your night in one of the nightclubs like Hemingway Bar, Vanilla Club, or O’Hara music club.
If you’ve researched Split’s nightlife, you probably know about the Ultra Europe festival. It’s at Poljud stadium each year and it’s the biggest party in the country every single year with over 100 THOUSAND party goers.
Dubrovnik’s clubbing scene is not as big as Split’s. The most famous nightclub in Dubrovnik is Revelin, a club situated inside the 16th-century fortress in the old town. Dubrovnik is more famous for its great bars, beach bars especially, which you can explore by doing a Pub Crawl. Here’s a guide on best places to party in Dubrovnik!

CONCLUSION: WHICH CITY IS BETTER?
If you have time for both, you should definitely visit both cities. But… if you have to choose, Dubrovnik is a FAR superior destination. In Dubrovnik, you can easily spend 5 days and you won’t get sick of it, while 2 days in Split will already make you want to move on. If you’re a big fan of parties and that is a key factor for you, choose Split. Split is also a better option if you’re interested in inland Croatia and want to visit Plitvice Lakes, Krka Waterfalls, or want to go to Zagreb or Istria.
If you want to experience the true magic of the Croatian coast, choose Dubrovnik. Not only is it older, more historic, and more beautiful, you will have no problems finding things to do and see even after a week in Dubrovnik. The Old Town and the city walls you just CAN’T miss, and the day trips to Montenegro are incredible.
I hope this blog post is going to help you make a better choice for your trip. Tell me in the comments, which city do you prefer?

So many great things to do! The Diocletian’s palace sounds amazing and definitely want to see that sooner than later.
I hope you get to visit!
I’m looking forward to visiting Croatia & would love to visit both Dubrovnik & Split. Thanks so much for sharing these helpful tips!
Hope you get to see both cities 🙂
That’s a nice take on both the cities. However, I feel any people are more party lovers, and thus, they are going to choose Split. I personally would go for Dubrovnik.
I agree, somehow Split is almost equally popular yet it’s not equally beautiful, and it’s only because people like to party 🙂
I have yet to visit Croatia so looking forward to experiencing both cities. Both seem to have great points especially the fact that they have a preserved Old Town. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing! I’ve only been to Split and loved it, so this makes me want to go back and see Dubrovnik. I would say that I got an Airbnb in Split and could find some very affordable options!
You must visit Dubrovnik!
I have been to Dubrovnik and Split two times and if you’re looking for a city with a well-preserved Old Town, stunning architecture, and crystal-clear waters, then Dubrovnik is the better choice. However, if you’re on a budget or looking for a city with a more vibrant nightlife, then Split is the better option.
Ultimately, the best city for you will depend on your personal preferences and budget. But no matter which city you choose, you’re sure to have a wonderful time in Croatia.
