If you have extra time in Zagreb and would love to take a great day trip, Opatija is the destination for you! Keep reading this blog post to find out how you can have the best day on the coast only 90 minutes away from Zagreb!
I love going on day trips to the coast because there’s something magical in being able to be by the sea in less than two hours. I’ve loved exploring Istria, but this little town is as magical as many Istrian towns. Opatija is truly a Croatian hidden gem, and you need it on your itinerary!

WHERE IS OPATIJA?
Opatija is located along the northeastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, on the Kvarner Gulf, right next to Istria. It is situated approximately 180 kilometers from Zagreb, and only 18 kilometers from Rijeka. It’s easily accessible from various parts of Croatia and northern Italy, which is perfect if you like day trips. Overall, it’s a gorgeous location for anyone who likes sun, sea, and old-fashioned, elegant towns.

HOW TO REACH OPATIJA FROM ZAGREB
You’ll reach Opatija from Zagreb quite easily, and there are a few transportation options you can choose from, depending on your preferences.
The easiest and quickest way is going by car. The journey takes around two hours and you can take the A1 motorway south from Zagreb towards Rijeka. The highways in Croatia are great, just keep in mind that you’ll have to pay tolls. The tolls from Zagreb to Opatija are around 10 euros one way.

If you don’t drive you can go by bus. Several bus companies have daily routes between Zagreb and Opatija, with departures from Zagreb’s main bus station. The journey typically takes around three hours, and the tickets are around 18 euros one way.
The last option is to go by private transfer if you want a more personalized and comfortable travel experience. That way, you can relax and enjoy the scenic journey without the hassle of navigating public transportation or driving yourself. This is going to be the most expensive option, so if you’re on a budget this might not be for you.
We always go by car because it’s the most comfortable way and you can see lots of locations on the way. If you don’t have a car, consider renting one for a day to go on this day trip.

Spring & Summer
Spring is a delightful time to visit Opatija, if you like warm weather, blooming flowers, and lush greenery. Temperatures are mild, perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and leisurely strolls along the promenade. The biggest plus when you’re visiting in spring is that you can explore the American Gardens, the Lungomare promenade, and various restaurants and cafes without crowds, as the tourist season hasn’t started yet.
Summer is the peak tourist season in Opatija, as it is in any Croatian town on the coast. It’s got warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine, so you can spend lots of time at the beaches and waterfront promenades. There, you can go swimming, sunbathing, and do several water sports.
While the town can be crowded during this time, especially in August, it’s also when you’ll find numerous cultural events, music festivals, and lively street markets happening throughout Opatija. Finally, if you’re a beachgoer, summer is the best option for you, but keep in mind that it’s crowded and expensive.

Autumn & Winter
Autumn is another excellent time to visit Opatija, especially in September and October. As the summer crowds begin to leave, you can enjoy a more relaxed town while the weather remains pleasantly warm. Late autumn is rainy and gloomy, but it’s perfect for wellness activities.
Winter in Opatija is a totally different experience, but it can still be very pleasant. In winter, this little town is extremely peaceful because there are no crowds. This is the perfect time to enjoy great wellness centers, good food, and lovely walks through the town. The weather is mild for winter, with occasional rain or a gust of wind. If you choose to visit in winter, check what restaurants are open. Unfortunately, many of them close at the end of the summer season.

VISIT THE AMERICAN GARDENS
American gardens in Opatija are one of the main landmarks in town. They’re not not owned by Americans, but the landscape of the gardens is in the American style. The gardens are absolutely stunning with several upkept lawns, many flowers, and pathways and they’re completely free. The gardens look lovely any time of the year, but especially in spring and summer!

Villa Angiolina is a beautiful 19th-century villa surrounded by lush botanical gardens. It’s one of the most relaxing sights in Opatija and one you can’t miss.
This historic landmark serves as the home of the Croatian Museum of Tourism, where you can learn about Opatija’s evolution as a premier resort destination. The tickets are around 3 euros and you’ll learn a lot about the city.

RELAX AT PARK ANGIOLINA
After exploring the Villa, spend some time relaxing in Park Angiolina. Park Angiolina is a stunning oasis of greenery located next to Villa Angiolina, so you won’t have to go far. Wander through the park’s winding pathways, full of exotic plant species, elegant sculptures, and picturesque ponds.

VISIT THE CROATIAN WALK OF FAME
One of many special things in Opatija is the Walk of Fame. This is a unique attraction honoring prominent figures from Croatia’s cultural, artistic, and scientific communities.
If you’re someone who likes learning about history, this will be very interesting to you. Stroll along the promenade and discover the stars of many renowned personalities of Croatia, immortalized in bronze plaques.

RELAX ON OPATIJA’S BEACHES
