WHERE IS LONDON AND HOW TO REACH IT?
London, the capital city of England and the United Kingdom, is located in the southeastern part of England. It’s spread across both banks of the river Thames and divided into charming boroughs and neighborhoods.
London has 4 airports, so you can easily reach it from many European cities. The main airport and the closest one to the city is Heathrow Airport. Along with Heathrow, there are 3 airports in smaller towns nearby – Luton, Gatwick, and Stansted. They accommodate budget airlines (Wizz Air, Ryanair, Easy Jet) so the tickets are much cheaper.

WHY VISIT LONDON?
London is an exciting and lively city with heaps of attractions and experiences to offer. From historic landmarks to world-class museums, there’s plenty of cultural treasures to explore. If you’re into history, London will be perfect for you!
Beyond rich history, London is full of vibrant street markets, theater districts, and amazing restaurants from all over the world. You will never be bored in London, and I’m sure once you visit it, London will capture your heart completely. I LOVE returning to London and it’s always going to be one of my favorite cities in the world.

MUST-KNOW INFORMATION BEFORE VISITING LONDON
Here are some of the important details you need to know before visiting London and England in general.
- Their currency is British Pound sterling (GBP) – England has a really strong currency so England might be really expensive to you. It sure was to us! There’s no need to have cash, we paid everything by card each time we were there.
- They drive on the left side of the street – keep this in mind if you’re planning on renting a car and driving. If you’re not a confident driver I would not recommend driving on the left for the first time.
- They’re not in the EU – the UK left the European Union, which means if you’re travelling from Europe, you need a passport. Check if your passport also requires a Visa.
- Weather can be unpredictable – no matter what time of the year you’re visiting, be prepared for everything. We were once there in February and there was sunshine, rain, and snow in one afternoon. It also often rains during summer months, so always have an umbrella and a light jacket with you.
- Most important landmarks are usually free – you won’t need to spend money on landmarks such as the Natural History Museum, the British Museum, the National Gallery, or Sky Garden.

WHEN TO VISIT LONDON?
London is a great idea at any point during the year, so you can’t really go wrong when it comes to planning a visit. Spring is special because it brings blooming flowers and milder temperatures. There are plenty of places where you can see blooming cherry trees, and you can enjoy sightseeing and outdoor activities.
Summer is perfect because the weather is excellent and London is packed with festivals, outdoor events, and lively markets. Autumn, on the other hand, turns London into a golden marvel and offers a quieter, more serene experience.
Winter is magical in London. With London’s Christmas Markets there’s plenty of festive decorations, ice skating rinks, and cozy pubs calling your name. There are many amazing Christmas locations which are absolutely gorgeous and worth the visit.
I loved our summer visit the most (July) because there wasn’t any rain or wind. That means we truly enjoyed the mild English summer. There were lots of things to do and the crowds weren’t too bad at that time. On the other hand, I would not return to London in December because the crowds were inhumane. London during Christmas is stunning, but very cramped.

WHERE TO STAY IN LONDON?
London is huge, so it has thousands of accommodation options perfect for every budget and preference. If you’re for a luxurious stay, indulge in the stunning surroundings of Mayfair or Knightsbridge, where you can find plenty of five-star hotels and designer boutiques.
For a trendier option, choose Shoreditch or Camden, which have many hip hotels, quirky cafes, and vibrant nightlife.
Finally, if you’re on a budget, find hostels and budget hotels in areas like Paddington and King’s Cross. They offer affordable accommodation without compromising on comfort or convenience.
We are never in the luxury category, but we try to find the best affordable option fairly close to the major London landmarks. We’ve been through many hotels, but the one I can recommend is London House Hotel near Hyde Park. Not only is the location great, but the rooms are clean and spacious, and the service is great. We would definitely return to that hotel!

IS LONDON EXPENSIVE?
While London has a reputation as an expensive city, there are plenty of ways to experience the city without breaking the bank. If you’re on a budget, don’t stress, just adapt!
Firstly, opt for free attractions like the British Museum, National Gallery, and walking tours to soak in the city’s rich culture without spending a penny. I have a blog post on free things to do in London – useful if you’re on a budget.
Secondly, you should take advantage of public transportation options like the Tube and buses to navigate the city affordably. If you’re on a really strict budget, try to walk a lot because London is a really walkable city. If you love walking, you won’t even need the public transportation.
Finally, when it comes to food, you can indulge in budget-friendly eats at street markets and local eateries. You should also add restaurants like Nando’s and Wetherspoons on your list. They have really affordable food on their menus, so you can eat at a restaurant on a budget.
If you’ve got a bigger budget for your trip to London and don’t need to stress about the money, you can enjoy London as you please, just don’t go overboard with taxis, fine dining, and drinks at the bars. Those three are the most expensive part of London.

DAY 1 IN LONDON
HYDE PARK
We always book our hotel close to Hyde Park, so it’s no wonder this location is among the first ones we visit. Hyde Park is a huge green oasis in the heart of the city. It’s the biggest park in London and also the most visited one. Think of it as the Central Park of London!
Start your morning with a nice stroll through one of the prettiest locations in London. The park’s landscape is diverse and picturesque, with sprawling lawns, meandering pathways, and the calm waters of the Serpentine Lake. You can enjoy a variety of attractions and activities at the park, such as boating and wildlife watching. You’ll see lots of people jogging, cycling, picnicking, and horse riding. This location is a nice introduction to your day in London.
Throughout the year, Hyde Park hosts many events and festivals, including concerts, cultural celebrations, and seasonal fairs. Definitely check out if anything’s happening during your stay in London.

NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM
Continue your walk to the Natural History Museum. The Natural History Museum is a marvel of Victorian architecture and a vault of natural wonders. It’s definitely the most popular museum in London, and the best part is that it’s completely free. You can enter in 2 ways:
If you don’t know at what time you’ll be there, just arrive and stand in a queue. The queue moves quickly so you probably won’t have to wait longer than 20-30 minutes.

A few minutes away from the Westminster Abbey is the famous Big Ben, maybe London’s most popular landmark. This iconic landmark, officially known as the Elizabeth Tower, overlooks the river Thames and captivates every single visitor with its majestic presence.
While the name “Big Ben” originally referred to the tower’s largest bell, today it represents the entire structure. The tower has just recently been renovated, so you’ll catch it looking especially shiny and gorgeous.
If you’re wondering where you can get some of the best views of this gorgeous tower, here are two. Firstly, a gorgeous spot is just outside the Westminster Tube station. Exiting the station and seeing Big Ben will surely leave you speechless.
The second one is further away and perfect for taking photos. You need to cross the Westminster Bridge and find your way to the South Bank of the Thames. For a really special photo google the location “Bridge Arch Photo”!

Finish your evening with the visit to the London Eye, one of the most well-known Ferris wheels in the world. Standing tall on the South Bank of the River Thames, this iconic observation wheel offers some of the best views of London.
A ride on London Eye is an unforgettable experience, giving you breathtaking views of the famous landmarks such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and the Tower of London.
While it looks gorgeous during the day, I would recommend taking this stunning ride in the evening and seeing the sunset, as well as the sparkling lights of London later in the night.

The expansive indoor space features tropical gardens and several seating areas, so you can enjoy a peaceful retreat from the city, but still have incredible panoramic views. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer some of the best views of London’s most popular landmarks. Some of them being the Thames River, Tower Bridge, and the Shard.

Inside, there are masterpieces from several Renaissance masters like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo as well as Monet and Van Gogh.
The National Gallery is completely free, which is a big plus if you’re on a budget. You can enter freely, but for a more efficient visit you can book a time slot at the time of your arrival.

From the National Gallery continue to the British Museum, a cultural gem that will take you on a journey through human history and civilization. COVENT GARDEN
The perfect place to catch a break from walking through museums is Covent Garden. Covent Garden is a vibrant and eclectic neighborhood full of culture, creativity, and charm. It was once a fruit and vegetable market, but today it’s a popular hub of shops, restaurants, street performers, and theaters. Cobblestone streets of this neighborhood are lined with historic buildings, boutique stores, and inviting cafes.
The center point of this neighborhood is the iconic Covent Garden Market. This market hosts an abundance of vendors selling everything from artisanal crafts to culinary treats. You’ll definitely have lots to do here, whether you want to browse for unique souvenirs, sample delicious cuisine, or simply soak in the vibrant atmosphere.
Covent Garden is a memorable London experience and a perfect place to grab some lunch during the early afternoon. Some of the nicest restaurants you’ll find at the gorgeous Neal’s Yard. This is probably the most instagrammable part of Covent Garden, so make sure you snap some photos while grabbing a quick bite!

PICCADILLY CIRCUS
From Covent Garden continue to Piccadilly Circus, a lively and crowded junction in London’s West End. It’s an incredible location to witness during both day and night, because it the centre of entertainment, commerce, and culture in London.
At the center of this junction there’s the statue of Eros, a symbol of love and beauty, and it’s surrounded by towering buildings and neon displays. From Piccadilly Circus you can access world-class theaters and many loved restaurants, as well as designer boutiques and trendy bars.

Leave day 4 for a (half) day trip to one of these incredible destinations. These 3 locations are my personal favorite day trips from London, but if you don’t feel like leaving the city, you can find additional great things to do in the city.
KEW GARDENS
Kew Gardens is an incredible location perfect if you don’t want to go too far out of town. These gorgeous Royal botanic gardens are just outside of London and easily reachable by the Tube.

You should visit Kew Gardens if you love spending time in nature, enjoy serene lakes and gorgeous flowers, and are interested in Chinese architecture. At Kew, you can explore greenhouses, the Hive, and the Treetop Walkway.

HARRY POTTER STUDIOS
If you’re a Harry Potter fan, use this day to visit the Harry Potter Studios near London where all the movies were filmed. The studios showcase various sets, costumes, and props from all 8 movies, and the attention to detail is amazing.

You can easily reach the Harry Potter Studios by catching a train from London Euston to Watford Junction. A shuttle bus will be waiting for you there and take you directly to the studios. The ticket prices are quite steep but it’s absolutely worth it. If you choose to do this day trip, make sure you book tickets at least 3 months in advance, as they’re always sold out.

BATH
The third recommendation for a day trip is the gorgeous city of Bath. This city is one of the oldest in England and it’s also one of the most visited. It’s on the UNESCO world heritage list and it’s well known for its famous Roman baths. This is a great city to explore if you wish to leave the modern London for a day and immerse yourself in English history.
Some of the must-visit landmarks are the Pulteney Bridge, Roman baths, and Bath Abbey.
You can easily reach Bath by train in an hour and a half, and you can get tickets at Trainline or at the train station. Our train left from Paddington station, and it was quick and comfortable.
